Finally bought myself a set of clubs and the driver head flew off the first time using it.

I finally bought myself a set of clubs after years of playing with a set my father-in-law kindly let me use.

I've been saving up for a few months and have been keeping an eye on the Callaway Edge set in Costco. On Monday I noticed they were down from £600 to £480, so went along and picked up one of the last two remaining sets.

I'm playing a round with my father-in-law and two of mates tomorrow and thought I better test them out before hand to see how they feel.

I headed to the driving range last night and started with the PW and hit 10 balls. All shots felt good.

Moved up to the 8i and again, all felt good.

Next up was the 5 hybrid. I've never used a hybrid before, so really enjoyed trying it out. I was pretty consistent with distances and direction so was really happy with that.

Then I tried out the driver. I tee'd up the ball, took the swing and hit it. I heard loud bangs from above and then behind me. When I turned around I noticed the club head was lying in corridor behind me. The club head had flown of the shaft, hit the ceiling of the bay and then the wall. I couldn't believe what had just happened. Neither could the guy in the bay next to me! After all these years of using borrowed clubs and never once having an issue, the first time using a brand new driver, it falls apart.

I'm going to be returning them to Costco today, but have seen they have more of the same sets available online now. My wife doesn't think I should exchange them, and should continue to save my money for another set. I quite liked the feel of the other clubs in the set, and I know its probably just a faulty driver (maybe not enough glue), but I think she's right. I don't know if I could trust the driver again after that happening.

What would you do? Exchange for a new set, or save for something else?

Has anyone else had a similar issue with the Callaway Edge set? Just looking to see if this is a one-off.

  1. I had a callaway edge set and one of my clubs broke. Costco had me go through callaway for a replacement. They send you a new one and you send the old one in the same box.

Calloway’s customer service is great. Sorry you got a dud. The set is pretty damn good for the money

Looking at the shaft tip it looks like it wasn’t epoxied correctly. I’d say it’s a bit of a one off and Calloway will most likely replace it. Source: am club builder

That sucks OP. Callaway usually has great customer service, I’d be shocked if they didn’t replace this

  4. Sooperballz

That ball mark probably has something to do with it.

  5. GreenWaveGolfer12

Simple epoxy issue, same thing that happened to Rory McIlroy the other day. Pretty simple fix and it happens infrequently. I’d just exchange them, it’s extremely unlikely to happen again (and if it does it’s a very cheap and simple fix).

  6. Wide-Statistician548

The first club I replaced / upgraded from my edge set was the driver.

  7. There probably wasn’t enough epoxy and the epoxy they use for these clubs is a cheap, quick-cure epoxy. This is the bottom tier Callaway line and tbh I don’t think they’re manufactured in the same plant as their regular lines. It’s a symptom of cost saving, cheaper materials, quicker turnaround, and probably less quality control.

Luckily this problem is an easy fix. I build clubs so I could do this at home, you could too if you’re interested, wouldn’t be a huge undertaking even if you need to buy all the supplies. Also, this job is a cheap easy fix at pga superstore or the like.

Good luck, and don’t worry about!

  8. Now you know the edge of having your clubhead stay attached

  9. MangoHiChew2015

This happened to one of my irons and Callaway sent me a replacement Mavrik!

  10. craken502

Callaway will absolutely take care of this. I cracked a Rouge st driver, 100% my fault , they replaced it. The Rouge was on back order so the upgraded it to a paradyne driver

  11. the__party__man

After this tragedy passes…you should treat yourself to a new putter.

  12. scottylebot

The problem with these sets is they are simply inferior quality to their main line. It’s like brands putting stuff in outlet shops and tk maxx. Still decent value but not great.

  13. HeatFireAsh

I’m that’s rough, I have the same set and played 1 round and about 3 times to the driving range without an issue. Maybe see if Costco will replace them

  14. Glennture

I’ve had the same set for a year now, and mine are holding up well. The irons will last you a while. The driver and the putter were the clubs I replaced, but I dare say I like the old Edge driver better and went back to it yesterday for a round. Then I realized, it’s not the driver. It’s me who suck at golf.

  15. SharkInThisBay

My Callaway edge set has been sweet to me

Find a club repair shop and have it re-glued. Should not be that expensive. Hitting the ball on the hosel will sometimes do that. You can send it to Callaway but a local place can fix it in about 15 minutes.

  17. FeableZerg

I bought this set of clubs a couple of years ago. Great starter golf set. I still use my irons and putter. I plan on replacing them in the future after I get better.

The drivers and the hybrids are made of cheap material and they all broke after two to three years. My hybrid the face of the club just broke apart. That being said my swing hit the ground a lot more back then so they took more abuse.

