Brean Golf Club: Scorrer only one to beat handicap

Mel Brown handed in a superb nett 64 to win by a massive 8 stroke margin on the day. He was the only player under par and left Tony McCann and Graham Exton battling it out for second spot after both posted nett 72’s.

McCann’s card showed the better back nine and he was awarded second place ahead of Exton.

Jon Scorrer was the leading player in the October Stableford and was the only player to beat his handicap on the day.

He scored 37 points to take top spot in Division Three and led home Chris Hubbard by 3 points. Mike Mullin was placed third on 33.

Next best on the day was Captain Elect Leighton Jenkins who won the First Division. His score of 35 was matched by Steve Eley but Jenkins edged it with the superior back nine score.

Simon Baunton was third on 33. Jamie Rano was the top man in the middle flight with 34 points being enough to claim victory but only after a four way countback with Steve Mason, Clive Goode and Phil Barry. Mason was placed second on the countback with Barry taking third leaving Goode back in fourth spot.

Craig Wheelaghan won the opening round of the Winter League on Sunday. On a glorious day scoring was little improved on the previous day with more players playing to or better than their handicaps.

Wheelaghan led the way with an impressive 39 points aided by an eagle two at the par four 8th. He was two clear of the runner up Simon Baunton who in turn held a single point advantage over the 3rd and 4th place finishers.

Both Murray Parsons and George Havercroft carded 36 points apiece and it was Havercroft who claimed the final slice of the prize money in 3rd with the better back nine of the duo.
