October 25, 2024 – 2Lt Lee Friesen, 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton Personnel Support Services
The 2024 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton Base Commander’s annual charitable golf tournament on Sept. 6 was a great day.
Full of fun in the sun and golf, it was an awesome chance to connect our military community with local businesses supporting the Edmonton Garrison Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC).
This year, the event raised more than $10,000, said tournament co‑ordinator Major Stephen MacKillop. The tournament greatly surpassed last year’s in scope and money raised, with donations coming from the 144 players, 10 community hole sponsors and other supporters.
The money raised will be used by the Edmonton MFRC to benefit our local soldiers, sailors, aviators and their families.
Registration began at 8:30 a.m. with special speeches by Colonel Robbin Dove, Commander 3 CDSB Edmonton, and Lieutenant‑Colonel Sandy Cooper. The tournament consisted of a four‑ball best‑ball/Texas scramble tournament. Players circulated the course and visited the various hole or game sponsors while playing through.
The sponsors supporting the tournament were a collection of unique local businesses and drink vendors, along with game sponsors offering longest drive and putting contests. In addition, there was a host of in‑kind prize offers. A local restaurant also made a generous pizza donation, which contestants ate on their way around the course. Finally, a Jeep was up for grabs to the player who could score a hole in one.
The day wrapped up with an amazing steak dinner catered by Edmonton Garrison’s own Kitchen. As players dined, prizes were awarded to our first, second and third place teams, with hand made trophies generously donated by 1 Service Battalion.
Judging by the smiles and laughter of our contestants, it was a successful tournament. Until next year!
