Joel I want to run some numbers by you here Davis Thompson wins the John Deere classic at 28 under Scotty Sheffer won The Travelers 22 under Cam Davis was lagging by comparison he won in Detroit the rocket mortgage at 18 under two of those three weeks also saw 59 shot on the PGA tour a does the 59 carry the weight that it used to carry as a symbol of excellence in this game and B do the fans deserve something better or more interesting than just that 20 5 under birdie shootout every week well on the first point I don’t think the 59 carries the same weight I think there have been what 14 sub 60 rounds in PJ tour history and eight of those have happened in the past eight years that’s not counting Bryson’s 58 in West Virginia year ago um you know looking at this past week Deer Run that was a course designed specifically for tour players not that long ago and it’s already hilariously outdated and if you’re looking for why I think Jordan Speed partially gave us the answer earlier in the week when he talked about it’s not just the ball’s going far it’s that you can have the Miss hit that goes just as far uh as a as a hit right on the on the on the center um clearly distance is an issue but I think the same senent goes for irons and even even to an extent the wedges as well we rarely see anything more than eight iron in these guys hands on the approach the three through six irons have become borderline extinct uh I think there’s also something you said for how the coures have been set up the tour doesn’t want to upset its membership um and I think they acques to presenting a test that’s more scorable than than demanding really only the memorial gets away with presenting a tough test on an annual basis and even then you know you still hear players Grumble about what Jack puts them through so uh to answer your second point I think it’s a shame because I think this is unintentionally hurting the tour product I think the easier the conditions are the harder it is to decipher a good performance from a great performance I think if the tour wants to have its best players in the mix more uh or to just identify the best golfers on a more routine basis I think the tougher setups are the answer to it Taylor what do you think though don’t we just just tip our cap to the to the greatness of the players this is the third time there have been multiple sub 60 rounds in the same season 2010 it was Paul gois and Stewart Alby 2017 it was Justin Thomas and nine days later was Adam hadin now we have Springer and young how much it just kind of players dragging off each other all out the Roger banister breaking the 4minute mile I think there’s some of that and I was reading the the bottom line on Golf Channel today that the fourth ever 59 was 14 years ago today by what you just referenced Paul Goos we’ve had 10 of them amen or Damon rather in the last 14 years so we’ve had a bunch of them that have all been happening and obviously we’ve had a couple in the last few weeks with Springer doing it this past weekend and Cameron young doing it the weekend before now I will say if it’s ball in hand and or it’s dry or it’s wet soft conditions I don’t know that I would put an ass risk next to it but it certainly isn’t as challenging to do it as it is say in tougher conditions where you are not having the ball in your hand and it’s dry firm and fast but nevertheless I don’t M none of this bothers me uh we should be all for bringing more of the Casual fans into the game and if they want to see a bunch of birdies happen each and every week then so be it you know ideally the purists that are on this screen right now may want to see less birdies Mr Doom and Gloom aan Lynch who’s going to I want them all to play like me Taylor Who’s going to his Doom and Gloom Paradise next week to Europe where the Sun never shines you know look that’s fine but uh I I think that we need to capture the Casual fan as much as we can and if that means we have to see a bunch of birdies and see 25 under win quote unquote regular PGA Tour events so be it well nothing seems to attract fans like the ryer cup the United States expected to announce its Captain tomorrow will carry it live on Golf Channel Joel what would you like to see a captain that kind of has been in the club as it were been an assistant captain or do you want to see the United States kind of think outside the box and bring in an unexpected voice yeah certainly the lad I think the task force from 10 years ago has become the very thing it was trying to combat and it was abundantly clear that the US needs a wakeup call after that drubbing in Rome I know there’s no game plan or or guar a game plan that guarantees success but if you’re selling that this us team will be different to fans I think you need to have an avatar for the emotions that they have for the Ryder Cup that optically at least the American players have lacked um so I think the same in that same breath the PJ of America they’re aware of the criticism that you just touched upon that it’s become a goto Boys Club I mean a great way to combat that stigma is to bring in someone from from the outside who doesn’t know the secret password to the club it will be interesting to see the pick tomorrow I if you’re talking outside the I’m pulling for Michael block I think that’d really be than that see who the call is Taylor are you on the same page as Joel here that there is a need to kind of break up this at least the perception of of a boys club where they’ve been crowdsourcing the captaincy over the last decade yeah I think there needs to be more creativity with this pick like look if Tiger Woods accepts the position then that’s one thing I he absolutely deserves to have the first crack at this and if he doesn’t want to do it then I do think they need to be rather creative with who this selection is which we will all find out tomorrow I’m of the opinion that they would they should go that route that that would be a better choice even than Tiger Woods for this rer cup and I think tiger probably agrees with that I think the tiger would prefer to be the Ridder Cup captain in a d Manor upcoming in three years where there’s not as much of the spotlight some more of a remote location and he doesn’t have to worry about all the publicity that comes with New York in that market and if that’s the case then yes be creative with the selection and I think Joel said it perfectly there with having an outside the box uh sort of selection I think that if that’s the case then all 12 of the people that are playing on the team are I I don’t want to say walking on eggshells but they have the C they they realize they’re not the captain and that they can’t influence the captain and that the person that’s calling the shots will be respected and I just don’t know that there was enough of that uh I look going in into it I thought Zack Johnson would do a great job in Italy it didn’t work out and maybe some of those relationships that he had going into it were part of the reason why but I U I would fully support the PGA of America if they were creative with this pick can’t wait to see what turns out to be the official call tomorrow since we’re in Scottish season guys quick last question for you what is the most fun golf course in Scotland Taylor oh ah man what a good question I’m going to go north barer that’s the most fun course I’ve played over there there’s some like mirfield or the old course that may get Garner some more attention but North Barrack’s the most fun golf course I’ve played over in Scotland Jo for me my my heart’s at brora it’s if you’re going to make the trip to dorick it’s a little spot that has just a lot of charm uh very open even even for you Aon um it’s just a lot of fun I think it really kind of gets back to the spirit and soul of the game and um yeah it’s just a lot of good fun the correct answer actually is crude and Bay I’m surprised neither of you brought it up it’s very funky and quirky but it just it’s the essence in my opinion of lynx golf Aman you can’t you yeah I’ll take you there I know some people at crud Bay Amon what’s your call it’s got I’m with Taylor on this one I’d play the last six holes at North bar in a loop for the rest of my life and never be bored they just need to kind of widen those Fairways a little bit no doubt

