as a whole has been kind of on a heater couple of final fours we just saw the baseball team make it to Omaha added pressure to keep it rolling in the fall no no we’re excited for the other teams and excited for our program you know we we had great momentum coming out of the the final uh five games of our regular season and really proud of the men’s and women’s basketball teams and uh coach Avent and the baseball team they’ve had a great ride as well trying trying to build off of that that run late last season uh the transfer class has been one of the the topics of the off season um quarterback multiple wide receivers multiple running backs tight end multiple offensive linemen the offense seems to be pretty shaken up uh have have have they surprised you at all since they got on campus or are they exactly kind of you know what you ordered out of the portal yeah I think uh we’re definitely happy with uh the guys that have joined the team and was fun to be with them in the offseason and helped get better and see what they can do in the spring I think our spring game really showcased a lot of the offensive Playmakers uh with the first group anyway and defensively we’ve had added some pieces here in the second portal window to help that side of the ball so we’re excited about you know the young guys coming in and the older guys that have joined and now it’s just kind of getting them all the Jael Dave Dorne NC State head football coach joining us on the heaster Automotive Group hotline coach so much starts with the quarterback and and you’ve gotten pretty good at kind of uh you know working different guys in and molding the offense around it with with an off season with Grayson McCall kind of working with coach and I how do you expect the version of this year’s offense to look yeah I mean I think that’s what coach and I is known for you know he understands how to make things happen through the skill sets of his players and evolving the system each year um based on that what the quarterback’s good at what the o line can do in the Run game you know what is your skill and where where are The Playmakers and how do you feature them and get them the football and it’s no different this year Grayson a proven winner a three-time conference Player of the Year at his former school and a guy that comes in here with a big chip on his shoulder that um is a tremendous leader so we’re excited you know that we have Grayson McCall here and players around him that’ll help him that that chip on the shoulder is funny right I I I played at the FCS level so I know uh you know when you’re you’re looking at that level above right for him from group of five to to power of five you kind of hold the chip against like everyone at that level that didn’t recognize your your awesomeness right uh does that chip on the shoulder like is part of it trying to prove almost to to somebody like you who was in the area recruiting and and maybe let him slip through the fingers to a to a group of five school I think the whole ACCC you know in general he he’s a North Carolinian um from Charlotte and you know played in an option offense in high school and uh the guys at Coastal uh gave him a shot he took advantage of his opportunity and now he’s got a shot here to do the same thing and he definitely has something to prove um it’s really not to me it’s I think more of this is to himself but also the value you get out of doing something that people didn’t think you could do and that’s always been something I know as an individual and coaching guys on our team you know when you can go out and show that you are who you say you are it’s a big deal we’re talking with Dave Dorne the head coach of NC State football taking us through the offseason coach I I know you aren’t much for for outside noise but we’ve also seen you call out some haters in the past uh seems like the the expectations and the hype uh at least from where we sit are are pretty positive right the hype is kind of rising how do you deal with that side of things when maybe players are are reading headlines or social media or all the things that coaches don’t like to deal with are are getting in their ear uh you just try to stay in the moment you know I mean all those things are great um I know we’re still not being picked to win the league and we’ve got a lot to prove to show that we’re that team and uh take that next step and you know whether they’re talking good or bad about us isn’t going to equate to wins and losses it’s going to be about the process of preparation and lifting and running and practice and film study and nutrition and all the things are going into being good at what you do and for me building the chemistry of our staff and our team so that we’re a closer nit group of guys than people on the other sideline and that’s kind of where the focus has to be um any notoriety that we have I feel like we’ve earned um over time being a consistent you know um stable program that year in and year out competes well against everybody and has won a lot of games are are you aware and and or is it come across or has anyone brought up to you the salty Dave Persona that that some people have put on you yeah I hear about it from my family a lot yeah so I’ve heard that many times how do you react to that is it something you Embrace right because it’s it’s you know again from where I said it’s compliment right the salty Dave stuff comes out after you uh punch back against a hater or win a big game that people didn’t think you were going to win is it is it you know do you enjoy having a little salty Dave come come out of your personality every now and then no I think that’s just who I am you know and I’ve always been a guy that felt like he had to work his way up and prove you know what he could do um you know whether it’s playing FCS football and starting as a high school coach and working my way up you know the profession and having to build a name for myself and I don’t know I think I I carry that chip on my shoulder here I always have and you just got to know how to manage it but there’s no question that’s part of who I am you know and and like I said at the beginning when people come out and say things about our program my job is to defend it and the first way to do that is is winning you know and actions on the field and and uh I’m going to stand up for our program I mean that’s one of my jobs in my opinion here is to build our brand and it’s not fake I mean it’s people are going to talk certain way about our program about me then our job is to prove him wrong and be able to stand on it Dave Dorne NC State head football coach joining us