[Music] welcome into our Open Championship preview it goes by quickly Sheffer shafley dambo who will it be at Royal trun where does it sit in the Open Championship Roa among the guys and also thoughts on the three that have already won major championships and can Rory rebound that and a ton more with Brendan young Johnson Wagner Taylor Zer and myself our Open championship preview starts [Music] now in this Split Second your hands make all the difference it was time for a grip to help them own the moment introducing reverse taper technology to stabilize both hands for a more Square putter face at impact the most important Split Second and golf reverse taper only from Golf Pride respect the grip and with that here we are boys one more time around the block for a major championship but before we get to the open both of you guys have played in it um we’ve got to review what happened at Piner because I mean it’s it’s what you hope for but part of what we hope for is not heartbreak and we had that we’ll get to him let me start with you the the impression the image the moment that will stand with you as a place who loves the place forever what will it be Johnson hold US Open trophy for sure I knew it yeah Johnson won the US Open just as much as Bryson did and just as much as pineur did um but no it I thought that listen all of us love that that place we all live in North Carolina that place is special to us I thought that Pinehurst crushed it and each year we sort of evaluate whether or not u a place is you know deserving of hosting a major championship not not only are they deserving they deserve to be the first in the road and I thought it was just terrific I thought the USGA did a great job with its setup you’re going to have people upset with how fast those greens can get on Saturday and Sunday but overall I think that it was an awesome competition and it gave us like you said it gave us everything that we wanted we didn’t necessarily get that in 2014 with a runaway win with Martin kimer Pinehurst um they deserved it they they were owed one in my opinion and um I just thought it was a fantastic week all right we’ll get to America’s darling here in a second but in an under itated way how about this man pinch hitting and now becoming a full-time gas bag he he is a full-time gas bag now he was awesome uh there was a point during Saturday’s broadcast where he stopped looking at me and he just knew it’s my time to jump in which made me very happy Brendan D young crushed it as the US Open radio analyst he he did so what will you remember about you know being there and being immersed in a production that was different from things that you’ve done on the TV side what will stand up from ERS for you honestly well for one the culture that these guys have is awesome it it it’s it’s awesome it was so much fun to to step in and be so welcomed right from the start um yeah but to Echo what Taylor said I think piner’s absolutely crushed that they got it spot on from the start and the USGA you know this is an organization that’s come under some scrutiny rightly so at times I think they got everything spot on as well there were plenty of opportunities for them to screw things up they didn’t at all um I think they were great and uh you know what deserve all the credit they get all right um your moment on Sunday night was rarely do things happen that you go oh my God that that’s like the lunar eclipse of live television live is always better it always will be better but even in that you don’t get moments like that so beyond you doing what you did with the guy who won the golf tournament what will you remember most it’s been so cool getting to do what I’ve I’ve been been able to do at major championships at Valhalla I’m out there every night as the maintenance crew is preparing the golf course for the tournament the next day and I got to meet all the the superintendent and I’m watching them prepare the greens and uh hand raking all the bunkers every single night on whatever hole I’m on and uh at the end of that week they gave me a Valhalla maintenance cap for the PGA which was cool I felt pretty good about that and then it was the same at Pinehurst I’m out there every night on a certain green watching them prepare they watered the heck out of those greens and aprons every single night if the USGA wanted to that Golf Course could have gone completely gotten completely out of hand uh for me it’s just those behind the scenes moments that I that I had I got to interview Jeff Hall from the USGA who’s in charge of setting up the golf course I interviewed him twice um they had their green speeds on Tuesday Wednesday in the 15 range and they slowed them down for the tournament and just uh all the little things that I I got to take part in were incredible and I thought Bryson I know we’re going to get to him but I I was I’ve always been sort of a hater of him I thought he was a selfish guy and I’m not 100% sold right now but standing out in the 18th Fairway for about two hours getting ready to do what I was doing after the tournament I watched him come out onto the 18th green take a picture with every single person that wanted it sign everything that was possible letting anybody that wanted to touch the trophy including me I just I think I I’m going to choose to believe right now that he’s changed and and he’s getting it more now than he ever has look what you said with him on live television I think we all appreciated that you were Hest said hey man I I I was not vibing on you at all so so with respect to the thing that I’ll remember it’s not that there are two ships passing in the night but never in my wildest dreams that I think that brys and D Shambo would be a people’s champion and Rory mroy because of the way things transpired would be leaving the property and be getting ridiculed criticized and harpooned for leaving the property I I don’t think that Rory is going to go into a place where people are going to you know be against him but the ascendancy of Bryson D Shambo publicly and the refinement of his game at a place where we all we didn’t out and out dismiss him but we were like I don’t know if this is going to be the place for him off of Valhalla and he showed the Ingenuity to do what he did and then Rory leaving and you’re going my God maybe that devast this Devastation is something you can’t get past that to me is what I’ll remember those two guys in that moment going oh my God this guy’s got the trophy we thought this guy was going to get it he leaves laying rubber in the parking lot and the other guy is getting engulfed by fans like he’s Francis we met yeah that that is what I’ll remember and we we had the chance to to do an interview together and we walked from the locker room under the under the clubhouse out uh up the stairwell and and outside and he stopped and just observed all the people that were cheering for him he truly appreciates the connection he’s made especially with younger people in the game and he is a showman he’ll be the first to tell you that he feels like a part of his responsibility is to be an Entertainer he thrives off of this YouTube audience that that he has created there aren’t many things about Liv that I’ve enjoyed and I think I speak for most people but I do think that Liv has helped Bryson to Shambo he’s never really been on the team he’s been the ultimate individual guy throughout most of his life he didn’t have a lot of friends back home in California he was sort of a you talk to some of his former teammates at SMU he sort of was kind of in his own lane when he was there but to the credit of anban leiri Charles Howell paey and Paul Casey they have um they have kind of big brothered him in a way that I think in large part is created what Johnson has said a a change in personality and he’s learned how to kind of get get along with people and not be so intense all of the time I think he is dying to be loved and I think we’re seeing that right now in 20124 does he have a little Mickelson in him like you’re not really sure and I always said about Phil like I don’t know what the motivation is to do hours of of autographs kids don’t care they just want the autographs adults are cynical they’ll say he’s got ulterior motives I I I think Bryson’s got a little bit of that um again it doesn’t matter to the overwhelming majority of those people one thing I I learned I was Landing from Studio from morial Monday and Charlotte to head over to Pinehurst there was a bunch of Liv caddies I think you and I I shared the story with you there was a bunch of Liv caddies coming from Houston Landing in Charlotte we’re at the same baggage claim and ran into wean who cat’s for Martin kimer and lordy who cat’s for Henrik Stinson and we were just shooting the bull hadn’t seen those guys in a while and uh they asked what I was doing and I said well I’m doing walk and talks early in the week and I have have Bryson signed up to do it I’m a little nervous and uh they said dude you wouldn’t believe how much this guy’s changed in the last 6 eight months so I think I hear what you’re saying about Phil I’m choosing right now to to believe it until I’m proven otherwise because we’re we’re boys now me and Bryson way back you really are you actually shared that anecdote with him you said that to his face uh which again I think we all