SKILLS

Did YOU know the DIFFERENCE? It is a big one!

I like to refer to the backswing motion as a COIL instead of a TURN, and here is why. Coiling to me implies some sort of resistance and wind up motion that we can use to our advantage in the transition and downswing.

A turn, simply refers to opening or closing our body lines without any resistance being generated or a specific sequence to the turn.

Without coil or resistance, the golf swing will feel very unstable and power and compression are hard to generate, so, let’s get coiling everyone 💪🏻😎

Try it! Do you feel the tension in your backswing now? Let me know in the comments 👇🏻

hi everybody and welcome to my golf hallway I’m coach Caroline and today I want to talk to you about your left knee and I want to follow up on the real that I did last week which was a Hot Topic I mean my comment section was the place to be for a couple of days there so I figured I’d make a follow-up video in a long form to actually talk to you guys about it and discuss it because there was a lot of questions that came up there was some people that were wondering about it so I just want to make sure that we go through it step by step and I can explain why that video is actually so relevant to a lot of people swings more so than we think all right so the video that I’m referring to is called are you hitting your clubs all the same distance and the drill I was showing here in my hallway was essentially that I’m standing up next to this wall with my lead foot if you’re Lefty would obviously be the other foot and then as I’m turning back I want to feel like this knee starts pushing towards this wall in my back swing and a lot of people came after me in my comment section saying oh it really needs to come in and there should be some shift in the left knee and guys there definitely should be a little bit of movement in that front knee and there will be a little bit of movement but this is a drill right we’re here and we all know if we’ve played golf for a little bit of time or a long time that we have to exaggerate in the golf swing and drills by Nature do that right because as soon as we try to take it into the golf swing we’re going to go back to very closely to where we were and feeling real are not the same thing and they’re usually very far apart so I really like this because I want you to activate this muscle to actually push towards that wall and then as we’re rotating yes my knee is going to move a little bit away from the wall but it is never going to just collapse in because what the collapse does and that is really devastating to a lot of people’s golf swings the collapse of that left or lead knee makes that hip collapse and when the hip collapses we’re not coiled anymore we’re just turned you see how I’m facing like my body is fully facing this wall even my hips and my shoulders are fully facing this wall so happens now I have too much turn in my back swing and I’m likely overswinging and I’m also likely way too shallow in my shoulder plane so this is a steep shoulder plane or steeper this is more steep this is shallow a straight like parallel to the ground so as this breakdown happens a lot of people turn too shallow have too long of a swing and now the problem is that they’ve turned so much in the back swing they are going to not turn in the through swing so you’ve turned so far away from the Target that now turning back to the Target is going to be really hard so first you got to get the club from wherever it is likely over swung back up and around so you’re starting to cast the club you’re likely starting to throw it down and then your hands are coming down because you had to kind of throw it from this overturn and over swing into the down swing at the ball which we obviously don’t want to do and then what happens your body because your hands are now overtaking your body your body has to stop and stall and that’s when we see people a lot of amateures not having enough turn at impact so it kind of looks like they’re pretty much square at impact or just a little open where really you should already be turned towards the target with your hips and your shoulders should be just a little almost parallel if and a little open at impact depending on the player but where we should not be as closed at the target with our body or parallel with our hips and shoulders so too much back turn too much of the wrong turn back is going to limit your turn towards the Target and really we want to go towards the Target right we want to make sure that we coil in our back swing not turn so now if we’re feeling this if we’re feeling like we’re going to push our knee towards that left wall we’re going to be able to coil because it’s going to actually restrict our hip movement in a correct way so now my hips if you look at this I have almost a 45 degree turn that’s what we want right we want our shoulders 90 and we want our hips half of that we don’t want our hips 90 and our shoulders 90 or more so that is where this knee and the activation of physically pushing this way really helps so when we coiling correct ly we’re resisting correctly we have a good turn we’re not overturning it allows us to keep our shoulder plane steeper see how my shoulder plane isn’t like this now it’s actually turned down my left shoulder is under my chin and now we can actually start transitioning correctly and turning towards the target so the correct amount of back coil is going to allow us to actually turn much better towards the Target and our hands are going to be trailing our body in the correct way we’re not going to be stuck behind right same thing applies if you’re somebody who who actually is stuck behind and you feel like you’re stuck in your back swing and your down swing especially what happens is you don’t turn enough with your body that’s the Other Extreme right you’re if like if we’re just exaggerate here and we’re just not turning at all and then we start turning forward to the Target too soon because there really wasn’t any back Co any back turn or back coil then we’re stuck behind that’s why a really good coil having that feeling of my our left leg being very stable and coiling around it my left knee comes forward a little bit it feels like it’s pushing towards the Target and yes it’s going to move in slightly and then we can actually correctly fire towards the Target and that is why this left knee is so key for a lot of players because it actually allows you to create coil not turn in the back swing so I hope you guys enjoyed this little video if this is your first time on my Channel please like subscribe and leave me a comment below I always love to hear from my followers and I can’t wait to see you in my next hallway session w [Music]

