TV nce Tuesday that goes back a long way normally you don’t hear that because it is seminal headline day normally but uh things change in the off season in the summertime and sometimes we have days where guys are vacation a little bit before we get ratcheted back up into the throws of football so today regular JCS we’re hoping to have a simal headlines for you later this week even if it’s not a live one the three of us will get together at some point at different locations and uh put together content for you via the YouTube feed and the podcast feed but for now it’s a regular JCS join as I am often joined uh by Tom Lang he’s there hello Tom how are you buddy there you hey hello hello I you know I’ve joined you for this show when you were in your 30s and now you’re 53 happy birthday buddy thank you thank you yeah I don’t know how it got to be that way I don’t know how I’ve arrived at a place where I can say that out loud uh but I appreci appreciate all the birthday wishes I saw right here in the chat when I sat down the heist and leak of Law Firm chat I might add I looked over and I was like look at all these birthday wishes that is awfully kind of you um and I figured guys that i’ had just taken few days off to go to New York and visit Tom and his lovely wife Jamie and took the family up there and did the city thing and did the Rockway thing did the Philadelphia thing cheese steak thing did all kinds of things and uh and that you know probably wouldn’t be cool to come back even if it is my birthday and take another day off so we’re here and actually I can’t think of anything I’d want to do more right now than to be here doing this job talking with you folks and uh being joined by you Tom I’m very very fortunate uh as uh you know birthdays will cause you to reflect they’ll uh maybe little quiet reflection on a day uh that it is your birthday and I was just thinking man I I get to still do this I get to you know be happy and and and talk about the the kinds of things that we talk about on a regular basis for a job this is cool and uh I’m excited I’m excited about that I’m excited about what this week looks like as we move towards the game on Friday now that the College World Series field is set NC State goes into Athens knocks off Georgia last night watch that game and uh now you have an all secac College World Series don’t you think it’s a sign of the times a representation of what’s happening in the sport you know all year long in college baseball if you looked at the rankings it was pretty much ACC SEC if you looked at the top 12 and some of them were interchangeable you know you’d have a bad week you’d fall to five and then you’d move back up to three and then fall fall to nine somebody would supplant you but generally speaking you were looking at five or six ACC teams and five or six SEC teams and they were all just taking turns kind of knocking each other off within their respective conferences which were the two best conferences for college baseball season it really wasn’t close really wasn’t close so it’s not a surprise that we see an all a College World Series comprised of four ACC teams and four SEC teams uh it is a surprise that Florida is there uh I think you’d say for everybody else it’s not all that surprising so uh should be a lot of fun I do think Forest state has an awesome opportunity here I I don’t think that they’re appreciably worse for example than the team they play this Friday uh against Tennessee uh I I I’ve seen enough fallibility in Tennessee so far to say if you play your best brand of baseball you’ll win the game against them and I think for Florida State we all know the deal uh the the bottom line is if you got you gotta win your starts from your big two uh you’ve got to find a way to make sure that uh Arnold that you get a win when Arnold starts and Carson dorsy has been really good for you uh I don’t know they have to win this start but it’d be pretty important and uh the only way you’re G to do that is don’t tax the arms in the sense that you provide extra outs for your opponent by not picking up the baseball hopefully they’ll be the team that they were through the course of a season and not the team that showed a little bit of nerves we talked about it yesterday Tom a little bit of nerves trying to close out Connecticut and that allowed for seven extra pitches here 12 extra pitches there can’t really do that when you get to this field where all the teams are Elite all the teams are capable of winning the whole thing all the teams if they play their best brand of baseball will be tough to knock off that includes you so let’s see how quickly Florida state gets comfortable uh you know you can always tell when a team is a little on edge and how quickly do they find that they’re just playing a game they’re just playing a game of baseball yeah it’s big game but how quickly can they allow themselves to relax and get into the flow of a game I always thought it was easier in football almost more than any other sport to find your comfort level no matter how big the game was because you got hit you got hit early baseball is a game of a lot of standing around a whole lot of nothing happens to you sometimes for long stretches and you can get into your head and you can really struggle with that right in football it is such a fast and violent game if you’re a starter on either side of the ball you’re G to take a hit within the first two plays of the game that wake you up to the idea that you’re playing the game if you’re sitting at second base and you’re a little nervous because you haven’t been as smooth in the field and a ball doesn’t get hit to you in the first inning for whatever reason the next thing you know you know you’ve got more time to think about that and let that marinate a little bit so I I think it’ll be key to see how quickly they can calm down and just play the game because if