with a win and a loss and then a bye last week the bombers on the other side surprisingly 0 and three to start the campaign and it may be time to feed their most reliable weapon yeah I think both these coaches would not just want to feature their running games but they want to go out and dominate in the Run game that starts with Brady alera for the bombers last year’s nominee for outstanding player and outstanding Canadian has been fighting through some nagging injuries to start the year he says he’s healthy he’s good to go ready to roll here tonight for the stamps Dedrick Mills is their feature tail back here and he can do it all he leads the team in receiving yards bunch of catches last week versus BC he’s been very busy and involved in the offense for Dave Dickinson who did not love an early season by week they are one and0 at home though with a win over Hamilton in week one Mich o Shay on the other side coaching the bombers who’ve not opened up 0 and three since 2012 and then again this year trying to avoid 0 and four both these teams coming in off of losses against the BC Lions and we are underway Saturday at McMahon and the return is picked up just inside the 15 taken Straight Ahead out to about the 35 by Eric Brooks now don’t get me wrong both these teams are going to throw the football it is the CFL and you’re going to have to throw it but when he does Jake Mayer in two games is completing close to 80% of his passes touchdown interception ratio at 4 to1 and actually looks like like he’s playing his best football he’s completed every single pass he’s thrown between 10 and 19 yards so far this year 11 for 11 in that midrange scenario Calgary will have the ball to start they’ll start on their own 35 moves up to the top of your screen three options out to the right here for May and he’s going to open the game with a throw over the middle looking for Reggie Balton that is over his head an incomplete regie of course a big part of this Calgary offense well if you’re going to try to run the ball and and not just establish room him but feature it as we sit off the top then your interior guys have got to play well that’s Zach Williams and Bryce Bell they got to get a good push and try to get to the next level onto the linebacking Corp and that’s where dedri Mills will take it from there they want to not only establish him but feature him get him involved and get him get Jake Mayer into second and and manageable and an offense that’s not afraid to mix in the backup running back BJ Emmons as well may dumps it off there’s Mills cuts inside and they will track him down at the 40 so a quick two and out for the Calgary stamp Peters to start this football game well Calgary Calgary I I said last week actually two weeks ago cuz they had the buy but dedri Mills led the team and had a personal best six catches out of the back field so they’re sort of using those swing passes and check Downs as part of the extended running game to get it to 26 Cody Grace averaging 46 yds per punt so far this season lets this one fly from the 30 Chris Smith steps up underneath it takes it takes it cleanly at the 32 nowhere to go Calgary down the field immediately in a very short return similar starting field position for Zach colis so this is just weird it’s strange isn’t it it’s just it’s just straight weird and and the one that’s really weird to me is not one touchdown pass the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have played three games he’s attempted almost 100 passes and he doesn’t have a touchdown throw yet I don’t understand it either suits you could use the theory he’s do but he is missing weapons we’ll discuss that as we work our way through the first quarter it will start on the ground with Brady Ola pushing it ahead and a decent pickup on that first carry for Brady a huge huge part of the Winnipeg offense yeah and and that means that they’re o line again in the interior Liam Dobson Patrick nelt they’ve got to get a good push get on the second level in the linebacking court cuz they got to try and cut off Mike hway we’ll get to him in a second and that will open things up for Brady ol so Buck Pierce is up in the booth Pat Del Monaco is down on the sideline different strategies as far as their coordinators go but both of these teams want to win the ground game strer into the game early here on a second and five after five yards from Brady Olivera right around his season average and Sher fakes The Pitch Out runs right in to Allway and they’re going to try to push it ahead but no dice for the bombers there so so one of the great matchups in this one tonight is going to be Brady Oliva game inside the game if you if you want to just watch two guys go at it it’s going to be Mike Allway number seven in red versus Brady Ola and if it’s it happens to be strer who’s got you know 23 carries for the bombers in three games then it might be number seven against 17 anybody who goes up the middle for the bombers is going to run in to a two and out