  1. Nice video. Just a note…you might want to spell check 'Resistance' at the start. Not 'Resistance. 😊

  2. Coach, would it be possible to post a video about managing fatigue in the course? I am a 20 handicapper and just hit 84, but with great effort and ended up exhausted (I consider myself fit, I go consistently to the gym) Maybe through effective nutrition? (cereal bars, bananas etc) Thank you!

  3. anything on pre Golf warm up / compensatory moves. At the moment my ribs are hurting bc I did neglect that part and overtrained

  4. This is really interesting. I've always known my impact position was too square and tried multiple thing to improve it without much success. My left knee also collapses as you demonstrated, but I've never realised this could be the root cause of my poor impact position.

  5. This was so helpful! I have been struggling with consistency so much. If sucks because when I hit the ball well it seems like as if I have a natural ability, but when I don’t have the consistency I become frustrated. These drills have helped me fix that. Thank you!

  6. Very good instruction and most helpful on the relationship to the hips, the upper body and coiling. Makes sense thanks so much!

  7. I have seen a lot of your videos and I also have a hallway just like this… no clue why I never put 2 and 2 together and tried to use it for the drills you teach LOL.

  8. Thank you for your information and great tips I hit my long irons yesterday my three and my four quite well with your hallway approach Well explained if you can comprehend it Thank you

  9. Merci depuis la France ,je regarde vos vidéos vraiment très instructives et cette vidéo m'apporte une solution sur mon backswing ❤ et pour ne rien gacher vous êtes une très jolie femme parole de francais 😊

  10. you have the same stairs I do in my place! love your vids…are you single? I used to live on the other side of the coast, in Jupiter, FL. cheeers

  11. Excellent Coach. The last minute of instruction applied to me….not enough turn and then flip to catch up and big left miss after getting stuck. Tried a bigger turn at range today and shot dispersion so much better….thanks heaps from Perth Australia.🙏

  12. You basically loose the internal rotation at your right hip, you can see that by looking at you right knee cap.

  13. 🙏thank you an excellent description of what to. This totally reinforces what I am trying to achieve thank you

  14. Very good explanation, I really appreciate your YouTube shorts. They are very clear and concise please keep them coming. The hallway makes them simple to follow.

  15. Wow!! It was like you were watching a video of my golf swing! 😢 If you are doing this, this, this, and or this!! I will have you know I may be single handedly keeping Callaway’s golf ball business in the black!! I will, of course, have to try this in the hallway. When my wife’s not home!! Golf clubs are banned in the house. The chandelier really wasn’t my fault! Honest. It looked farther away.

  16. I wish I was half as flexible as she is. When I saw this short, I thought that that doesn’t make sense. Thanks for the clarification.

  17. When you get to the top of the back swing, uncoil starts with the hips then your shoulders and arms, watch Ben hogan.