they do that if they play to the back of their baseball card collectively they’ve been very good defensively they’ve played smart they’ve had good at bats they’ve largely run the bases well they’ve done most things well and it stands the reason that they have because they’re in Omaha is one of the last eight teams standing yeah for me I’m going to be probably a lot like those players who were on the field at Charles Schwab and Omaha where if in the first inning you get a ground ball and whoever’s on the call says ground ball is short I’m gonna go and I’m gonna inhale and I’m gonna wait to see I’m gonna wait to see how On Target the throw is or oh rolled over to Second grounded to Second he’s gonna have to hurry and I’m going to wait and see to make sure that the throw Is On Target um I am very happy to see and we learned this last night when we were doing the smash that we will be playing in the night cap we will not be playing at the 1:00 C 2:00 Eastern Friday game that kicks off the College World Series CU I would have stunk we would had to do the thing again where you know we’re going to counter program so we can watch the game we got to watch the game but now to know for a fact and it makes sense obviously with Tennessee beating the number one overall seed and and our iconic brand as it is that we will be playing at 7 o’clock Eastern on Friday night and I saw in the heist and Leica chat there was a question from NL Dad saying has Jamie been announced well link Jared is speaking to the media tomorrow around 11:30 so I would imagine the announcement would come down at that point I got to think it’s going to be Jamie arold but I would think that the announcement would come down tomorrow morning 11:30 from the head man himself I just like that extra bit of time too you could tell last week that the time of the first pitch in the Super Regional impacted their decision on the order with which to go with dorsy and Arnold you get an extra five hours and that’s if there are no weather delays but you get an extra few hours there that that is valuable stuff I think that only cements the fact that you’re going to go with your number one guy you should have already but you’re going to go with him now I would imagine I I would think so I I would think so and I look forward to and I’ll answer something I saw in the heist and Leal Law Firm chat a question about concerns about Jamie Arnold I don’t have any I’ll get to those in a moment somebody else mentioned uh in a in a nice birthday wish Glenn I think said wasn’t it Dave Parker’s birthday yesterday no his birthday is June the 9th it was two days ago so soon enough uh is the cobras I don’t know if you saw that celebration when they honored him in Pittsburgh this year most recently Tom but that was uh devastating he’s been Afflicted with Parkinson’s and this this mighty man who in my youth uh was a towering figure of dominant baseball with a cannon for an arm uh and seemed Larger than Life uh you know we we we’ve all seen what Parkinson’s does to people and and he is uh yeah he is not that guy anymore and he was wheelchair bound I’m glad they were able to honor him and put him into the Pirates Hall of Fame and and all the things that they did that day while he was still with us too often we honored people after they’re dead and they have no idea which drives me nuts if you’re gonna put somebody into a Hall of Fame let try to do it while they’re alive let’s try to do it while they know they were inducted into the Hall of Fame that happened but it is weird from that 79 Pirates team that won the World Series since you asked as an aside um that you know I got to meet Willie starel before he passed but he was very ill at the time that I met him and now here’s Dave Parker stinks to see your Heroes kind of go out that way but it is always cool to uh reflect on that especially on my own birthday and I bring all this up not only to answer a question but I want to say thank you yesterday I was leaving the studios after doing the show and I said goodbye to John here the station manager and we chit CCH a little bit and I’m walking out of the studios we keep the studios locked by and large and and I’m getting ready to leave and turning the corner Tom and there is a mailman and uh and and he’s walking towards the hallway there and so I’m I said are you are you entering the station do you you know because he’s holding a package and uh and he said yeah yeah yeah and then I said oh I can take it in so I turn and I look and it’s addressed to me and I thought oh great somebody sent me Anthrax on my birthday no I didn’t think that but I looked at this and I looked at it and I thought oh okay well I’ll I’ll come inside and open this up and as it turns out as it turns turns out uh it was from a gentleman I won’t say your last name sir because I don’t know if you’d want me to reveal that uh but a but a man uh who lives in Groveland Florida uh by the name of George and uh and again I’d give you full credit but I don’t know if you want your last name out there so I’m not gonna do it I haven’t asked yet and George sent me this nice note I took a picture of it so I I could I could look at it today I’m not going to read the whole thing but in short he said I’m sending you this because I was I’ve been a longtime fan of the show and I was listening to you talk one day about the fact that years and years ago your mother threw away your baseball card collection which which she did indeed and I’ve lamented it on the show numerous times probably two many count right wait a minute what’s going on here and one of the things that was lost uh when when that happened was my top to bottom collection of the 1979 world champion Pittsburgh Pirates set of baseball cards tops set of baseball cards the guy sent it to me every one of them in pristine condition people can be good man blew me away and you know he wished me