appreciate the Rory damage the the the scar tissue that is associated with this sport um he’s building some up this is as much as any if not more so would you agree oh yeah 100 times more but the deepest cut oh 100% if this wasn’t Rory maroy who is obviously Uber Uber talented I would be ready to write him off and say there’s no chance he’s going to win another major I still think Rory’s good this episode would wreck many many many I Rory’s still good enough where he’s going to win a major he’s still going to keep putting himself in position to win one one’s going to fall in his lap at some point but this one’s going to take a little while to get over I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him show up in a couple weeks time and really really struggle okay uh deepest cut for for you much more so than the open in 22 open last year he birdies 13 and takes a two shot lead and then ultimately starts missing every single shot to the left after that great up and down on 14 great bogey on 15 and then finally like 16 okay he’s settled in and then misses that short Putt and then up and down on 17 even 18 from where he was to get that second shot to where he was and hit the pitch he did like I I know those short putts look really bad but yeah this this one stings it’s yeah the the putt on 16 especially I think is the one that stings to Johnson’s point the up and down on 17 won’t get talked about because of what happened on 16 and 18 and you’re right the recovery shot on 18 was a great recovery shot short of the there to give yourself a chance but um while everyone else was celebrating the Bryson Victory I went behind the hole three feet behind the hole and looked at that putt I mean that that putt breaks about as as much as it is long you know it it really does it breaks more than a foot it’s well outside the hole and if you’re just going to get it started now if you’re going to ram it in the back then then obviously it doesn’t break as much but if you miss it you’re down at the front of the green I me that’s a hard putty had on 18 but wouldn’t you have rather seen him like the next one doesn’t matter and I felt like I felt like the entire back nine he kept looking back over his shoulder and was more concerned about what Bryson was doing I mean and at risk of beating a dead horse if he doesn’t hit it over the back of the 15th green yeah none of this happens would you want someone in your ear to remind you of what you just said Johnson in a moment like that would you want a caddy in your ear to say knock this in the back of the hole yes 100% 100% 100% And I mean I you know I’ve been I I feel like we’ve beaten this storyline both of you guys have but Harry diamond is good of a friend good player I’m sure he’s got his moments of being a great caddy but it’s in the finest of details when you you don’t you don’t have the feeling and the mental wherewithal that you normally do that you need that calming voice like a Steve Williams or a Ted Scott that can bring you back down and say hey I know you’re concerned about what he’s doing back there let’s focus on what we’re doing up here somebody that’s been in your corner that’s done it somebody Steve Williams has got however many majors Ted Ted Scott now has however many majors Harry Diamond’s got zero he doesn’t have the I don’t know what the the right word is he doesn’t have the he hasn’t been there enough to do it yeah I um look I don’t think this is an unreasonable conversation to have um I I I heard you and immediately after this it might have been the next day and I thought you did as practical and as sensible a job of explaining that it’s not in criticism of Harry Diamond it’s just an assessment of the job and the personality of the person that you are catting for and it’s not calling him off of stuff A lot of times it could be reinforcement of what it is that you think he’s trying to do um I will say that coming down the stretch the entire weekend he did not hit a drive left until 14 which was like I didn’t go oh God but I was like God where did that come from to a degree and then the decision to hit the lighted shot that he hit on 15 was kind of heads scratching and yes it was a decent four it was from where it ended up no question it was and I actually thought his part P it’s like God this could really this could he could have five feet for four the second shot on 16 was fine yeah it was fine why you shorts side yourself on 17 Again like that’s not that’s not the Miss it’s not and then on 18 just put it in the Fairway if you hit three-wood you you’re have 125 as opposed to 995 I don’t know I just thought there was a combination of things that you could you could say Harry what were you doing um and Rory what were you doing but you’re right that the put on 16 was a jolt to everybody starting with him he got the break because Bryson three putted 15 I I I do have to say that that that putt on 16 I I was fortunate to play the next day and I looked at that putt one of the guys in my group had that putt right past that hole the grain went toward toley I’m hoping CER Miss Matt which one the honky Tong it was CER that missed it but right past that right past that hole it goes It goes away but just where he was putting from the grain went towards the front of the green and it was strong the same cup you could see how worn out the edge of that cup was pulling Rory’s putt to the left I know it’s 2 feet you just got 2 and half fet come on man it’s a straight putt but it you look at that putt if you’re if you’re not concentrating you look at that Putt and think that it’s going to break right and you play it inside left and pull it a hair that grain’s taken it I mean it was a missable putt yeah and look I know that sometimes people say Taylor you don’t have to qualify your remarks I don’t like being malicious and I think Harry diamond is is somebody that I’ve really enjoyed being around the last few years I’ve walked with Rory a lot in practice rounds and it turns out where I’m basically walking with Harry and he is a delightful person you can see why Harry and Rory are such great friends they grew up playing together Harry knows everything thing about Rory’s game and to have somebody that loves you as much as Harry does next to you is is a wonderful thing to have on the golf course but I do think that Rory needs a little bit of a push just a reinforcement from time to time that you are Rory freaking maory and you don’t need to be worrying about the doubt and what are all the other consequences of somebody else’s play a lot of people have said this I’ll never forget doing a sit down interview one time with Dustin Johnson and asked him when everyone is playing their best who’s the best and I thought he might say himself this is six seven years ago he said Rory mroy you know and if you are in that position to be that talented you do if you need somebody I think to be able to give you a little bit more reinforcement be a little aggressive in those moments and I just wonder if Harry’s ever willing to do it you know that this will only do one thing reinforce that he will not take Harry off the bag I mean he is you know look he’s a righteous dude and I’m talking about the boss um he’s going to be there obviously at TR uh we will get to him toward the latter part of this last thing before we get to trun specifically sheffler pass it off pause what what are you on his week he won the tournament before the he won the tournament before the US Open and the tournament after the US Open so the Scotty series was good for him this year I just think he was simply uncomfortable with the greens Johnson I think that he could never get comfortable with how fast those greens were I mean I think the Way Memorial played especially on the weekend I think it beat him up I think he was exhausted I mean he shot two overp par and one and then he shows up and has never seen Pinehurst before and I think not taking a a prep trip I know Xander did I know a bunch of guys did that hadn’t seen it before but I mean he’s had a lot going on and and I’m I’m riding this one off there was too many other outside influencers I agree he didn’t get used to the greens it’s because he only played nine holes on each side he walked him the one other time but like you can’t play Piner number two with that little preparation yeah I’m ready to pass that one off he hit the ball good good enough to win the golf tournament I think he was in the top five bull striking wise putted absolutely awful I think he was at the bottom of the putting stats but yeah I’m ready to write that he drove it horribly the first two days I walked with him he he was missing Fairways with irons he missed a third Fairway left on day one he kind of hit it short and kind of clunky off the first T missed it right on two missed it left on three missed it right on four missed it left on five um I I thought it was not just the greens I thought he was a little kind of his equilibrium was off like we missed the Fairway and I may get a good lie like he didn’t accept what that was what the natives were and I think part of that was because he was in them from the from the get-go so he never found his footing um and and I will say this about Rory like I think Rory I thought he looked fatigued playing with Scotty at the Masters those first couple days here I