the other way as Jamon Sheen knocks it away Brooks takes it just inside the 20 and turns it out just shy of the 30 after a 50 yd kick for she Jake May will have the ball when we return early here in the first quarter encounter slow start in these football game suits well they get behind early I mean they’ve been outscored in the first quarter 27-1 so you know I think any coach in the league even experienced coaches start to think that they’ve got to throw it a little bit more they’ve got to throw their way out of trouble try to come back you know in a hurry and kind of have abandoned the game plan and that’s been an issue for Winnipeg Mark and Michelle as May gets it out to him quickly he’ll take it up to the 35 against his Winnipeg [Music] defense take a look at the Winnipeg Blue bomber defense Ali fad has played well off the edge and did last week in their game versus the Lions you go back and if you want to stop the run you’re going to need your guy in the middle to do that Adam big hill a couple of tackles away from 900 I going to say that again 900 career dedri Nicholls the allstars back at halfback he missed last week wonder if he was in where they have contained Alexander Hollands better last week than they did on the ground first down Calgary spinning it out beyond the 45 is dedri [Music] Mills nice spin move when he had had contact here and that’s what I meant off the top that he can do it all I mean he can run between the tackles with great power or quickness and there’s a nice spin move to get an extra three so a seveny completion to Michelle then on the ground with Mills and Calgary has a first first down of the evening back into the hands of Mills just beyond the line of scrimmage before he’s tackled by big hill now you don’t see this very often CFL teams but you know you do see the running yards 24 carries 133 BJ Emmons has taken some of those carries as they rotate through but catches 118 yards for Mills leads his team coming in after two games I had to double take on that when I was prepping for the game but he’s been that heavily involved a fantasy darling if you have him in your CFL fantasy with his start to this season he’ll slide over to the left to Jake May here two yards on that first down carry so second and eight throwing down May near side looking in the direction of Balon that’s a second time he’s targeted him today and that one Falls incomplete as well well and it’s it’s a match up the other way so when Calgary has the ball Dedrick Mills or BJ Emmons who’s who’s looked really good against the bomber middle linebacker who we all know very well Hall of Famer he’s going straight in Adam big hill he’ll walk into the Hall no doubt about it Grace set to kick it away for the route a guy that you know Zack kis can trust will be right where he needs to be and that was a dart right to MC Dy dempy was targeted 10 times last week caught eight of them for 9 four yards and you have to think that 10 target range is probably where he’s going to settle in for some of these guys out now dempski will slide behind his quarterback out to the slot on the right kis tucks it into the or or RPO type play from the quarterback and then they’ll press the line like not hit it hard not go right into it press it to see where the hole is going to open up and then go and then hit it and there we’ve seen demsky isolated there that he’s going to see him if he’s in the slot and watch him track him watch those eyes turn inside keep the body without pulling down a jersey or anything like that and get the left hand in there turn if you turn the other way you separate from the receiver he turned inside towards him and got the knockdown well played all of that battling it was the left your eyes are right looking at your read and getting your feet aligned to your target as soon as you can and that has helped he was worst accuracy last year tops as Glenn said already 80% Dy great info labo and what a resume of quarterbacks that Co Baldwin is work with it’s it’s really phenomenal he’s the he’s the CFL quarterback Whisperer and B Baldwin has coached Vernon Adams as coach mentioned but let’s take a look again at that list of quarterbacks that coach Baldwin has worked with it was Central Washington with Michael Riley and then and Eastern with the rest of the guys but you know you think of Bo’s career here in Calgary and now helping Jake May and he lights up when we talk about his quarterback coach what a burst on the ground first down on second and eight if you’re wondering how the Run game is going for Calgary dedri Mills does it [Applause] again well he has a bit of a different style I don’t see him pressing the line quite as the same way that Brady Ola does but once he gets to the line it’s very similar pound pound pound Pound move the sticks up to the Calgary 50 Mark and Michelle waiting for it Bagon to block for him flag on the play couple of them Mark Barnes was over there blocking for him as well it was right in that area at the point