here on the drive on the heaster Automotive Group hotline uh it’s transition to the defensive side of the ball for a second a guy that you could easily see having a building named after him one day replacing pton Wilson it’s not going to be easy is replacing the leadership something you talk about in the offseason and if so who do you see kind of filling that void yeah I think you know a lot of people ask that question and there isn’t ever one person that replaces a great player I think collectively the returning players have to be better than they were and that’s what their goal is in the off season is to be a better version of themselves and collectively you make up for uh a singular person and not that there won’t be outstanding player at linebacker there will be um but that has to be earned on the field and Sean Brown we’ve moved to that position from our safety room and and he’s had a really good offseason season but there’s a number of guys and you know Davin Van’s going to be a better D lineman than he was last year so is Brandon Cleveland travali price Aiden white at corner um there a number of guys returning in our defense that we expect better from and they do the same and collectively when they play at a higher level then it helps you know and so we’re going to ask a lot more from everybody and leadership’s a big part of every offseason you’re always trying to replace what you had the year before the vocal guys that to step out of your program and move on you have new opportunities for younger guys to take the Reigns and and finally here before we let you go and thank you for taking the time this is the question I’m going sneak it in at the end because I feel like coaches are exhausted of talking about it but it is such a big part of of college sports now uh you know long time ago college football became a an everyday of the Year thing right it’s there’s no longer a true off season but but how much of your off season now compared to even just the a year or two ago is spent fundraising and worrying about nil yeah that’s a big part of what we do now you know I think every head coach would tell you that uh the fundraising aspect has always been present when it came to you know getting facility dollars and things like that but now it’s transition to the player side and uh it’s easy to sit around and complain and you know I kind of choose not to um you got to find a way to be successful and compete and you know we’ve just rolled up our sleeves and gone out and did the best that we could we have a great Collective our athletic director does a really good job helping us uh generate revenue and every way he can so it’s just a collective effort um to be competitive in that space and obviously when you win games that only helps you know and so we’ll see where it goes we’re in a big evolving State uh as a college Department of Athletics across the country in every sport and it’s probably the biggest Evolution ever in college sports with what’s happening with the settlement and everything else so you just kind of got to roll with it and find your best way to be successful is there a like a consensus or or an understanding of like what the market is for a starting ACC linebacker or or anything like that or is it just kind of you’re you’re raising as much as you can and you hope it’s enough no I think over time we started to understand the value uh that exists and there’s always one-offs that are you know kind of unexplainable but for the most part you know you know generally what linemen D linemen receivers quarterbacks value is and and the N spaces and obviously some teams can outspend and so you’re not in the ballpark sometimes sometimes you are Dave we appreciate you for taking the time to to jump on the show with us and hopefully we’re able to catch up again later this offseason no thanks for having with Tim Donnelly 999 the fan thank you once again to the head coach of the NC State Wolfpack football team Dave Doran joining the show right before the break but at the moment we have to transition to some uh some news that broke earlier today from the Carolina Hurricanes after I think it ended up being 23 and a half days from the time Don wadell announced or it was announced that Don wadell was resigning from his position as general manager to today when it was announced that Eric tolsky could kick that inter room tag and officially be the permanent GM of the Carolina Hurricanes first of all you love to see someone that works hard be promoted from within that’s kind of in in general right somebody that puts in time at a job at an organization that wants what’s best for the organization to see them be rewarded from within you love it right you love it it’s the the Eric spoler thing right maybe something about the name Eric Eric spoler right he started as the video coordinator of the Miami Heat and then they show that one picture of him like with with the old real uh film and he’s standing there looking at it like VHS like hey and then they talk about him being the Miami head coach you love those stories Eric tski is a guy that’s been with the canes for a long time he’s been there for the ride always happy for that story to play out that way but then you have to remove yourself from the emotion of just being happy for a dude and you have to look at the actual hire and decide how you like it a lot of times in sports we go to the grading system right offse grades uh grading the trade and you look at traditional like School AB bcde e f or a b c DF we Skippy in that scenario for some reason um my grade is one that uh that some kids know all about and some would never hear it’s an incomplete right it’s well I can’t grade your project CU you only turned in one part of it right it was uh a written paper and a presentation you haven’t done your presentation yet you just turned in the written paper so I’m giving you an incomplete until you do the presentation this was a two-part assignment and only one is done Eric tulsky is the GM it’s a solid start it’s a solid start he’s a guy that has been proven to be in the decision-making room on some very good decisions look at the recent drafts by the Carolina Hurricanes they’re very good drafts look at some of the decision that were influenced by analytics that they’ve made recently been very good decisions Eric tolsky as GM is solid but you’ve been hearing me say this throughout the process they still need a hockey guy and I’m not saying Eric tski isn’t a hockey guy I’m using hockey guy as like a an archetype right maybe one step short of hockey Hardo right one step short of that you can flip the seats you can Shuffle