  1. Courses are far too easy. The courses don’t test the ability of the professionals. They need tightened up like the Open courses so the best players rise to the top.

  2. yeah make it harder, seems like every course now has a super easy par 5 that every player eagles or def birdies, and a par 4 that is driveable almost… so usga wants to slow scoring down by rolling back ball, and pga makes scoring easy?? lol its way more fun to watch them grind and struggle for par.

  3. Driver wedge is tedious. A good tournament is where the winner is in single digits under.

  4. Don't like the birdie fests….I tried watching the final round of JD, but it couldn't keep my interest…yeh, these guys are good, so set the courses up to make them make shots!

  5. All true. +4 is the old scratch. 68 is the old 72. Tech is making too many players similar. Soft courses, no wind…. you need more pinehursts.

  6. You are witnessing the results of technological improvements in all facets of the game. Without change expect the scoring trends to continue.

  7. Guess I’m the only one that likes it. I think people just hate seeing the pros knock down low 60’s. A lot of these courses have come down to putting. The length is kind of irrelevant. Look at Rory’s record…. I like to see crazy shots and low scores. Pinehurst was as painful to watch as it is to play lol

  8. People need to stop complaining. Talk of rolling the ball or clubs back does nothing but play into longer players advantage even more. Like all sports, the game has just progressed. Do what you want, it’s still not going to play like it did in years past.

  9. Narrow the fairways. Grow the rough. Slow the fairways. I would much rather watch guys shoot 68-70 each round than 62 and 63's. But the people at the tournament wants long drives and birdies.

  10. Maybe the PGA should let the USGA prep its courses. I was raised to believe that winning scores should be around even par.

  11. It's amazing how good these guys are. I realize technology has changed the game but you still have to make putts.

  12. Technology is better, Players are better and stronger mentally. It is what it is… just make par 5s 600 yards and throw in a few 500 yard par 4s

  13. Roll the game back 20 years. 28 under is gross. Make it tough again. This driver, wedge game is unsustainable.

  14. The LA Open at Riviera is always a tough test, and yes, Jack's place…and you have the Majors. Pebble, depends on the weather, but it's a tough test. Otherwise, it's a boring birdie fest because it's not always the same guy going that low…it's just the hot guy. Meaning it's not that special. Scottie is special though; I just want the courses to be set up way more firmer on the greens, and more punishing off the fairways etc..

  15. When you know the leader isn't going to shoot over par over that last few holes, a big chunk of the drama is lost. Quad Cities was over on the 14th green and pretty well done a couple of holes before that. If there are finishing holes where a guy can make a double or triple bogey, the game ain't over 'til it's over.

  16. Absolutely yes, ruining the game. I have little interest when -28 wins. More fun when -12 wins, winner has a double bogey on the way. Courses set up too easy. Players should be penalised if miss fairways and greens as the distance the ball flies makes many courses redundant.

  17. Analytics are helping the players find their weak spots with shot link and decisive aggressive vs conservative holes, shots, and lies are playing into lower scores and more birdies nowadays and no one is mentioning that aspect.

  18. High level professional and amateur tournaments need to limit the forgiveness of the golf clubs. Club manufacturers can put out high level clubs and casual golf clubs

  19. I definitely prefer tournaments where the leaders are around par, the pros are immensely gifted but it's silly when they're shooting automatic 63s and lower every round.

  20. Look at the us open this year, it was the best tournament that I can remember and the leader board was loaded with top players

  21. My thoughts are we need more British Open type courses, pot bunkers, deeper roughs, maybe even smaller greens.
