Let me just say what helped me. And some of this may be taboo in the disc golf world but that's ok cuz everyone approaches things from different angles. I think that majority of people who have ever played disc golf at some point in time before they ever heard of disc golf threw a regular Frisbee at some point. with a regular Frisbee, you get a pretty straight flight until near the end of its travel where it has a very predictable tail off to one side depending on hand orientation. With that said, I think the best discs for beginners are discs that fly predictably straight and behave as close to a Frisbee as possible. some discs that really helped me in the beginning were the mvp glitch for a putter and the watt for throwing a tad longer, a discraft buzz or dynamic truth for a midrange, a innova hawkeye or teebird for a fairway driver, and lastly a lower speed distance driver like a innova beast or wraith (depending on arm speed. most beginners will have trouble getting higher speed discs to perform correctly, I know I did and I still stick to lower speed discs. As a beginner, I wouldn't necessarily worry about discs that have all kinds unique characteristics. Just stick to discs that throw as straight as possible and learn how to alter the disc path with the angle in which you release it. These are my own opinions and what has helped me in my journey and with learning those basic fundamentals on straight flying discs, I am now able to pick up more unstable discs and coax a line out of them that benefits my shot.
I like to keep it OG with my Gateway Wizard, Discraft Buzzz, Millinnium JLS, & Innova Beast. Maybe a Tee-Bird if I need to have 5. Adjust throwing angle to suit. Done.