well and uh took the time to do that and to write the note and to say uh hope this finds you and your family well and uh I was able to track them all down and here they are so that is uh out of nowhere and it is awfully kind and it blew me away I could you know I’m a appreciated yeah so let’s stop focusing on me let’s turn it back over here to some Florida State baseball I’m in I don’t know where you stand I like to take gauges on fans and uh you and I have always checked each other’s pulse right to see where we’re at uh because over the years usually one of us kind of gets a good feel or sense for big moments big games what’s going to happen you know if if the other one’s not quite right the other one has a definitive feel it’s rare that both of us are kind of murky like I’m not real sure but I like to ask those in the chat as well hey man and ladies uh what do you think I I’m feeling good I feel really good now I’m sure when we’re all gathered around the big screen on Friday night and we go to watch first pitch because there is something of uh magnitude on the line something major is happening here you’re going to be nervous but that’s any big game I I’m nervous even when I’m really quietly confident about a football game or a basketball game or whatever it might be just because the consequences of losing are so great but I I feel I’m gonna repeat myself over and over again on this guys we’re playing with house money here this is not where you thought they would be before this season on the heels of last you did not think that this would be the year that link got it turned around in full and took this team to the College World Series and you must remind yourself of that it is a balancing act uh when it comes to fandom because on the one hand I have said this over the years many times too and I mean it well you made it you’re gonna play the game you might as well go win the whole damn thing right like once it happens and you’re there and the stakes are high go ahead go ahead and just keep on keep it on that’s a given we all want that um but you know it’s harder to remember and I’ll use a football analogy that if for some reason your team went four and eight in a given campaign and the next they were 12 and0 in the college football playoff you would have had to admit that that was not to be expected and that you’re playing with house money and this is all gravy and a loss will hurt but goodness gracious does it portend of great things to be so in that sense I’m already over the moon of the accomplishments by the accomplishments of Link staff players Etc I want to win it all I think they’re capable of win it all winning it all but I think we’re also playing with house money here yeah it’s it’s a weird spot to be in because typically when you have a comeback like this or or Resurgence like this you’ve already done enough and you are a decided Underdog at the next step you know that’s what follows it you’re not a decided Underdog here um there’s a Defiance to this group and there you know this is something that we’ve seen out of transitional rosters or let’s say the leaders of a transitional period in a program’s history Lamarcus Joiner was cut a little bit different by the time 2013 rolled around than his successors the next year in 2014 you know those kids that that rose up the ranks in 2014 they knew Florida State as excellent they won a national championship with Florida State largely if they were a starter very different than the campus that Lamarcus Joiner walked to and and arrived at when Jimbo Fischer was in his first year as Florida State’s head coach very different situation and so there was this anger that he played with he was not satisfied he was never satiated the same could be said for Telvin Smith the same could be said for Timmy Jernigan and some other players on that roster they were never satiated because they knew the bitter taste of sucking as a program it was awful and this baseball team has that a little bit of that to him the kids that have hung around like a Ferrer like James tibs jimie Arnold hadn’t seen a whole lot of success before this season and he wasn’t even the ace quote unquote before the season started there’s a Defiance to this group that I really really like and it fits the role that they’re about to play on Friday night very neatly Tennessee has a lot of Wake Forest in him or Wake Forest has a lot of tenness seeing them about you know the Showmanship it’s over the top it’s worse than what we do I just all of these things line up to where attitude wise the pressure is on Tennessee the pressure is not on Florida State the expectations on Tennessee the feel-good story is Florida State the Defiance I would think that the neutral observers in the crowd would be pulling for Florida State and not Tennessee because Florida State comes in as an underdog at least on the sheet of paper and especially if you’re in that half of the region and you’re buying tickets and you’re North Carolina or Virginia you’re rooting for Florida State in that situation not Tennessee so the crowd is going to be pulling for Florida State in a weird way I just love the way this atmosphere sets up for the nolles but I mean it’s only as good as the pitches you throw and whether or not you hang a a two1 slider when you’re trying to pitch backwards getting get ahead or even up the count we’ll see how it all shakes out but the mentality fits the assignment very nicely and you’ve got the talent to do it as well which is of course the biggest part of the equation I couldn’t have pictured a time where the way you describe fora States uh Moxy uh would be at at at a at a at a similar level to the outward behavior of the Tennessee players but it’s true they they will allow us to retort said scream uh and show uh show you up uh but but but there was a time not all that long ago where because I thought Florida state was the