thought he flipped the script on him he was better he had a more complete Arsenal and I think that once he gets past the damage of this and we don’t know when that’s going to be that that will be reinforcing like hey man I had something for you two majors later yeah I hope that he he’s able to hope so to consume that because that was a big take takeaway before how the event ended but I’m with Brendan I I think this is the deepest cut of all okay all right so we get to trun you played in the open 12 and 13 you played it in 14 so as far as TR you didn’t play in competition in 16 just let’s give some thoughts on on this venue which has amazing history going back to 1923 and a and a great list of Champions and interesting list of Champions what are your thoughts on trun yeah I mean since 1950 it’s been all Americans that have won at trun before Henrik Stinson so I think uh I I don’t know why that is I don’t know enough about the golf course I’ve definitely watched the previous opens that I I can remember and I remember watching Todd Hamilton play it around with that sonar Tech hybrid and just get it up and down from everywhere the Justin Leonard 97 vivid memory I thought he was going to go back to back and win the PGA when when Davis won Wingfoot but I mean for me trun what stands out is just like a couple different holes it seems a little nondescript to me like not a lot of memorable golf holes yeah I would agree with that I I like I was looking at the at the list of Champions and scores and I like that the scores are all over the place there was a 4 under that won in I think 82 and and ston shot 20 under so I like the fact that scores are all over there it’s relying on the weather obviously as all the Scottish links do you know I I agree with you I think it’s kind of nondescript it’s got the postage stamp obviously we know all about that um it’s a true Lynx goes out and comes back um I I hope we get some weather that’s all I’m going say I hope we get some weather if you look at the the winning scores the par has changed through the years but you could like 12 to 14 has kind of been the number uh Stenson went insane so did Phil uh which was scintillating what do you thinking TR well I love that now that he’s not playing he’s cheering for Carnage there the what if you’re out there walking having a call shot no he won’t be he’ll be with me up in a covered up found out where we were sitting wait till you see where he’s sitting it’s he’s he’s going to be just fine watching the Carnage out there and Johnson uh attempting shots late at night that’ll be great um I have been to more than 10 of the other three Majors each I’ve only been to five opens and this is one of them that I went to it was the first one that I’ve ever been to and it’s certainly was the best um Phil Mickelson would have won almost every other open ever played is the first thing that I remember about that day and walking with the two of them and the crowds were so electric there it was it was the the spectating was just Sensational and the way that everybody followed those two around the golf course I also remember beef and Andrew Johnston and the run that he made and he kind of became the darling of the event um and then I I did an interview with Henrik stensson afterwards and my first question was can I borrow your 3-wood that guy you keep talking about the Ser Tech that’s a good pull by the way with Todd Hamilton uh the three-wood that Stinson used to Perfection there to win that open is something that I’ll never forget but it was a thrilling duel Tony jacine was with us on the postgame show that night that we did and Tony jacn after it was over said you know with all due respect to Tom Watson and Jack Nicholas this was a better 18-hole duel than the one we saw at Turnberry Now history will remember Watson and Nicholas more favorably at Turnberry but the actual competition from start to finish was unbelievable that day so you know this story you guys probably don’t so 2016 was the first year that NBC had the Open Championship package um and so it was it was the year that Mike too came over from ESPN so it’s his first assignment and so they have him doing various number of things mostly kind of Hosting doing kind of up you know top of the hour bottom of the hour put them on camera so anyway melson shoots 63 on Thursday and he lips out for 62 and so the producers who have not worked with Mike before like all right Mike can you do a 60c recap we’ll run a highlight rip and you do 60 seconds and he’s like sure that’s fine they go all right we’ll write the script and we will um we’ll get it to you we want to do this in like 12 minutes he’s like that’s fine you don’t have to write any thing they’re like we don’t okay well let us show you the Highlight rip I know what the highlights are and he’s not being arrogant he’s like I I know what they are just you can do it just run it I got it and they’re like and they’re looking at each other like okay we don’t have anybody who can do that like he’s not going to he’s not going to write a script he’s not going to let us write a script he’s not going to let us show the Highlight rip he’s just going to do this cold on live television so they run it and he goes through this thing hits the post on a dime and goes to break and they they look at each other like oh my God I think we made the right hire so at the end of the week everybody gets on the plane to fly back to the States and he’s sitting on one side of the aisle Dan Hicks is sitting on the other side of the aisle and basically the entire broadcast team is all right front of the plane and so they get to a cruising altitude and too stands up to go to the bathroom and Hicks looks at him and goes now he’s going to fly the plane he does it all it’s unbel we’ve worked with him at the master he is he there’s no one that is more prepared to call a sporting event than Mike too it’s he is brilliant he also can be having personal conversations with his family while calling the Masters on his iPad which I’ve learned which is remarkable too incredible yeah trun is kind of crude um you know six out going south then you kind of go Inland in different directions and then you play the last six North toward the clubhouse like you said the postage stamp 1011 blind shots 11’s a beast it’s interesting about 97 that was also Tiger’s first open as a professional and it was I I was like what are you doing man like you you have no game plan I thought that there was he figured it out uh soon enough how to play over there um yeah it’s good it’s good it’s not it’s not as good as the one in my estimation down the road that currently isn’t part of the Roa well there’s no question and there’s obviously some politics involved in that um of course we’re talking about Turnberry which is not far away a lot of people that are going over the open will be trying to get on and play Trump Turnberry or Western Gales or Prestwick which of course is where the open started that’s like 10 15 minutes from the golf course by the way but um trun to your point has probably benefited from the fact that Turnberry is not in the Roto yeah I I I I think that’s fair um like you said about the winners a lot of Americans have won that just the the leaderboard the final leaderboard in 16 I think is a microcosm of what you get there and what you’ve gotten there Beyond Stenson and Phil JB Holmes third Stricker fourth Garcia Hatton and maroy fifth beef eighth and then tying for 10th Bill hos one of two top 10 and a major for Bill DJ who who stealthly actually has a pretty good record in the open and then sa kelon gotta love when a sain Kelson jumps up for a top 10 there you go so and and you can look at you can look at ‘ 04 uh you can certainly look at 97 it’s eclectic it is it is a kaleidoscope of style which I think is not necessarily confined to true and I think that’s the open it it is it is look Brian Harmon embodies what the open is if if you’re right that week it doesn’t matter and oh by the way this golf course is not even 7200 yards it’s 7150 that’s that’s that is small by today’s standards but it’s the open I thought there was another cool story from that 16 open where Colin Montgomery qualified for it and that’s where his dad was the Secretary of he I was watching a recap uh on YouTube of of the 16 and he was the first to play on on Thursday teed it off and he he told a story where his house used to be kind of behind the first te I Haven it’s I know the first hole is right on the water and you turn the other direction and his house was like the fifth one down he said as a kid he would run upstairs in the afternoons in the fall and look over to the first te see if it was open and if it was he’d just grab his clubs run out and go play which I think is I think that’s what a cool story about and he ended up making the cut and playing decent for a 50s something guy one more thing Harold Barner made the cut in the uh 2016 open at TR he came over to Ron green and me and saw us and he said are the hey are the two of you playing Prestwick tomorrow and we said as a matter of fact we are he said i’ join you but I just made the cut in the British bleeping open so I thought that that was a pretty good and everyone that knows Harold knows that that word that I bleeped out was definitely included um but that that uh that