Putter Lie Angle and Improving Your Putting

The lie angle of your putter can influence your stroke for the good and bad. If you understand the what and why you can ensure to make more putts more often. Here’s how…

If you adhere to the theory the putters shaft needs to be in the same plane as the forearms, then you have to have a general understanding of human anatomy and the carrying angle of the forearms. The carrying angle is the angle formed between the forearm and upper arm when the golfer is standing vertical, arms hanging down and palms rotated to face forwards. When doing this you will notice the shoulder to the elbow hangs close to vertically. But, the elbow to the wrist has an angle – the carrying angle. Most men will habe a carrying angle in the 74-78 degree range and women will be in the 70-74 degree range. If you are to have the putters shaft in the r same plane as the forearms then the lie angle of the putter needs to match the carrying angle of the individual.

If you don’t follow that theory and prefer to play a putter at the ‘standard’ 70-71 degree lie angle then you’re going to have to adjust to ensure the stroke isn’t negatively influenced by vertical torque. Vertical torque is when the center of gravity of the putter head tries to align itself directly under the butt end of the grip. This can be an issue for people who like to hold their putter ‘as if holding a small bird’ because the putter’s head will default to falling too far to the inside and negatively effecting the stroke.

To offset this you will need to hold the grip more firmly in the lead, or target side hand. If your ‘normal’ grip pressure is a 3-4 (on a scale of 1-10) be sure to increase that pressure to 6-7, possibly even 8. This will allow the putter heads to track on the path you intended, have a more solid strike and make more putts.

What is The Golf Paradigm (Pair-a-dime)?
The Golf Paradigm is a theory that encompasses a Whole-In-One approach to improvement. It begins with the overall paradigm; i.e. the game of golf. Followed by two parts that are always to remain in balance; i.e. the golf yin/yang – ‘improving’ and ‘enjoyment’. Helping to maintain that balance are the 5 elements of the game; the swing, club fitting, health/fitness, mental, and integration. Knowing which area to focus on and how the other areas supplement that helps to form the golfers ‘recipe’ for improvement. As the golfer improves their recipe, or what is focused on, changes and this is what allows them to reach levels of play they never thought possible. It’s not magical, but it’s close.