classier of the of the two in a given weekend series uh where teams would behave in a way that you and I certainly would think warranted a fast ball to the neck um if if this super professional baseball that’s what would have happened and I remember Georgia Tech would do that to us when we went on the road Clemson would do that to us when we went on the road and rarely did we show a similar fire in response and I I don’t know that I took it to to mean weakness but it felt that way it felt intimidating that one team was for lack of a better term showing their ass around every turn and cared not for the etiquette of the game while the other was as buttoned up as you would expect the team led by 11 to be which was you respect the game and I really resented that after a while after a while I would I would I would got to be of the mindset that while I respect that the Genesis of that I wanted us to feel free to be free and to tap into the competitive fire that is an intense matchup between two even competitors in a fiercely combative uh Arena and we we wouldn’t we wouldn’t do it now we do it after every pitch we do it after every run after every walk after every out recorded it happens to mirror the entirety of the sport that has gone this way so it’s less abrasive than it would have been if this is who we were 10 15 years ago now you’re just another kid playing college baseball who’s reacting like every other kid playing college baseball and so they are free to Be Free Buddy they won’t be intimidated is my point Tennessee was over the top with this stuff a couple years ago a few years ago and oh by the way it was link Jarrett that brought a Notre Dame team in there and showed no fear and beat them in Knoxville and eliminated them on their way to the College World Series now here’s link Jared again task with a similar responsibility the same responsibility only this time in Omaha and he lets his guys play foot loose and fancy free there’s no doubt about that it’s a discipline foot loose and fancy free but it’s an emotive foot loose and fancy free and Florida State will respond to every yell with a yell every hard slide with a hard slide every Star down with a star down and uh every emotional trip around the bases uh with a thunderous boom as they enter The Dugout there’s just a little bit of a difference though in this team I don’t know the be able to replicate it without you know going back down in the valley Clemson’s phrase or whatever their little hashtag was Clemson grit they’ve been good for a while man like you know this group this Florida State group I get there’s a lot of transfers that comprise the lineup that comprise the pitching staff and and the overall Clubhouse they there was a lot of turnover from year to year but there’s a lot of holdovers too including the ACC Player of the Year who has seen a lot of bad baseball who has been a part of teams that lost a bunch made a great point yesterday you know it’s one thing when there’s a 5 to 10 minute breakdown in right field after a game is over and you and you’re winning 40 games a season and Link has your attention if you’re losing 22 out of 25 and you’ve got to do that every day that gets old and you live through that and you feel the lows but then when you reach the other side man you are forged in Fire and that’s the thing I love is that these guys get to go try to pay it off in a way they uh the football team did not get a chance to this past December like you get you were you saw how bad it was and now you’ve gotten to this Pinnacle and you’re still an underdog but you are more than having a punch chance of Victory here it just this this fits very nicely but you still got to go pitch you still got to go hit you can’t boot a ball that’s a routine grounder second base you got to play composed it’s just it is within their power to do something without outside help and I think that’s the best part here it might say one versus eight in the program and in the scorecard man this is an even fight on Friday night 100% an even fight oh absolutely agree with that and I do think that they are it’s it’s a fine line they are unfazed by the mistakes that they do make there are consequences for those mistakes like the added pitches on the arm that I alluded to but they are unphased uh psychologically I haven’t seen yet an air beget an erir beget an err I I I’ve seen individual mistakes made sometimes in the same inning but it doesn’t carry over to their plate appearance you don’t all of the sudden see Lois have a terrible three pitch at bat because he booted one you know that’s not that’s not how these guys have been built and that again I think is a testament to each one of them but also the mindset that link has instilled play the game you know I it’s still one of my favorite things that Jimbo used to say all the time and he would preach to his teams and we’ve gone over every aspect of Bo Fisher’s coaching and what it was and what was good and bad and everything else in between but one of the things I always liked and it was spoken like a true competitor and you could tell he’s a former player and quarterback it’s almost like that of a a defensive back you you got to know that bad things are going to happen the other guys are on scholarship too play the next play stop worrying about whatever that was and play the next play I feel like this team does that all the time I mean they don’t get mired in that you you saw the mistake stock um uh stockpile last year and and time and again you’d be like oh man he’s in his he’s in his head this is a nightmare oh God here we go you don’t really see that with this group whether it’s a poorly executed pitch a uh a poor decision on the base pass something happens defensively where you don’t pick up the baseball doesn’t typically carry over to other aspects of the game and he has instilled in them that kind of toughness that gives a