  18. Velkro615

Hit up Callaway first, they may actually send you a better model. I started on the Edge set with no issues and I’ve seen $600 drivers fail. It happens.

  19. Fickle_Annual9359

I have the previous generation of callaway Edge from costco and haven’t had a problem in 2 years. The only broken club was from me not realizing my follow through was going through a low hanging tree branch RIP 3w

  20. asacschrader09

Same thing happened with a second hand TM sim 2 driver I bought recently. One practice swing and the head came clean off. One shaft replacement later and I’ve been hitting bombs/slices ever since.

  21. Shart_Finger

A good eh steering wheel that doesn’t fly off while you’re driving

  22. Accomplished-Pain538

Agree with people saying go thru callaway. There have been stories of people getting upgraded when going that route. Ymmv

  23. wrenched85

I bought this set earlier this year and have been gaming them and I’ve been playing with them very frequently. They’re great for me, who is just over a year into playing. Except for the driver, which I can’t seem to fall in love with. Long story short, thank you for your post as it’s likely motivated me to order a new driver.

I have a round in an hour, maybe the Edge driver will sense my interest in a new big stick and perform for me today. It has to be the club right?

  24. KillCreatures

Ive had this set for a few months and no issues so far, I think your issue is the exception. I enjoy the clubs but I also dont shoot under 100.

  25. pepelechan

Same exact thing happened to me after my wife purchased same set from Costco, Callaway customer service was easy to deal with. Sent a big Bertha as a replacement and sent my broken driver and shaft without much more than basic information back to callaway.

  26. I have this set and haven’t had any issues in my first two years. Seems like you got a good deal (on what’s already a good deal). I’d exchange it.

  27. Informal_Kale277

Epoxy failure is unlikely, but could happen to any club really. My buddy has a set of these and his dream is what happened to you, because apparently Callaway will sometimes send one of their more expensive drivers as a replacement haha.

I would just reach out to Callaway.

  28. mphfrom77

Few years back I purchased the Costco Callaway set. It came with two 3-Woods…and no driver (the rest of the clubs were correct). I called Callaway and explained the situation. They sent me out an upgraded driver (because they didn’t have the Costco driver in stock)…and in the same box I sent them back one of those 3-Woods (they paid for shipping). It was a pleasant experience not having to go back to Costco.

Since then I’ve actually upgraded all my clubs. Purchased a Driver and 5-wood from Callaway pre-owned (using the guy here on Reddit that works for them and does AMA’s). Again… pleasant experience.

  29. JProhaska3

As someone who bought this set to start learning (and abusing), my driver has seen some not so nice swings and shows no damage. I’d assume yours was defective

  30. FloridaIsTooDamnHot

Definitely a dud – I have the same set and have started from basically zero skill on them and not had the same thing. I’ve got two heel dents even from “learning” lol!

  31. heartbrooksbrain

Call em up, they replaced my broken Strata driver with a brand new Big Bertha 2023 a few months ago.

  32. AyatollahSneed

I had this happen to my Edge driver, which I bought from Costco two weeks ago. Rather than returning it to Costco, I contacted Callaway, and they sent me a new Big Bertha. It seems like these drivers are problematic, but Callaway support is fantastic.

  33. Ecstatic_Knowledge96

Same thing happened to me. Send it back to Callaway you lazy bastard! lol

  34. drewc717

Get some 3M windshield adhesive and call it good if the replacement process gives you any fits.

  35. stayguide

Great photo staging, almost professional lol. Return to Costco for a refund l, then purchase another.

  36. Haveadaddyamadaddy

Send it into Callaway. Same thing happened on my first swing with a Callaway driver. They fixed it and haven’t had an issue since.

  37. JeebusChristBalls

This can happen on those old hand me down clubs you find in your dads garage. The epoxy gets weak from age and temperature change over the years. You take them out to the course, hit a drive, and the head goes flying. Seen it happen before when I first started playing.

  38. marvinfuture

So you could go with a replacement as this should be covered, however it looks like it just flew out of the shaft due to poor adhesion. You may be able to just reapply epoxy and put it back together. Wouldn’t blame you to just replace them though

  39. AccomplishedGeneral9

Did it “fly off” when hitting the ball in the center of the face during normal play? Or did it “fly off” when you hit something that made that massive mark on the heal of the club.

Either way, Callaway will likely replace it no questions asked.

Personally I would go buy a used club that is of higher quality than the edge line. Go to your local golf shop and see what they have in the used bargain barrel. Nice deals this time of year.