the titles I still think it is important to at or near the top of your decision-making process in in the front office have both the the numbers and the gut feel right that’s an answer that nobody wants to hear right in baseball you hear this argument all the time is it the nerds with the numbers or is it the old school Scouts that can like hear the crack of a bat and know that it’s a good player like you need both it’s not either or right if Eric tski was the assistant GM as the numbers guy the person with the advanced degrees from Smart schools the person that that’s that’s very analytically inclined and Don wadell was in the GM job as the guy that has all the connections right the guy that has somebody that’s going to call him up and say you’re not going to believe what this Prospect in Russia is doing and then you take Don wadell away promote Eric tolsky to Don wardell’s seat I think you need to replace Eric tolsky with meaning the assistant GM the hockey guy or a consultant with the hockey guy right I don’t know like you can give them whatever title you want there just needs to be at this metaphorical nights of the Round Table that’s making all the decisions for the canes I think you need both so incomplete right let me see what you do with it right it’s it’s it’s you essentially uh essentially like it’s like a two for one trade almost right it’s all right you traded uh I’ll use basketball as an example you traded a shooting guard and a point guard for a shooting guard I might love the shooting guard before I say I love the trade I need to know who you’re putting in the point guard spot you took Eric tski out of the assistant GM spot to put him in the GM spot before I give you a full grade I need to know who’s the assistant GM or president of hockey oper vice president of hockey operations or uh consult consultant of hockey like give me whatever that title is could be Justin Williams by the way who’s a name that’s been thrown around he’s been involved with the franchise and obviously is a a guy who has you know his resume hanging in the rafters at PNC maybe it’s Justin Williams but I think you need that other thing and and then toski can run the show right toski can be the GM that asks the questions in the room that the Knights of the Round Table discuss or actually and I’ll even throw this out there as an example I haven’t seen it yet but maybe Eric tolsky does have hockey guy in his bag of tricks we just haven’t seen it I he hasn’t been asked to do it because Don wadell was doing it maybe he can maybe that was what the last 23 and a half days was maybe that was his audition period to prove he had that in his bag of tricks that would go against what they seem to want which is everybody playing their role at kind of a very equal uh decisionmaking room but maybe tolsky is like no I got the hockey I got the analytics I’m good I would actually kind of like that because that would seem to mean a GM is rising Above the Rest of the the influencers at the table but if the canes are seriously going to do this kind of unique hierarchy which we’ve heard discussed which is you know the GM doesn’t have final say the GM doesn’t have uh power of attorney for the franchise you have this group that handles it like a democracy all right let me see who else is in the group before I give my final grade you’re off to a solid start right the first part that you’ve turned in I like right tski brings something that is of value to a hockey team and now you’re promoting him to a a higher title probably comes with nice little cash boost good for him tulsk is living large like like all of that is fantastic but let me see what you do with the rest before I grade the entire decision if this were another team if this were pretty much any other team in the NHL you hire the GM I’m going to give you a grade because most of the other teams haven’t come out as publicly uh and and been known as teams that like to use a more democratic process on big decisions right usually there’s a GM that makes decisions then there’s people that have his ear right there’s people that that can influence him people that he trusts but it always comes back to him with the canes it does appear to be like the GM can be outvoted that’s what it appears to be so all right let me see who let me see who else has the votes who has the board seats sometimes you see that in uh like the high lever Shark Tank negotiations now I’ll give you your 600 grand for 12 and a half% but I want two seats on the on the board it’s like all right yeah okay I never really understand all of that let me see who else is on has a seat at the the the Round Table then we can discuss final grades but for right now incomplete which you may say is a cop the opening game of the Omaha uh college baseball World Series this year and we were riding High NC State was going to play on Saturday UNC just won uh the ACC had four of the eight teams in in the uh Omaha in Omaha and we were kind of feeling ourselves yeah yeah it’s kind of on to us did we jinx them I don’t believe in that that’s right you’re not superstitious I just think the teams that beat like because since since then all that’s happened is NC State’s been eliminated that happened yesterday during the show uh Virginia was eliminated that happened over the weekend um Florida State and UNCC are playing right now in a elimination game so one of them will be eliminated uh by the way North Carolina is losing that one 3-1 at the end of the fourth so the local team even in a game where it’s like all right the ACC can’t have two losers because they’re playing each other the team that we would rather win the local team is losing 3-1 I won’t I will step aside from saying it’s a superstitious thing and somehow we jinx them because I don’t want to disrespect the teams that won by saying you know those years and years of hard work that youve put in had nothing to do with the win it’s all because got too giddy on Friday okay that’s uh but we’ve we’ve been humbled quite a bit I’ll put it that way that’s that’s true we’ve been humbled quite a bit I mean the ACC is already down by the end of this game they’re going to be down from four teams to one and and they will be an embattled team at that so uh not great for everything we were excited about on Friday I will say what I said yesterday about UNCC is proving true it has to be Vance Honeycut and someone else right because if you look at the games right I talked about him walking it off who was that against Virginia on Friday y then in their loss to Tennessee they lost 6-1 Vance Honeycut hit a solo home run today they’re down 3-1 Vance honey