chance uh to match the intensity of the other side he’s uh you know I think with every one of the teams you’ll see a a firm belief NC State had no doubt in their mind last night they were gonna beat Georgia watch those abs watch the way that they reacted to one another even in some intense moments I mean things were starting to get away from them in the ninth and that kid ended up finding a resolve to to make some pitches to find the plate again yeah the two things so one thing about NC State I I was kind of not wanting them to make the field they’re they’re dangerous man that’s a are um not that I was rooting for the ACC over the SEC or anything like that but just man they were very impressive uh and and what they were able to do when they decided to rise to the occasion in the ACC slate that that is a a dangerous team that just made the field for us the only that seems to be contagious and go bad is Bullpen control that’s about the only thing but you know if you’re going to be playing ahead or you’re going to be playing from the winners bracket if you can succeed with your top end pitching you’re not going to run into those circumstances as often but if you do drop the game on Friday and you’ve got to find your way back to winning two out of three to advance to the final series you will have to overcome that demon 100% you’re GNA have to overcome that particular issue but by and large if you’re not talking about that phase of the club they’re extremely tough it’s it’s just that’s the gratifying thing here is they’re mentally tough they’ve got the bravado but then also this past weekend in the Super Regional the first game was a cakewalk the second game was very challenging in so many different ways and they were able to overcome it in so many different ways and your best player got to see the ball go over the wall not once but three times and look out because he was a missing piece to what had been a dominant postseason but he had not been himself and now he’s feeling good about himself heading to that ballpark yeah man okay they’re in a good spot right now they got to be feeling great about themselves oh yeah they have to be really excited about the opportunity I mean this is a chance when you’re really good and you know you’re good and you’ve got a lot of confidence in what you do you can’t wait for the opportunity to express it to go out there and do what you do uh to go out there and and and dominate in some cases or certainly put your best foot forward that that’s why mean practice sucks almost in every sport practice sucks I mean the lone exception is I like to practice golf I like to hit golf balls that doesn’t suck I like to chip I like to putt I like to hit the range doesn’t suck every other sport when you’re practicing pretty much sucks so you live for the moment to play the game to be able to execute the way you know you can and they certainly know they can our friends that tried and true are prepared to help you start saving money and making money that’s a good one uh as a business owner you get to choose between one of three offers they got going dude to realize their potential this season would you choose Marvin Jones Jr hem Williams or somebody else happy Birthday Jeff thank you Optimus clim I appreciate the question and the birthday wishes um actually it’s a really good question because I’m not real sure what I’m gonna say uh normally I’m a quick to answer guy uh you know I’m gonna tell you hi Keem I want I Keem to be the NFL the future NFL wide receiver I believe him to be that his physical prow suggests he should be his fleeting moments in which you recognize the whole package of what’s possible for him uh as a wide receiver because in various ways we’ve seen it he can block and he’s taken to blocking and he’s physical enough he’s a big big big wide receiver so he likes to block even and that is what uh allowed the coaching staff to begin to trust him more prior to the injury I think he was on the verge of taking off we saw the really Elite athleticism I’m not sure we realized he had I understand he was a five-star recruit but some of what we saw with him when he first got here we thought was the byproduct of just being bigger than everybody else right when you first saw him you thought well who the hell in high school’s covering that guy he’s a monster and he’s just gonna out jump or push off or do whatever he has to do utilize his body to to win one-on-one battles but then you saw him run away from people a few times in particular the one touchdown run on the on the quick on the in the quick game and so it’s all there uh I I if he’s if he becomes if he’s fully realized if all the potential happens well then you are set at wide receiver because I think You’ then have two legitimate big-time College WI wide receivers and everybody else can fill in the various roles some of those are gimmicky roles some of those are screens some of those are any number of things then you’re gonna be all right so I I’ll say h Keem Williams do you do you share that or do you say Marvin Jones Jr I know we’re excited about his potential too but I feel like you’ve got the potential for one really really good defensive end that is cemented yeah he’s not going anywhere he’s already going to be good and you’ve got at least average on the other side so you’ve probably got enough there to do well defensively whether he realizes his full potential or not yeah there are some other candidates I think I land on hem um but the other candidates are Marvin Jones Shore Daryl Jackson what if Daryl Jackson lived up to every bit of his potential this season Ian that would be so destructive for opposing offensive lines and it would force uh offensive lines and schemes to allow either a Josh farmer or Patrick pyton or Marvin Jones Jr or c loha any one of those players to be in a one-on-one situation so if Daryl Jackson lived up to