was definitely a fun moment memory for us U of course hv3 being another chartin but to your point I’m interested to hear what you said to to his question Brendan because I was thinking this driving over here today to do this are there more people that have a chance to win the open than the other three Majors yeah very much so I mean for one the length of the golf course y I mean that brings everybody in the field there’s also an element of luck I mean abolutely there’s a huge element of luck T times T times for one um bounces you can get some really odd bounces um I think it it it’s the the cool part about the British Open is that that brings everybody back in I I think that’s it’s so hard to pick an overwhelming favorite come open time yeah no I’m I I think that’s that’s true there’s luck I mean there’s no doubt draw you associate luck of draw more with this major than any other I I think we all like the the the PGA in May but part of me is feeling a sense of of kind of like my god really it’s so condensed yeah it’s over man are you feeling that because of the state of golf I don’t think so I I’m feeling that because in in concert with the decision by the PGA Tour to essentially frontload signature series events not have any right before the FedEx Cup playoffs that’s over the major championship season is going to be over and we feel like there’s still a fair amount of Summer left if Bryson Des Shambo and a handful of others were playing in significant premium level men’s professional tournaments that postdated the open I wonder how we would feel I’m not ready to go there until we ever get to a world I hope we one day do where we have all of the players we want playing in the 10 or 15 other biggest events of the year and if and maybe there’s a chance we’d still feel the way that you feel right now but I I can’t say yes I feel that way until we ever get unification yeah I mean there’s definitely sadness that that this is the last major of the year but fortunately and I know what you’re going to say but I mean we do have the Olympics which I think is is I look forward to it and the playoffs other I just it’s so unfortunate that the tour championship format is just the way it is I wish there was a better way to get that done to where it would have the UMP that it that it should um but H yeah the playoffs they lack for me a little bit yeah I I agree there is kind of a a sense of sadness that it feels like the the majority of our season is over after this after the open in a couple weeks this’s the last thing they want us to say but it I I I can’t get around the way that I feel um and look I’m looking forward to the Olympics I think that time is on the side of the Olympic golf program particularly if by 28 we have potentially mixed team competition that that that is added to it I am looking forward uh to Castle Pines being a site for one of the playoff events I I really am I’m excited for the club and their membership uh and and to see a golf course like that similarly when we just saw recently the US Senior Open I think places that are being seen for the first time aerially like we saw at Piner I thought number two looked fantastic from drone texture color it was fabulous I thought Newport same thing for the US Senior Open I think trun will will show itself in a beautiful way I think Castle Pines will as well I can’t wait to see East Lake after Andrew Green’s restoration renovation I just I I’m still for the PGA in May I just felt like my God this went by so quickly well I do experience sadness that it’s over when the majors are over especially in in the current condition we’re in in men’s professional golf and the fact that you know I there wasn’t one time and I don’t know about you guys but there wasn’t one time during the US Open where I thought this is Liv versus the PGA Tour I just thought this is Bryson versus Rory this is the best players in the world this is awesome you know and I love this this is what I want throughout the entire year and maybe we’ll get something similar to that the Open Championship and I am sad that that’s the last time we get it in 2024 all right so who needs a week more Rah or Kea I’m both of them but it’s got to be Raam more so I mean his major season has been awful it’s been Dreadful it’s been Dreadful I mean a little bit unlucky obviously with the foot but I mean outside of that what a miscut and a TI for 45th um yeah he needs one and he hasn’t done himself any favors either the the press conferences that he’s done he’s I know you talked about it the other day talking out of both sides of his mouth um pissed off a couple guys I know Aaron oberholser was Furious wanted to jump through the camera and strangle him um but yeah Rah needs a week he really does he needs to get himself into contention he needs to show people the player that he is is it ROM for you too I I so over John ROM at the moment I I the way he’s handled himself this year I couldn’t care less if he needs a good week or not I’m I’m rooting for I’m rooting for K to be in in the mix okay you’re rooting for K to be in the mix um the ROM fatigue I get it I mean I he he you and I have been in the room for for these major championship pressers and there is an ER of defensiveness that he’s just waiting for something to trigger him so that he can bow up and and either defend his position rationalize his position and it’s the weirdest kind of display of buyers remorse that I think I’ve ever seen yeah they’re it definitely feels like there’s some of that that’s going on with him right now I mean the guy got hundreds of millions of dollars to go play good for him but there seems like he is having some fomo in 2024 I don’t think that there’s I don’t think that Brooks kepka um having somewhat of an underwhelming major championship year does much to his legacy at all I think that his his I think that his professional Legacy is intact this guy is made for the major championships yeah and so he could he could have three straight disappointing years in my mind and still be seen as an absolute ringer when it comes to a major yeah I think that’s that’s fair because five is five and and again I’m there there’s this interest in me and him having the most imbalanced historical resume of all time which he already does I mean he already does for somebody who’s won five Majors to have the modesty of winning so infrequently outside of it wherever he’s playing um makes me intrigued to see him get the mix and I was out there on Thursday morning he’s three under early uh at the US Open I’m going I’ll be a son of a gun here we go again and he squandered some shots coming in he shoots levelar which was fine and then Friday got weird and he shot five over and you’re going my God he’s just he’s going to be first out on Saturday morning which he was I’m a little surprised he’s never had a real chance in an open I mean like the one at Port Rush that’s correct he was in the mix but um you haven’t seen him with a few holes to go we’ve seen him obviously in 19 at the Masters come real close when tiger won and and then obviously last year when Rah won at the Masters and he’s won the the other two majors but I am a little surprised we haven’t seen him in the mix I think going back in time I probably would have predicted he would better in this one than he did the others but uh maybe that changes cun I one last thing about Rah you know that Scotty’s year has to chafe him like like if I was over there and again I think every great player should think that that it would be different if I was trading blows with them I don’t think it would be um but but that has to I think irritate the wound this weird psychological wound you’re like I don’t care I don’t want to talk about him let’s move on to the next subject sure and he thought he would have the ability to do both and he’s just the the cluelessness and the arrogance that he showed by thinking he would be the Difference Maker for getting this deal done for the two of them I’m just I I hope he does have remorse I hope he feels terrible about his decision and I hope it does chap his ass completely that he’s not competing at the highest level he made that decision and he arrogantly is wrong and and I’m done with it done with it all right so let me let me get a quick thought on on on Patty ice here he had never been within five shot to the lead going into a final round of a major in his career which is hard to Fathom um he had that distant third at Beth Page so it wasn’t it wasn’t like he’s in the he’s in the deep end of the pool late in the game was that a breakthrough for him do you think for for Klay to be really legitimately in the throws of it yeah I think so I think he’s more of going to look at that like okay I’m where I should be now I I don’t think he’s going to look at that right now I know where I need to be I think he’s going to be looking at it I should be there every time I’m that good of a player I don’t think it’s going to be like a major major breakthrough okay I mean on some he did not even play well Sunday and he’s playing with Rory it’s this whole Ridder cup Hat Gate thing and he just kept hanging around and Rory ascended and Patrick just kept hanging around and then Rory backed up and Patrick had a leg legitimate chance to be in a playoff with a couple holes I it was it was weird to me