cut with a hit and a run scored uh Casey cook with the the RBI and you’re just looking at it going somebody else has to be a run creator in a big moment somebody else has to be a run Creator the good news for North Carolina is uh it is 3-1 top of the fifth now uh uh the question today is simple it’s the loudest college football stadium what’s the loudest college football stadium now we’re going to answer this in kind of two ways right we’re going to nationally and then we’re going to locally do the triangle uh actually let’s do locally first because I think it’s a little quick and we can get out and people can get mad and then we can move on State’s the loudest UNCC next Duke third right agreed I I I don’t think there should be reason for anger there but there probably will be because that’s how fans operate uh but it’s Carter Finley then Keenan then Wallace Wade and and that’s not the say it’s easier team no impact on everything it’s just a little bit R more the the stadium shape matters people forget about that the the The Vibes matter it’s just overtime you expect that students Rush the field have you but then when I was able to make my way over to NC State two similar games that also at night was the game against Louisville the Friday night game now by the end of that game it was not very loud because State fans were disappointed game but then when also Miami came to town that was another night game and actually scratch that what am I doing it’s not the Miami game it was when North Carolina was at NC State at Carter Finley Stadium another another one that’s the loudest that I’ve heard Carter filing stadium in a while I I A lot of times when this conversation comes up like loudest college football stadium or something along those lines I oftentimes like to like I almost want to you know how uh I don’t know if they do this in the Olympics but in certain judge Sports they throw out the highest and the lowest score right like NC State when UNC comes to town is going to be really loud right like Ohio State when Michigan comes to town you can’t that’s that’s special but also like NC State when Western Carolina comes to town probably won’t be rocking either right it’s so I almost want like I want to get like the the meat right cut off the best cut off the worst because those are outliers look at the rest and that’s kind of what I judge and I just think if you catch like a generic ACC home game maybe not even a 12:00 or or a night game like a 3:30 opening kick and you’re just judging the the volume of the fans State’s going to be the most UNCC is going to be the next Duke’s going to be the the that is just size of Stadium right part of that is just how many people are there if it is sold out like those things matter I just think that’s the order what theyve not noticed about this past season at Carter fing stadium and hopefully some NC State fans listening have also noticed that if you’re familiar where the band sits this year if you look at the 50 yard line from the Press Box area so on NC State’s home side they’ve moved the band to the left side behind that field goal post so pretty much in front of PNC Arena it used to be in the student section yep and they moved them to fill the entire student section so NC State now from about let’s say the 25 yard line on the visitor side all the way around behind that Endzone is just nothing but students and when crunk a dead by Duke Deuce comes on I can’t play it on air because I can’t find a clean version of it but when those students are going yeah yeah yeah and I had a friend who’s a big Carolina fan that went to the game and was like I hate that song so much now because between that and just The Who old pack fans it’s he was like it was a it was burned into my head have have you I know you’re not a big movie reference guy but I am so I’m going to ask you have you seen a white man can’t jump yes and you know Gloria uh which is the the girlfriend she’s like a genius for Jeopardy yeah and you know food the the joke is foods that start with the letter Q she’s like unreal at foods that start with the letter Q what is quail what is aich and and just just rousse him out if you were ever on Jeopardy and I were sitting there watching and I had my fingers crossed for a category and I’m just going like if this pops up he’s going to nail it it would be in stadium music yeah I’m not sure there’s anybody that can like you like rattling off like Kane’s uh Face Off music or this song for this team in this home stadium I could be there I could enjoy it I could jump up and down to the music I could clap along when I leave a stadium that music leaves my my memory when you leave you’re like I’m going to make a playlist with that Stadium’s music well see when I was younger like I would always beg my mom if nothing else can we please get to the stadium on time to see the team enters that used to be my favorite part so last season Duke football Jungle by ambassadors that’s their walk out song North Carolina For Whom the Bell TOS by Metallica their walkup song they also have a really sick intro video by the way and then NC State last year swag surfing swag Surfin is a classic that’s that’s I feel like that is can’t be owned by anyone we like when I was in college we came out to swag surfing and uh there’s a bunch of bunch of power five schools that come out to swag surfing and I the the chiefs were losing the game and there’s a one of the miked up players start talking to the support staff going like somebody needs to play swag surfing during the next timeout and it’ll get us going like swag surfing is is a g like it’s just become a stadium Banger I’m I’m just convinced at this point timy you bring up a great point if I wasn’t working radio I’d probably working like a stadium Ops like playing the Oregon at a baseball stadium I don’t know about that I took piano I took piano lessons for a couple of years but I gave it up because I wasn’t that good but yeah I mean I love the game day atmosphere especially the team entrance that’s like what I look for at the beginning of each football season like what what is NC State what’s North Carolina what’s Dukes intro video going look like this year nationally which are the loudest college football stadiums we were talking about this in the bullpen I wanted to say you know what I’m going to go and off thewall okay just because I’ve been there so that’s why I’m G to take claim for it I’m gonna say South Carolina South Carolina here’s the hard part with this question I think you should have to to speak with any kind of definitive nature on this I think you should have been in most of the