During the third round of the 2024 TOUR Championship, Sahith Theegala felt that he unintentionally moved the sand in his back swing during his second shot from the bunker on No. 3 at East Lake Golf Club. After the shot he called a rules official to explain the situation and self-imposed a penalty on himself. He was later accessed a two-stroke penalty.

The final leg of the three-event FedExCup Playoffs series arrives as a restored East Lake Golf Club hosts the TOUR Championship. A field of 30 players battles it out in this no-cut finale for the biggest prize on TOUR. Scottie Scheffler once again heads to East Lake ranked No. 1 in the FedExCup Standings after a fabulous 2024 campaign that includes six TOUR victories and a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. This is the third straight year Scheffler enters the season finale ranked No. 1, and he’ll start two shots ahead of the pack heading into the first round. Xander Schauffele has also had a great season, claiming two major titles. The American finished T2 and T5 in recent years at East Lake and sits two shots back of Scheffler. Hideki Matsuyama also eyes his chances in Georgia this week. He won the first Playoffs event at the FedEx St. Jude Championship but withdrew from the BMW Championship last week due to a back injury. He claimed the bronze medal at the Olympics, as well as victory at The Genesis Invitational earlier this year. Others to look out for are Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland.

Sahith might have done the right thing. But hitting a grain of sand in the backswing is totally possible given that the rake can introduce ridges into which a ball can (will mostly) settle and so the sand surrounding will be higher. Golf has a lot of quirks. Changing the lie before the swing is clearly wrong, but during the swing would be very common for amateurs.
Was Patrick Reed ever penalized for his obvious trench digging?? Because if not … this absolutely should not be a penalty
IDK man seems like the pressure got to him. It is what it is, Thee definitely had his chances to fight Scottie for that win. Scottie is a birdie machine right now.
Theegala is just a man of integrity and that is what it’s all about.
Well done Sahith, integrity is very important, Patrick Reed has none.
I’ve watched him for some time, very good golfer, top notch but with this move he has gained much more respect as a person! 👍
Deep respect for this man!!! This is how golf was and will be.
Integrity!!! Such a classy young man.
Anybody who would rather respect the integrity of the game and lose $5M is an awesome person. I’m a fan of this guy.
Just became an instant fan of Theegala. Calling on yourself is hard, we have all been there.
Golf is a game of integrity. This is the right way of gaining notoriety.
It’s a silly rule. Unless there is intent to improve the lie there should not be a penalty
if only the 4 man scrambles had this integrity lol
RESPECT Sahith!
The game of golf have the dumbest rules in all sport. It shouldn’t even have to come to a player calling a foul on himself
Another antiquated PGA rule that should be reconsidered. BS this guy had to take 2 shot! penalty. Nuts.
Love golf. You call penalties on yourself.
Patrick Reed….this is what honor looks like….Theegala just made Snead, Hogan, Nelson and Palmer very proud
Two shots seems kinda harsh for this type of sand infraction. I guess in tournaments without cameras everywhere, moving sand when folks aren’t looking is a thing
He is a fine player, will find his time & moment at the PGA Tour
Patrick reed could never
Well played much respect
This should be mandatory viewing in every classroom.