and I think it it’s the no lineup guys that call him the house cat or maybe it’s Andy Johnson like he’s just always hanging around and I but he really isn’t though that’s just like in Majors he’s never hanging around and that’s why I do agree that this is kind of a big deal that he didn’t have his best stuff and he was able to hang around even Saturday I didn’t think he had his best stuff and was just right there yeah you’re I I agree with that assessment of his play both Saturday and Sunday he’s not the Mike McDermot of major championship golf hanging around hanging around he doesn’t have alligator blood but he did hang around in this one he did but but are you saying that you think that that is helping his cause at trun uh no I’m not I’m not trying to LEAP to that I’m just I’m wondering if you guys think that this will kind of be foreshadowing to him contending more in major I would think that he would he would have a real chance if not win a major championship I I sort of be surprised if it doesn’t happen in the next 10 years as talented as he is but I’m interested to hear your thought next 10 years if he has a chance to win a major yeah I would say that he’s got a 10year window to win a major Champion yeah I agree with that but I don’t think he’s going to look back at this event when he does win a major that’s this and say that that was I think he’s going to look back at the PGA when his good boy Xander chafl got that first major and I think that is maybe the biggest motivational factor for him right now yeah uh I I I don’t know what affects him I you know what I mean like does that’s actually where I was going to go it is fascinating to watch the way he interacts with other humans like I mean all of them and it’s just when he goes to the first tea and he fist bumps every person and they try to shake his hand and he fist pumps every single person and it’s not just Rory Moy and the you awkwardness of that relationship it is everybody that he encounters throughout the time he is competing there is an awkwardness to the way he communicates and the person that’s trying to communicate back whether it’s verbal or non-verbal doesn’t know what to do it’s it really is it’s he is he is one of the more unique people you’ll ever see I agree it’s bumper bust you’re not getting a handshake out of him uh not happening I think his post round interviews are hilarious with no intention of being funny like when I listen to him on US Open radio and we’re playing these inter great actually yeah but it’s like you know you played really well thanks thanks very much um I don’t know what it means yes he has the toolkit to win a major um and and it’s weird how he didn’t play well and he’s on to the 18th green you’re going he wraps this in he’s in the playoff which would have been weird if he’s shaking Rory’s hand which had to be one of the most I mean I if I was Rory after that and it’s Klay and it’s Joe and it’s not personal but because of the history I thought that even made it more weird and then they started chanting USA which was a bad look yeah bad look for sure all right speaking of Americans um some American have had peculiar kind of wandering years spe we know that they’re extenuating circumstances Justin Thomas had a nice warm-hearted week at um at the at the PJ of Valhalla which was a home game for him and then he was terrible at Piner utterly terrible from the moment uh the championship started and then wendam Clark who after the players I’m going this dude is the dude man um what do you make of those three I think Windham Clark maybe expectations caught up with him a little bit I think he tried to I think he got a little big for his britches and going into the Masters and everybody talking about we’re going to have the first first time winner since I know I’ve you’ve heard me say this but I think that had a lot to do with it he had a good week somewhere recently that he started to play a little bit better but for me wam Clark at the open he’s so one-dimensional with that fady hits you have to be able to hit trap draws you have to be able to hit all these other shots I I just see him having zero chance for Success at an Open Championship right now okay JT surprised me at pineur I really thought he was going to play well there off the Valhalla I I walked quite a bit with him in a practice round as well um game looked to be in good shape looked like he had a really good game plan I was surprised that he struggled I thought that was going to be a a good golf course for him a good setup for him I I thought he was going to be one of those guys that would actually contend clearly you watched the five clubs US Open preview cuz so did I uh and I I was I was very surprised by his performance there uh at the at the US Open I don’t know if it’s something just mental going on with him the putter still is a major problem for him in 2024 um like you said with spe you know maybe there’s more to the wrist than than he’s letting on and I you stole the words time out my mouth with wendam Clark Justin Thomas when he’s at his best we all Marvel at how he has every single shot necessary and play it both ways high low into the wind with the win you know low shot High shot uh half shot everything Windam Clark plays one shot every single time this high cut every single time and I do wonder if maybe you need more if you’re going to win major championships other major championships you know it also we’ll have hopefully a conversation about this before the President’s Cup but this is an American team that’s going to assemble in Montreal that and I know that you liked AA bti at the beginning of the year to be on the team he’s going to be on the team there’s no doubt uh but there’s going to be some more names and F that I that certainly I think all of us expected cuz like a like a quarter of that team hadn’t fired in 2024 well I’m going to go out and make a bold prediction Jordan be will not be on that team for multiple reasons he’s like 24th in the standings and he’s going to be recovering from a wrist surgery I would have to think but I think that’s going to be good for this President’s Cup team maybe get some fresh blood and just not have this cookie cutter core that they continue to pick but yeah I mean Justin Thomas is way out it’s going to be interesting what do you think you were on one of these team international well I don’t think that was a very bold prediction I don’t think there a chance of Jordan SM going to be on the team way to State the obvious there um yeah it’s going to be a different look it’s going to be a very different look um but that’s a lot of young guys that are going to be excited to be out there playing it should be it’ be a fun watch I’m pumped to see sah on the team if in fact that happens yeah I think it’s I think it is going to happen I think both of them are going to be on the side and to your point to me I look at this as USA Golf I don’t look at president I know what they are as a brand um indoctrinating both of these young guys for potentially what will be a blender uh at Beth Page next year I I think is a good thing because look as much as I want to believe in the long-term ability of of people like Thomas and spe guys go they EB and they never Flow again I think they both will they’re in their early 30s um but I think that that that the chance to see some of these younger guys for their first time uh whether it’s at a necessity or whatever the reason it’s happening in Montreal do you think there’s anything to the fact that we’re going to start seeing a much shorter career by a professional golfer in that window shrinking and making what a guy like Rory’s done and the consistency he’s had but his major championship window is closing pretty quick and you see all these young guys the done laps this Luke Clanton who arguably should have been been tied for low amiter at Pinehurst the what he did in Detroit last week like I think you’re going to start seeing I mean we were pushed out at 35 and and I think you’re starting to see these guys just get pushed out because spe you know is pretty average off the team now even though he’s picked up a lot of distance his wedge game and putting got him by but is that good enough anymore for him to be the dominant player that he was I love this conversation I think it’s I mean it’s a kind of conversation we could have you know for a long long time it like going back to what you said about kley there’s no doubt could he theoretically win a major 10 years from now at 41 I guess but I do wonder about the determination the drive the willingness to dig in on what is what is required with waves of kids who don’t care who you are who are ready to take your place at the top of the food chain when you have 15-year-old kids who were showing like and they look 15 physically but they have a refinement to their skill you’re going okay that that kid is freakish well it it to Johnson’s Point I’ve done the SEC golf tournament in SE Island for the last seven eight years you’ve seen all this Talent Davis Thompson almost won the tournament as we’re doing this in Detroit on Sunday finished tied for second one shot back he’s somebody that I saw all four years play at the University of Georgia Nick Dunlap was another at Alabama there are so many of these guys that immediately are coming out there