stadiums see that’s why I wanted to say South Carolina I know there’s a bunch of people in their cars going what what but I’ve never been to a game at the Rose Bowl I’ve never been to a game at the Horseshoe I’ve never been to a game at Penn State in Happy Valley i’ I’ve like you’re going to hear I’ve most of the SEC haven’t been to a game like those game like I feel like their fans take such pride and it is very much a no you come here and watch a game and then tell me that yeah so you know from people I’ve talked to Wisconsin gets loud uh when they do the whole jumparound thing gets kind of crazy uh Penn State obviously the the the ones with 100,000 plus nean Stadium Tennessee gets loud um a whole bunch of SEC schools get get pretty pretty jumping I’ve heard uh Florida State on like a Thursday night gets loud um I’ll talk about two that I’ve been in one will be a flex one will be just it’s it’s loud and I’ve been there and it’s cool uh I think Virginia Tech in a night game they play the ENT man they do the jumping thing uh I’ve talked to a lot of players in the ACC that talk about like you can’t really experience it until you’re there I’ve been lucky enough in my career to be on the field uh like kind of on the sidelines covering the game right uh for Notre Dame night game at Lane stadium and I can tell you you’re not hearing much you you want to do the look around where you’re just looking up at the stands it’s cool another one and this is underrated and it’s it’s a different noise I played at Navy Navy is a different noise it’s very much like like you know you you like it’s not this because I don’t I don’t want to disrespect the the midshipman like it’s Ur ra like you hear like just a Timber of like a bunch of midshipmen like in unison knowing what to say uh and it’s it’s loud as heck but it’s like very organized it’s you know how it’s just chaos when a stadium gets loud theirs feels like there it’s like a March coming at you yeah and it’s it’s very loud and it I have no reason to think any of the games we were there uh it was the loudest it’s been in Memorial Stadium because uh quite frankly they were beating us pretty bad I was to say was a situation for you where maybe it’s the first drive that you guys roll out into the field and the play clock’s winding down you don’t notice it till the last second so you’re just looking at the sideline calling the time out just different which is hard like hard to describe it’s just like you you get used to playing in front of loud stadiums and you’re you know you hear the but this it’s just sounds more like like if they wanted to they could Advance the entire Stadium against you and it’s just a little bit more intimidating uh Nebraska’s loud I’ve watched games in Nebraska Nebraska is very loud but it’s a polite loud because of Matt rule uh this was premat rule but uh he’ll take credit for it being loud though but it I mean it is loud there it’s it’s just organized so maybe it’s a copout but uh I don’t really have an answer for that cuz i’t been in enough stadiums one more just to go back to ACC ties and this one I found surprising our fearless leader Paul iander who I produce next up for every morning from 9:00 to 10 right here on the fan said that Georgia Tech has a very underrated I’ve heard that I’ve heard it’s underrated I thought you were gonna sayson stadium in Oregon because Paul that’s a no that’s a no Giver I mean have you seen the video Robo duck when it debuted and how crazy that place went it’s a classic yeah there there are some uh there are some some funny uh funny things that get gets the crowd going Jump Around in Wisconsin might be the best it’s such a goofy song but they go absolutely wild for it cocky the curtain the curtain falling down and debuting him to Space Odyssey it’s yeah it’s just I’m not gonna lie that was pretty electric it’s just a funny thing that gets everybody going uh the drive with Tim Donnelly 999 the fan um gez this this hour has flown by we have yet to talk about uh the Boston Celtics winning the NBA championship last night maybe that shows how exciting series was uh or lack thereof Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship deserving they were the best team in the league I don’t think there’s an asterisk on it I don’t think any of that is true but I do think they are an example of sticking with it and maybe doing exactly what the fan base is is the exact opposite of what the fan base is asking the Carolina Hurricanes to do Boston is the argument for letting the young guys fail in the postseason a bunch and trusting them to get over the hump and win it here I actually went and looked it up here are the finishes for the Celtics since they drafted Jason Tatum okay so since they drafted drafted Jason Tatum number three overall out of Duke these are the finishes in the PO the the postseason for the Celtics uh the Eastern Conference Finals the second round the Eastern Conference Finals the first round the finals the Eastern Conference Finals and then finally won the NBA Championship they kept for the most part the core right they kept Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown together Brad Stevens was around for it all in different different uh jobs but when everybody wanted him to break up Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown they stayed the course they were rewarded for it by being the best team in the NBA and winning an NBA championship now let’s visit the can’s finishes since hiring Rod bremore Eastern Conference Finals first round second round second round Eastern Conference Finals second round and that’s where we stand right there’s just as much postseason disappointment with the Celtics as there has been with the canes there’s just as much this young group’s not putting it together there’s the redundancy Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown are the same this core they don’t have the Killer Instinct there’s just as much but but they didn’t light it on fire and start over they didn’t say we’ll keep Jason Tatum everybody else has to go they didn’t say that and they re were rewarded with for that patience with a championship I’m not saying this is a recommendation okay because I do think this offseason deserves to be an offseason of change for the Carolina Hurricanes but I do think it’s important to hear occasionally that just because you’re not getting the perfect end result doesn’t mean everything you’ve been doing is wrong right just because the canes haven’t gotten over the hump doesn’t mean Sebastian AO and fetch and slaven are incapable of being the center core of a team that does win the Stanley