Improve your Golf SWING Speed | Achieving a Single Figure Handicap | Padraig Harrington

In this lesson of the series on helping every golfer achieve a single-figure handicap, I now move on to speed in your swing, which is important to maintain and ideally increase. Here, I discuss the importance of using a monitor to measure your swing speed and your progress over time, whilst I provide a number of techniques and practice routines to experiment with on the range.

  1. Great recommendation to do air swings and experiment with what you can do to move the club faster. Did this about a month or so ago and found a tempo and movement that went way faster. Took it to the range, turns out i could hit balls doing it. Now its my swing. Noticeable difference in distance on all clubs, especially driver.

  2. How do I break 175mph, Paddy?

Im hitting the centre of the face with 118-122, but its extemely rare I see 170. I am using range balls 99% of the i use the monitor, but even on the course, 118 just about goes 300-310. Playing in Ireland, so not sure if that make a difference considering the heat and other conditions on tour course

  3. Looking forward to each new episode.

I picked up the SuperSpeed Golf set last winter along with the PRGR monitor. Nice to say that I've been able to pick up some lost yardage across my entire bag. Getting older. I noticed my driver had fallen off to the low 220's. Swing speed was pretty abysmal. Back up to 245-50 with one or two each round in the 260's (yds). With the increase in swing speed, I'm striking the ball more solidly as well. Very pleased.

  4. Do you find the PRGR records slower swing speeds when you're swinging without the ball? I find I'm about 8mph slower for some reason.

  5. I think a golfer always has to learning more about swing technique…..and putting it into practice, Self-assessment is a key part of that…and many just don't think in a methodical analytical way. The finesse of chipping and putting….is really in the endgame, in my opinion…..after you've eliminated the vast majority of tee and fairway frustration.

  6. Paddy you are the best. I love this no nonsense practical approach. It has to be athletic too many of us are stuck looking at hitting positions. This is good stuff. Thank You.

  7. Thank you for this! My kids got me a launch monitor for Father's Day and I've been using it for my swing speed. So far my personal best is 106mph. I really appreciated hearing you say to experiment to see what makes your swing faster.

  8. When I was a kid, I used to swing it hard and fast and funnily enough the ball
Would go long and straight !! Then I ran into golf coaches who would say resist the hips on the way bk and clear the hips on the way thru. It would never work and I can only thank Paddy for confirming what I thought was true all along. We should all
Strive for Effortless Power rather than Powerful Effort !!