and contending to win tournaments which that wasn’t the case when you guys were coming out of college that wasn’t the case for our entire lives until the last seven eight years getting back to kentley though I think he’s one that’s going to be around for a long time he’s got a single-mindedness of selfishness about him it’s it’s golf golf golf no you’re right he he’ll probably be winning us senior opens when he’s 67 years old um yeah I just I I think that there are elements to all this optimization this and what what guys are doing to to compress the golf ball now um I think the physical toll even though you can say well they don’t have to play as much I think part of that and then also this is the human condition when you go really honey we got 200 million large sitting there growing every day you know what 6 hours getting lost in the pursuit of perfection which I used to do five seven 10 years ago I ain’t doing that and I don’t is DJ a perfect example of that yeah he is and I I’m not judging him either yeah no not at all all right let let’s get to some who had great weeks not particularly surprising I think about two maybe about the third ludvig fenal Hatton off of the US Open who do you who do you feel kind of most bullish about it tro TL Hatton um I think where it is and his experience over there would um would probably be the reason why I’d pick him over those other two fale if memory serves me correct I think he played well at at trun at least for a couple of days there um back in 2016 I feel like because of what you said earlier I think it’s a little harder to learn how to win an Open Championship than it is the others I realize morawa did it in his first try um but ludvig especially around the greens I think is going to have to and he it’s such a high ball there um yeah I’d go Hatton I think out of those three and finish tied fifth in 2016 is best finish it an open I I’m not ready to jump off this ludvig train yet I mean why would you yeah he’s he L himself into the final group on the weekend I know he didn’t had two blowups he blew up on the 13th hole on Saturday and then he shot himself out of any chance of being in the golf tournament on the second hole on Sunday yeah but the fact that he continues to learn I mean this is still his first go round all all these Majors uh I’m not ready to jump you’ll start with him yep I’ll start with him okay I agree with ludic and and I know he hits the ball high but he hits a heavy ball yeah he does and in the wind you have it’s like you compress it and it just has a way of of of getting cutting through the wind and fenale fenale can hit the ball pretty low and and I I I I like all the guys I like all three of those players to be in the top 15 top 20 F now’s putter um can be skittish to say the least slower greens that’s what I was going to say so even though you may be dealing with 15 18 25 mph wind gust you’ll take the slower speeds as being an advantage for him and he’s when since he’s gone to this claw he’s his handle raised a lot the the putter is Sol I mean I I think he’s I think he’s going to have a good week okay uh you mentioned morwa Colin has had an excellent season he is similarly I I think to to Xander even though Colin has won two majors is going through this period where yes he won last fall but there is this sense that he keeps knocking and he also feels in a good way kind of overlooked like you keep focusing on all these other guys and I like his chipping about him even the US Open he battled on the weekend finished in the top 15 what about morwa well said there and it used to be morawa would just be the ultimate closer you wouldn’t see him week by week by week top 10 it he would just show up on a leaderboard and win the tournament and then he disappear for a few months and then he come back and win a tournament again now it’s kind of been the opposite of that in 2024 which I think is a good sign to see this consistent performance and also think to Johnson’s point with slower greens over at trun that’s an advantage for him I think sometimes on the weekend he gets a little uncomfortable with the speed of these greens I don’t think that’ll be the case at trun I think he’s got a real chance to win a second clear J with you on that I agree with what you said about this chippiness he’s got this little Underdog mentality going at the moment like what about me um I I think that’s played huge into his favor um and he has he’s got that consistency the short game’s improved a ton he’s he’s chipping the ball much better than he did I think the iron game’s always going to be very good drives it straight enough I think he’ll be a contender he’s certainly not my favorite to win but I think he’ll be a contender okay he is my favorite he is your favorite okay he shown me a lot this year and speaking about heavy balls when you when you hit it off when you when you hit it no no everyone will love it doesn’t matter what he does or says when you hit it off the center of the face like Colin morawa does like a ludvic oberg I know he’s a little one-dimensional with the fade but he doesn’t fade it quite as much as as wam does and it is a strong strike sometimes Windham gets that wipey sort of fade that I mean can you imagine Windam Clark playing in a hard left to right wind on an awkward t-shot how far left he’d have to start it I just don’t see Mor a kawa’s shot shape being that big of a factor it’s interesting if they get a cross wind uh for someone like wam Clark whether it’s playing South out or playing North in one of those stretches he’s going to be having to deal with that uh which I think is a factor which will get me to another guy here in a moment I I like morawa he’s not my favorite but I I I would be very surprised if he was not in the mix you’re right his chipping has gotten better but it seems like on the weekend he makes nothing I know it just feels that way and his stats back it up his you called every shot at Valhalla on the radio on Sunday just he didn’t make anything I mean he played better than anybody it was demoralizing and you could tell but I think he’s going to grow from that and learn from that and be a little bit more aggressive with his putts all right speaking of kind of having one shot tiger used to have nine windows open now he’s pretty one-dimensional what is his reality I don’t have High Hopes I did going into the year think that this might be the best chance just because of the of the fact that it’s not that hard of a walk neither is Pinehurst um Pinehurst he had he had the climate that is what you would think would be best hot warm but back to Johnson’s point about Windam Clark playing one shot there is no one that I’ve ever seen that has more creativity than Tiger Woods but in 2024 he’s playing one shot he’s playing a lesser version of that Windam Clark shot every single time just playing this cut which is putting it into the Fairway but he’s playing that same shot into the green too and and I do wonder if I I don’t wonder I’m pretty certain that tiger does not trust his ability to move off that right leg because there’s not much left there in the bottom part of his right leg to really power through and finish a swing I don’t and who could blame it give the condition of that leg and that being the case I don’t think that he is he trusts his body to be able to play the necessary shot given what the elements are uh and that being the case I I don’t have many expectations for him going into this yeah did you think this whole year for him would be his flat I mean really not any like little mini Crescendo I thought honestly I thought we would see a little bit more I think he was legitimately disapp appointed leaving pineur I think he felt like his body was feeling good enough to where he actually could have played well and just couldn’t get it done it was because of the rust I thought his gate looked good I thought he looked good and a little bit leaner too not as and I think he’s kind of viewing this if he gets the correct weather and everything correct over there in Scotland which is a huge if obviously I think he’s viewing this as his best chance to actually still be somewhat relevant yeah I I mean I I walked with him Thursday featured group for peacock and watched every one of his shots I thought he walked great drove it well putted nicely early but every single iron shot was hung out to the right short right bad wipy misses I think you’re right because this is the culmination of the most golf he’s played in a while and we haven’t had that big of a break so maybe if he could take some some stuff I just I just there’s no way to play five events a year and think that you can do better than finish 30th there’s just you just can’t do it you and I have been there too many times there’s just the the the the touch the feel uh the the easy up and downs the momentum Keepers right and and not to mention just standing on an awkward t- shot and being able to say oh well I hit this same shot with the same win last week yeah this is how I played it I I just think you lose so much being Rusty the um 2025 the green lighting of him into any event essentially he would want to play um does that give you a modest amount of hope that maybe he could play one or two more events again he’s got to want to do it he’s got to be able to do it physically I don’t