Cup the question is can you do the rest Derek white was great can you find Derek white hockey version right value that plays their way into a much bigger role and is now respected in the entire league can you find Chris staps porzingis right a dented can special veteran who is seen as as maybe not as valuable as he once was in his career but can still bring value that you can get on the cheap can you pick the right Marcus Smart right because people forget Marcus Smart at one point in time was the part of that core right it was Jason Tatum Jaylen Brown Marcus Smart he was a defensive player of the year in the league and they moved on from him is that Martin NES or is that someone else that you have to move on from and and trade and and shake things up Jaylen Brown part of that core that they kept together uh reflected on the growth between himself and Jason Tatum we’ve been through a lot you know we’ve been playing together for seven years now we’ve been through a lot you know the losses the expectations the media you know have said all different types of things you know we can’t play together we were never going to win we hurt it all um you know but we just blocked it out and we just kept going uh I trusted him he trusted me um and we we did it together so um you know to get to this point you know and share that experience with JT is is just awesome I can’t you know what I mean it’s just amazing and it feels great how do you get to the point where that speech is from Andre Fetch nikov and he’s talking about him and a right you don’t have to blow up everything you have to make the right strategic moves that’s what Brad Stevens was able to do and that’s what Eric tolsky their brand new GM is going to be tasked with in this scenario and this is a really good scenario when Paul and I kind of talk about something similar this morning I was blown away one because we were air to tie pro sports teams and the Carolina H po proos pro Boston sports teams and the Carolina Hurricanes together but also who would would you label as a porzingis for the Carolina Hurricanes in this in this situation a guy that’s been through two different markets before getting to the championship franchise one um I mean that’s that’s the the whole thing right and maybe the porzingis comes back in the trade for Martin NES right because I believe the Marcus Smart deal yes is what brought christs porzingis in so like and by the way that wasn’t the main part of the Marcus Smart deal right that was to make the money match Marcus Smart brought back I think two first round draft picks and then also Chris DBS porzingis so you never know Martin NIS right you might trade him away and be excited with some young defenseman you’re bringing back but then to make the deal work it’s like and give us that guy that forward and that forward might end up being a veteran that steadies you know the the fourth line and makes a few big plays in the postseason and look at that it’s the difference right it it’s it’s finding value everywhere finding value everywhere Celtics did a great job of that around Tatum and brown kanes have the same task around there I would you know probably more than two guys just because the roster is bigger it’s uh around AO fetch Jarvis slaven maybe one or two other guys other than that right it’s when when I talk about the way our brain is wired a lot in sports and it’s wired by every experience you’ve had right and and what I mean by that is somebody xaviery gets size when you’re a quarterback just somewhere in your brain deep inside your subconscious it tells you all right let’s not put it way out in front of him right let’s not put this break this throw on off the break way out in front of him because guys that big can’t move that fast and and the reason why your brain tells you that is because you’ve been throwing to to wide receivers and tight ends your entire life and every single one of them that’s been that big that size that that uh shape in your peripheral vision hasn’t been able to move that fast so now Bryce is having to reprogram his brain rewire his brain a little bit this is why I was concerned with Xavier Le get not playing at a mandatory mini camp because of the hamstring injury I understood the logic right it’s June right games aren’t played until the fall relax you have whatever like a month until everyone has to return for even training camp so chill and I’m sitting there going well it’s not like you’re already a finished product right you don’t need shoulder pads and helmets and and leg pads and and full everything contact for Bryce young to get to know that Xavier Le gets different in and out of breaks yeah it feels like with Bryce young and Xavier Le get when you just look at his size and how tall he is Bryce is going to have to get comfortable with one stepping back far enough in the pocket where he can Arch the football up a little bit and draw Xavier Legette and a Defender to maybe a 50-50 ball where he’s forcing Legette to jump up and beat a back or somebody in the secondary to secure a catch it’s it’s you know I’m trying to think of like if you had a let me think of a good wide receiver example here um if you had a tank Dell okay who’s I don’t know what 510 165 lb if you had tank Dell you would be anticipating throwing it to him like he’s quick as a cat because he’s smaller lower to the ground right has that that control looks like he’s moving quick if you had Calvin Johnson right just I’m just talking like body types here right 65 235 you’re probably comfortable throwing him a deep ball like he’s a track star but if he has to run a a dig you’re probably going to give him a few extra beats just a few extra snaps of your fingers to get in and out of his break because he’s got to slow down 235 pounds moving at 4240 fast that’s the difference here so now Xavier leet is whatever he is 61 230 62 230 whatever he is everything in your brain tells you to give that extra beat that extra second for him to get in out of breakes and he’s just not doing it he’s getting out faster or at least that’s kind of what’s being hinted here by Bryce young to ESPN that’s how far away their chemistry is from being ready to roll right it’s not the nuances it’s not down to the itty bitty little tiny things that you talk about on a game week hey if the corner plays you this way I want you to stem it out a little bit meaning just lean a little bit away from your break snap it off they’re not there yet they’re like hey let’s run these routes on air and make sure I know how good you are and the same is true the other way obviously this isn’t a quote from Xavier Le get but every