of attack where Mark Mark and Michelle was heading with the football and it may be the veteran Bagon second time passing plays in the first quarter again both these tail backs are featured tonight both teams want to get them going so the passing numbers and overall offensive numbers might be lower than normal but they want to play the physical game on the ground peretz setting up where would be a 47 y he does have the wind at his back which could Aid in this kick not that he needs any help from 47 s for decision hey surprised me yeah I mean I I don’t know if there was an like if you’re on defense for the bombers you’re saying hey ready for anything they’re running an offensive play just a yard fora on first down for second n c going to bring some pressure Z’s in trouble flag as he gets hammered down at the [Music] 10 holding Calgary number 55 that penalty is declined third down there’s Cameron judge he is the guy that’s going to cause the problems for Kars coming around the edge and then that pocket if the inside guys get a good push and just keep re reestablishing the line of scrimmage 100% healthy and then settling in and then taking it to the next level and he’s he’s very close fifth overall pick in 2023 second and eight bombers will bring Five May flush of the pocket first time tonight throws it down the field and that falls incomplete looking in the direction of Cam Eckles but never really had a crack at it yeah this is incomplete but this is what I think Jake mayor has improved more than anything in his game you heard coach on the sideline talk earlier about his better completion percentage down the field making those big plays moving and and throwing on the run when he gets off schedule I I think that has been his biggest improvement from last year to this year off schedule throwing different angles different arm angles or on the full run like we saw there that one wasn’t wasn’t complete but I think that’s where he’s made the biggest [Applause] improvements Grace hunts it away from just inside his own 50 that’ll hang up there and that one all the way into the End Zone it Smith grabs it and takes the knee Karis slides back out here as Winnipeg’s offense tries to get engaged here yeah and this is what we talk about being unusual and this one here you know you talk about this season but if you go back to the West final and the gr cup he didn’t have a a touchdown throw in either of those games either I mean this this is starting to get really weird and you know I mean they’ve got a lot of big play guys out of the lineup due to injury you know but every other team in the league will tell you hey welcome to the club that happens just and and he had that speed he had the speed to sort of take the top off defenses push defensive backs back and out of their back pedal you know and now they’re in there with a bunch of young guys losing shown is a big one Karis over the middle and that one is held on to wski who had seven catches last week second highest total of his career well and what they’ve done because of those injuries is they moved Drew waltari in into the slot back spot so so now they’re going to have to lean on number 82 and he’s going to have to make probably tonight three four maybe even five of these 2D catches the money catches for the first down move the chains on that tough area over the middle he could do it he’s great at it but he’s been a wide out to the wide side of the field for Winnipeg he’s inside for the most part now I mean right now he’s back out there but they’ll put him in at the slot here tonight in the Calgary 52 Ola once again tripped up boders and judge both in on the tackle as Calgary seems focused on not letting Brady get loose well they’re going to put Joshua cotney in there and you got Mike hway and you know that Brent Watson all week long you know has been saying listen they’re going to try and go back to what they have done good for the last four years which is run the ball go play aution to their big play guys down down the field but it all starts with Brady Olo so the 23 carries he he’s been worked into this offense since day one of this season however he hasn’t thrown a pass yet and you know if if I’m buck Pierce I’m adding that cuz he can throw and he’s a you know he’s a quarterback he can throw so add that so that it keeps that defense guessing a little bit [Applause] more bombers work from the Calgary 40 Ola again patiently trying to find some space got Long time CFL fan here.
But the game is so much better without the ads.
No incessant, three-and-out ads.
It speeds up the game SO much.
Soccer leagues go without ads.
The Premier League THRIVES without ads.
The CFL should look into it – at least somewhat.
Because people are getting shorter attention spans.
And the CFL with too many ads/three-and-outs – I cannot see surviving forever in this format.
Go to a CFL game and most of the fans are old.
When they die off – the CFL might go with them.
Something drastic has to be at least tried.