think he’ll do it you don’t think he’s going to take advantage of something I think we’ll see him at the hero yeah if that’s what I mean between July I think the next time after we see him I mean in 2025 yeah yeah being able to plan any signature series event yeah um I I don’t know the answer to that yet it he certainly to Johnson’s Point looks like somebody that’s not playing a lot of golf yeah and when he shows up at these major championships if there’s anybody that could do it it would be him but we talked about this I think the last time we did one of these I I would have actually somewhat higher expectations for him in 2026 when he’s 50 years old if in fact he is going to go get in the cart and play in a few more tournaments then which I think he will and and if that’s the case if he’s able to do that and then play in a major championship then I would have much more confidence in those approach shots than I currently do I think that’s a good that’s a good way to look at it and you can say well he’s in a cart it doesn’t matter he’s hitting competitive golf shots right uh under whatever duress it will be and I also think that 26 will be interesting because of course the US Senior Open is at scota that year really the place that Nicholas grew up at he’s going to go for his 10th USGA title hell yeah he is I mean I that’s cool that’s for another time um is there somebody you have a feeling about about somebody you like Zack Blair and this is not about winning it’s about a guy having a good week and somebody who is your guy you got a little impish grin on your face I got a feeling about Ernie ell’s look at you like what a that is one of the alltime Homer cards ever cup partner I’m still speaking P we’ve seen it in in opens before yes we have Tom Watson came within a foot of winning one uh Greg Norman was there for a long time um I think there is an experience to playing Lynx golf that Ernie has he’s stting to play good golf one twice I believe in a row out on Champions he’s playing well again this week in Newport I know they got a Monday finish um I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Ernie’s name up there and Steve Stricker played well there in 16 at 49 years old I mean that’s I I’m I’ll take him back easy okay I got a I got Austin ekro I I love his game Oklahoma State guy knows how to play in the wind hits the ball really consistently he’s a ball striking fool he’s gotten his first win on the PGA tour at a Wy Venue at the cognizant classic at PGA National I’ll snack okay do we have to be outside the top 50 here CU these guys have just pulled some pretty good rabbits out of their hat yeah I mean I think we’ll evaluate how much cuz minoy was who I was going to go with but that but that might be that might be too too good of a player I guess what would he be like what would he what would you what would you characterize le as he hasn’t won he hasn’t won the PG I’m fine with that uh I I love what I’ve seen from him all year and especially what we’ve seen the last few weeks he’s played all over the world and has had success all over the world um I I I like Min W Le’s chances going into the open okay uh this this guy just recently lost a playoff to Marcel seam Tom McKibbon um he got in by virtue of of what happened in Italy he is a child but if you look at again same thing I I think of guys like Paul Dunn um and you’re going who the and I think maybe people in golf know Tom McKibben is I mean he’s from Rory’s part of the world he looks like the kid he’s not that little he’s actually yeah he’s very skinny I mean he looks like the junior golfer that you go I got to play with this kid really so you say that to the you know the starter and then you go out there and the get shoot 7 under par he did play a practice round with Rory at the US Open and on the second hole I asked Rory what do you know about this kid he turned around you mean this kid back here who was 40 yards behind him off the tea and he said no no I’ll tell you his short game is one that Rory was really uh compliment uh complimenting so uh yeah obviously just almost won I love the the US Open is open certainly and they have an international qualifier the the Open Championship really you get some names you go and I look forward to you and you and you pronouncing some of them when they jump up on leard on Thursday which is fantastic we’re going to Brendan for that uh give me a long shot uh give me somebody I know Ernie’s a long shot that’s a pretty good one there yeah I was going to say minwu Lee but I he’s not in the long shot category I’m go with that David P or P however you po that guy yeah po he’s like a human Cattail talk about thin and I he he was wearing the same outfit that Sergio was on the weekend was fire engine red slacks now he’s a talent yeah he’s on that he’s on the Spanish Olympic team um poge I like it I I don’t know that this is a long shot but I’m going with someone who I think is a long shot to win that I think can win and that’s Tommy Fleetwood okay yeah he’s not a long shot no and and but I he’s been all I’ve been thinking a lot about Fleetwood going into this open and wondering is it ever going to happen and is there something mentally that has to happen in order for him to achieve that uh I was G to actually say Marcel seam as my long shot um before you just brought him up yeah we’ve seen him a few years ago in the open I think when Mor cell won in England in 2021 he was right there in the mix um obviously playing well can’t pull off the man bun good for him but um look this guy he won a golf tournament in 2004 and just won another one 20 years later yeah I I mean to keep after it and you see these kids like the kidy beating the playoff yeah well I love what I saw too with the way that he had to get into that playoff and then and then ultimately winning in the playoff too a lot of passion he’ll he’ll kind of like beef did eight years ago he’ll rally the fans and he’ll kind of become a fan favor he plays to the crowd yeah that could help him he does well him and Antoine Rosner were were spitting out I mean they were going in full reverse on that inward nine in Italy I mean I think they both shot three over uh coming in anyway all right I’ll give you one Maverick McNeely is my long shot first time playing in it um if you look at his season he doesn’t miss Cuts he he is generally around the top 25 and and Maverick is the kind of guy one a very bright young man but also a guy who has appreciation acceptance gratitude and will Embrace this I think he is the kind of kid young man who go over there and and really be smitten with all of it uh and I wouldn’t be surprised if he finish the top 25 all right give me um give me somebody a star who you think is not going to have a great week Windam Clark okay I I think he’s definitely a star um for what we talked about one-dimensional one shot shape and lacking confidence hasn’t played well since the PLAYERS Championship um I think he’s going to go over there and struggle okay I was going to say Wham Clark as well but I’m going to go with somebody different that was probably should have won the golf tournament in Detroit and that’s Cameron young showed me a lot of negative ity on that back n and a lot of frustration when he was missing putt after Putt and I just feel like I feel like it’s starting to wear on him and I think he’s gonna go over there and I think he’s really going to struggle I think that was a big I think that was a bad Sunday for him and I think it’s going to be I think he’s going to struggle to finish this year out he’s so talented he shot 59 in Harford smile man like it’s unbelievable how talented you are yeah he’s very hard on himself out there that’s he he really is and I I look I don’t want anyone like you need to be different you are who you are but there is this there is this like you look at him and you go does this is there any joy in doing this it’s hard out there I mean both I mean speak to it I mean at times you don’t think about you know the privilege you think about how hard of a job it is and it’s is an incredibly difficult job especially with the pressure you put on yourself um maybe this is some reverse psychology but I’m picking Rory maroy miss the cut week oh miss the cut okay start to miss the cut wow uh I think R we usually come in here and pick him to win the event it doesn’t go so well so we’re going to try him missing the cut instead but I will tell you to Brendan’s point I I do think there’s some residue there I I think that the statement that he put out the next day was a great one and and he is someone that’s resilient and I expect him ultimately to bounce back Dustin Johnson the year after missing a putt like that won the US Open it wouldn’t surpris me if we go to Oakmont next year and Rory mroy wins the US Open but I do think as it’s so fresh weeks after it happened um there is a little bit of a carryover effect there yeah understandable I I think it’s Ram I think this major championship season is going to the curtain’s going to come down and he’s going to go my God what happened and and I don’t see him coming out of this and now again and I he hadn’t won the event so does he do a pre-tournament presser I don’t know we advised him before the US Open stay out and he walks in with a flipflop and he’s kind of hobbling around and then two