quarterback’s a little different right every quarterback uh the ball comes out a little bit different trajectory the spiral may be a little bit different whatever it is and it’s not like Lee get’s coming from uh you know a to have to discuss I think it’s smart to say no for any team in the ACC like if I’m a gambling person in this scenario I think it’s smart to say no for any team but I do like their chances so I’m gonna I’m gonna drop it with all of that talk just to say I still like their like if somebody has like a 33% chance of making the college football playoff that’s awesome right onethird of the time you’re going to be in the college football playoff with a chance to win a title that’s unbelievable but that still means there’s a 66.66% chance that you don’t make it so I I’m I’m I’m dropping it but want to achieve because you had those early missteps which weren’t really about how good you were they were about how new you were uh so so that’s that’s where all I think I’ve heard you say it before they have so many players that their problem is going to be how do they figure out how to get the ball to that many guys on offense could be and and the one thing about the transfer portal is you can completely remake your team right and they have a new quarterback they have two new running backs they have uh two new wide receivers plus three stud wide at least three stud wide receivers coming in as freshman they have a new tight end they have multiple new uh offensive linemen out of the portal that was all just out of the portal aside from those two recruits I mentioned three recruits I mentioned um most of the time people don’t transfer to be a project sometimes coming out of high school you understand I got to put on 35 pounds before they can really use me or I’m coming from a small high school and they see the potential but it’s going to take two or three years I’ll red shirt very rarely out of the transfer portal are you like yeah you know what I’m going to transfer and hopefully two years from now I can make an impact they’re all going to be expecting to make an impact and that’s a lot of mouse defeat so it’s going to like you know you got to know uh Shaq talks about it a lot with his point guards certain point guards knew hey we went up and down the field three times or up and down the court three times the big man hasn’t got a touch I don’t care what play the coach calls I’m throwing it in the post to the diesel because he needs it Grayson McCall is going to have to be a little bit of that where it’s like all right Casey concepion hasn’t gotten win an ACC Championship how do we do this if they’re two I’m counting losses to Tennessee and Clemson just because there’s their two early opponents early on but if they’re five and0 five games in with the Boston Celtics sticking with the NBA for just a little bit longer since early in the show we talked about it for as long as the series actually happened does Luca Don’s overall performance in the 2024 offseason clear regarding what areas of the roster he means to improve on he wants a top four right shot defenseman at the top of his wish list along with a top six right shot Winger so you which was it peshi or Shay that you that PES Brett peshi see here’s like peshi is very good I think he’s going to be very expensive I think he’s his game will age a little bit worse than Shay so so I would put a priority on Shay over peshi but I like them both uh obviously peshi you saw kind of what’s missing when he’s out of the lineup late in the season the Ducks are interested in in the the the top four defenseman I I could see that being the case uh just for this reason the Ducks what were they were they dead last in the Pacific no cuz San Jose is in the Pacific so they must have been second or third to to last in the Pacific they were close to the bottom um they probably are aware I used to call it uh this was involving the Washington football team uh the commanders organization I used to say you had to pay the Washington tax which is if you wanted a free agent to go to Washington you were going to have to pay like 110% of what anyone else was willing to pay just because people knew how dysfunctional how bad it was there um Anaheim probably is aware that there’s a little bit of attack if you want a player like peshi who this will be the last big big big contract he signs uh if if you want him to come to Town you’re probably going to pay a little bit more and if you’re peshy with this being your last big big big contract you might be interested in something like that so if they do if they’ve made it very vocal that they want a top defenseman that seems like some things are lining up right that seems like some some priorities may be aligning really what you have to ask yourself is how much pesh he wants to be on a winner and how much less he might be willing to take to do so because I could see Anheim being the highest bidder if they have the cap room I mean the Anaheim Ducks are going through so many changes right now not just the logo but just roster change just up and down and they also are probably aware as you mentioned you got to think about this the right side of the K’s Blue Line seems pretty stable right now with Bren Burns coming back you just resigned Jaylen Chatfield last week incoming rookie Scott mura set to fill out that position on the depth chart in Carolina for 2024-25 you’re left with this discussion of who are you GNA be who are you going to bring back between Brady Shay and Brett pestry if you can even bring both of them back I I think the answer to that is neither I think they’re and not because you don’t want them back I would love to have them both back but simply because uh right you resign Chatfield that kind of gives you a solid top four right with uh Burns and slaven up top and then orav and Chatfield in that second pairing then you have Morrow uh and and I have to imagine there’s a slightly cheaper veteran option you can use to fill out the third line especially knowing how many holes you might have at the the top six of your forwards right if Tavo tavine and and Jake gensel both don’t return I mean those spots aren’t going to be filled by Cheap individuals you’re going have to go find somebody to play there uh if you trade Martine NES obviously you might fill a hole with whatever you bring back in the trade but now you’re looking at you know three of your top six seven forwards that’s going to be priority number one for me so uh you know knowing you have your top four defenseman kind of already accounted for I think it’s hard to spend big money on that that third pairing so unfortunately