hours later and you in communication with his team the day before and it’s like is he coming he’s coming he comes he speaks he leaves it’s over yeah um I I think it’s the major season is going to end without him you know being more than than just the footnote of being a great player who had a dreadful major championship season is he still a star oh absolutely look at you are really dth until he wins and he’s drinking out you know change this was how you treated brys you should not like you yeah do wait impersonate him again I love it I think that’s his impersonation of me actually all right who’s winning this thing a guy who’s definitely not a long shot Tommy Fleetwood wow there a guy that missed his first three cuts at the Open Championship since then has four top 10 in his last six including a runner up um look at all the major starts his last AG eight major starts his worst finish was 33rd at the Masters last year he is repeated you know played well in the biggest events you you said is it ever going to happen there is a kind of a West Woody feel and even kind of a Montgomery like this would mean like the weight of the world kind of thing for that region of the of the world uh it would be a very popular win for sure I I like his game I really do speaking of that heavy ball he’s a guy that doesn’t mind hitting that flat draw with the cross breezes I mean we both know that works really well in the wind I like Tommy Fleetwood yeah Port Rush idled that whole day he just never could get it in overdrive well and this the same was the case last year with with Brian Haron over the weekend and you know in his backyard everybody is trying to pull Tommy Fleetwood around the course and they’re cat calling Brian Harmon and it had the had the reverse effect it’s amazing how we come in here and I think oh I’ve got one that Johnson and Brendan are going to pick and are aren’t going to pick and then they take both of the guys that I was thinking about with uh with Fleetwood and morawa but uh to your point I do wonder if there’s something I know Sergio won the Masters but Sergio Montgomery Westwood all these Ridder cup ringers that are so good in the Ryder Cup and Tommy Fleetwood is as good as those guys are he’s on that sort of trajectory but when it comes to individual playing Majors it it’s like there’s something between the ears especially with the putter uh but I I do I think he has a genuine chance to win but obviously I can’t go with him or I and I can’t go with moraa either even though that I like those two picks Xander sofle is going to win a second major in 2024 nice redirect wow how many times will you can you do the Tommy I mean how many times will that be bellowed by the fans right six or eight deep in Guinness uh he I mean it would be they’ll try to carry him over the line we have sat here for an hour and and we talked about Sheffer for just a minute as it pertained uh to Piner we just passing him by huh well we are um I do I I’d be stunned if he’s not in the top 10 the one reason why I’m not picking him to win the event is he’s he’s taking the longest break he’s taken all year going into this event he is not playing between Hartford and the Open Championship he playing the open playing the Olympics playing the playoffs it is a three-week break so is that what he had before the PGA because of the baby wasn’t it 3 weeks he played look what happened there he played he played harbort toown and yet was that the same amount after after Harbortown yeah yeah he doesn’t get incarcerated this will actually this will actually be a four-week break okay yeah okay so that is got you hedging yeah okay um the guy I’m picking um he’s won this thing before and since then he’s finished second third fourth fifth and sixth in this event it is always darkest before the dawn Rory is going to win win the Open Championship this is the road that it’s and I’m not trying to be weird and hot takery and oo um yeah I I I having having seen the Arsenal and and the the array of shots that he now possesses the fighting of the golf ball look there’s NE there’s no getting around when he left there that that had to be the low point he couldn’t have been it anymore by LA or even the old courts which I think was stinging that was a body blow what happened at Pinehurst I think he’s going to win I I think that this is going to this is the road that it’s going to take 10 years minus a month August of 2014 for him to win another major um and by the way Phil it was in the same circumstances he too was trying across the line at a US Open at Maran and with wedges in hand was gutted by what he did on 13 and 15 at Marian and goes to a place and you were in the field that week at mirfield and played one of the great magical rounds we’ve ever seen and and got up off the mat and did it by the way Adam Scott in 12 in a Us in an Open Championship you were in bogey bogy bogy Bogey and I know it wasn’t a month later it was eight months later he won the Masters the next spring resilience is the calling card of the job you two chose and this is as low on the mat as he’s ever been I think he’s going to rise and win you need do you need to see anything out of him at the Scottish it’d be nice it’d be nice um yeah but again I just I I watched the way you were out there this guy this is not just up in the air tight draw Apex of 11 16 this is 37 ft 57 ft and by the way the chipping from tight lies is at a different level he has a repertoire that I think is the reason why second third fourth fifth six since he’s won this was not a oneof in 14 can’t wait for him to have The clar Jug next to Bryan and me when we do that winning interview look I cheer I cheer for the sport more than anything and there is nothing that would be a bigger maybe sans’s tiger winning the the the open but there would aside from that there is nothing that would be bigger than that it’d be massive for the sport if it were to happen and I think there’s a lot going you know look his his personal life has been on display this year let alone what just happened with the US Open I think there’s been a whole lot for him to handle uh I hope you’re right but um and if he does it with all of that going on in his life wow what a story yeah uh so before we go let’s quickly get a little golf itinerary from the three of you you don’t go over there and not play some golf where are you playing Western Gales I got to check that box haven’t done that and I hear it’s great you excellent yes um so might sneak over to preswick for some Twilight golf one one of the evenings as well I know that you have that plan yeah I’m going over early with my son we’re going to uh we’re going north flying into Inverness playing narn three days at Royal dorick uh a day at gby and then preswick on the way down the TR it’s beond yeah very excited how about you my friend Weston gal’s in PR with Tyler he just doesn’t know it yet I sh no I do know it I do know what you in mind for sure maybe the greatest thing about this whole major championship season is to obviously see what he’s done uh to be America’s golfing darling that he is but to see him emerge in the media realm but also to see him you know finding all this joy in the game personally playing offl and calling Golf and also like you said at the beginning and let me let me just say this about the team that he’s assembled which will be in modesty uh in Scotland and they get attention now there’ve been some articles written about and you’ve been a part of it obviously that the the team that calls major championship golf on your channel is as in invested in the game intellectually psychologically and emotionally as any group of people I’ve ever been around in golf uh they’re a joy to spend a week with well it means a lot that you said that and Justin wear and Jeremy Davis are the reason for it they’re the people behind the scenes doing it they’re the best in the world at doing it and so all this attention that we’re getting and all the the great accolades and the thata boys very much appreciated but it’s because of Jeremy and Justin they’re great at what they do guys have a great Open Championship I know you will enjoy those days with your son there’s nothing like days in the British aisles playing fatherson golf can’t wait the the greatest days of my life for all of us here for the whole crew here uh the people you don’t see are the most talented hope you enjoy the Open Championship see you [Music]

  1. WOW – you guys put on a hell of a show! Very enjoyable, insightful, and some good humour. My nickname for Cam Young, after you voiced your concerns about his head space, can also be Grumpy Bear!
My nickname for him is Grizzly Bear. The Grizzly is simply based on his beard. The 'Bear', obviously has the Golden Bear connection, in name only, BUT this part of his nickname is derived from his golf swing and a joke.
A Bear walks into a pub and says to the barman 'I'll have a pint of…………………. lager'. The barman responds by asking the Bear 'why the big pause?'
The Bear, with a confused look on his face, holds up his paws, looks at them, and says 'I don't know, they've always been big!'
So Cam has that pause at the top of his backswing, so if you boys don't start calling him Grizzly Bear then he definitely won't have anything to smile about!
Great show as always. Thanks, and go The Big Easy!!!