you know Shay and peshi just kind of get priced out by how how well they played I almost wish you absolute dumpster fire with the Jacksonville Jaguars and then go were we were really struggling for Content talking about the biggest contract in the history of the most popular league in our country really scraping the bottom of the barrel not to say we don’t scrape the bottom of the barrel occasionally for Content because there are days where just there’s not much happening and we have to lean fall and and then eventually get over that hump with some well-placed tweaks uh Joe moula the head coach of Boston talked about how this title has been years in the making it feels good uh I think the most important thing something that’s really been really going through my mind throughout this process is you can’t lose sight of the people that came before us and um I want to make sure every person that’s worked for the Celtics that’s played for the Celtics that didn’t win uh knows that their work and what they’ve done hasn’t gone unnoticed or it doesn’t play a part in where we’re at today it saying because it’s it’s hard to understand uh but Bryce young city has to get used to Xavier Le get like the route Runner which is good news you know who you don’t have to get used to the wide receiver that runs routes like every other wide receiver you don’t have to get used to that guy you’re just like all right this is similar to everyone I threw to last year you know who else doesn’t have to get used to those wide receivers defensive backs right when the quarterback’s like gez I’ve never seen a guy that size that can get it out of breaks that quickly I have to you know teach my brain to throw it a little bit earlier to him that’s also a defensive back going geez I didn’t think he could get to that ball or I didn’t think he could break that quickly so I turned my hips thinking I could recover and then he snapped off the comeback and and he and he chopped the break a little bit more steep of an angle it’s good news that Bryce young is saying he has to get used to zette now he just has to get used to him now you have to actually you have to do it right you have to find a way to uh get used to it but once you do right you’ll throw to zavor Le get every day defensive backs will face him once a year twice a year so it’s a good news for the Panthers that he’s hard to get get used to but it feels like Xavier get has the potential to be wide receiver one just because as you mentioned his strength and his size and his height is so unique eventually eventually wide receiver one I I don’t like Deontay Johnson I think is number one for this year yeah but the plan when you draft someone in the first round is to eventually year two year three whenever it is turn those Reigns over right and and I expect that to happen as soon as he’s ready but don’t final fours we just saw the baseball team make it to Omaha added pressure to keep it rolling in the fall no no we’re excited for the other teams and excited for our program you know we we had great momentum coming out of the the final uh five games of our regular season and really proud of the men’s and women’s basketball teams and uh coach Avent and the baseball team they’ve had a great ride as well trying trying to build off of that that run late last season uh the transfer class has been one of the the topics of the off season um quarterback multiple wide receivers multiple running backs tight end multiple offensive linemen the offense seems to be pretty shaken up uh have have have they surprised you at all since they got on campus or are they exactly kind of you know what you ordered out of the portal yeah I think uh we’re definitely happy with uh the guys that have joined the team and was fun to be with them in the offseason and helped get better and see what they can do in the spring I think our spring game really showcased a lot of the offensive Playmakers uh with the first group anyway and defens we’ve added some pieces here in the second portal window to help that side of the ball so we’re excited about you know the young guys coming in and the older guys that have joined and now it’s just kinding of getting them all the Jael Dave Dorne NC State head football coach for you know he understands how to make things happen through the skill sets of his players and evolving the system each year um based on that what the quarterback’s good at what the oine can do in the Run game you know what is your skill and where where are The Playmakers and how do you feature them and get them the football and it’s no different this year Grayson a proven winner a three-time conference Player of the Year at his former school and gu that comes in here with a big chip on his shoulder that um is a tremendous leader so we’re excited you know that we have Grayson Mcall here and players around him that’ll help him that that chip on the shoulder is funny right I I I played at the FCS level so I know uh you know when you’re you’re looking at that level above right for him from group of five to to power five you kind of hold the chip against like everyone at that level that didn’t recognize your your awesomeness right uh does that chip on the shoulder like is part of it trying to prove almost to to somebody like you was in the area recruiting and and maybe let him slip through the fingers to a to a group of five school I think the whole ACC you know in general he he’s a North Carolinian um from Charlotte and you know played in an option offense in high school and uh the guys at Coastal uh gave him a shot he took advantage of his opportunity and now he’s got a shot here to do the same thing and he definitely has something to prove um it’s really not to me it’s I think more of this is to himself but but also the value you get out of doing something that people didn’t think he could do and that’s always been something uh I know as an individual and coaching guys on our team you know when you can go out and show that you are who you say you are it’s a big deal we’re talking with Dave Dorne the head coach of NC State football taking us through the off season coach I know you aren’t much for for outside noise but we’ve also seen you call out some haters in the past uh seems like the the expectations and the hype uh at least from where we sit are are pretty positive right the hype is kind of rising how do you deal with that side of things when maybe players are are reading headlines or social media or all the things that coaches don’t like to deal with are are getting in their ear uh you just try to stay in the moment you know I mean all those things are great