every bit of his potential you’re talking about a game record and I think that takes points off the board immediately but the problem is on on offense you’re scarce a wide receiver so I I do believe that is where hem is probably the right answer also one other guy I would consider Lucas Simmons what if Lucas Simmons lived up to every bit of his potential this season that would drastically change the way you Shuffle the offensive line I think it would drastically change the things you could do on offense now that’s a wild card he’s still in development and he should be he’s a younger player but if you’re talking about what is the the height of what is the highest level of potential of anybody on the roster relative to their position Lucas Simmons is in that conversation about being a lockdown tackle again though I will swing back and say that because you’re light at wide receiver if H Keen became that dude that would change your offense it would become so much more Dynamic immediately and you have Solutions at those other positions that you don’t at wide receiver and I think he might I don’t think I I don’t think I’m as down on hem as our fan base is and when I say that I don’t think that they hate him and I don’t think they think he stinks I think they were disappointed by the numbers or the inconsistencies in the spring that were reported and those were not uh reported erroneously those were not things that didn’t happen that did happen but I think the the the cause of those inconsistencies are not replicated week to week in the college football season so I believe he has a chance to have and find the kind of cons consistency and confidence he needs to to become fully realized sooner than than a lot of people based on the the spring uh I wouldn’t be shocked at all where I would be somewhat surprised and you picked a good one in Lucas Simmons you went off the the grid there you know I’m a big Lucas Simmons guy and I’ve talked about how I don’t see why he can’t play sooner rather than later because he had that big uh base and and you know how I feel about the big asses necessary to play in the trenches and he has great feet he has the the the the base and the trunk necessary just didn’t have upper body size to go along with the 683 plus um you know overall makeup 300 plus makeup I the reason he’s still a work in progress is because he missed an entire season he was on the roster but he couldn’t play and had that not happened we would be talking about him as in my mind a guaranteed starter he is a prototypical left tackle in the National Football League he has the length he’s got the foot uh footwork he’s got the ability to bend at that SI let’s just hope he gets there let’s just hope it happens to where this off season has been very fruitful and he’s been able to put in the work because I agree with you at that point man you have him and Darius Washington as your tackles you brought in two monsters in the interior that are extremely athletic for their size and they’re going to run the ball by punishing people with those two and then you have a technically sound very smart Center who’s a little under sized but makes up for it with the technical skill set that I alluded to so all the strength and you’re running the football which is what you know Mike wants to do you then utilize the play action that we’ve talked about time and again with the speed on the outside and the big arm of the quarterback you brought in it would have been worth noting that if we were going to debate this a little bit with some of the names that were mentioned in the question that perhaps we should just say DJ because if he reaches his full potential then the most important position on the field is a player having uh incredible tools and they’re becoming fully realized which is for him an NFL arm and body type which would then change who you are it would and this is gonna sound like a slight and I don’t mean it I just think he’s closer to what his potential is already he’s got tools but I mean the consistency has not shown at any point in his collegiate career that’s true you can now if it happens here like I’ve said before then Mike norell and Tony tokars will be known as quarterback Whisperers in they’ll be household quarterback Whisperers in the game of football Tony Tok car’s name would be the one that benefits more because most people know Mike norell at this point if Alabama Call’s coming your name is out there and people recognize how what a badass you are but if tokars pulls this one off and dju looks like not a different player but a step up from what he’s been at Clemson and what he’s been at Oregon State under a head coach Minds you Jonathan Smith who is well loved if this guy is another success story to go along with a Jordan Travis success story Norvell gets credit as well but to car’s star would be on the rise in a whole new way and it might happen I don’t put it past him what what Jordan Travis did to improve over a fewe span was remarkable maybe they got some Secret Sauce here maybe it’s it’s a little bit of the player and a little bit of the coach well I think Tony’s an up and cominging star I already believe that I think Mike Rell is a great offensive mind who puts his quarterbacks in a good position to succeed time and time again wouldn’t be surprising to see a kid who’s played that much football take a big step forward uh you’re right his skill set may be limited to the point where he’s always going to be somewhat inaccurate I mean that’s that’s the criticism let’s just say it he’s somewhat inaccurate um and and that’s you know that’s fine to say but if you see that tip up tick upwards a couple of completion percentage points into the realm of say 58 59 anywhere close to 60% coupled with the big play ability down the field uh and the willingness to really take chances down the field you know I love offenses that do that I loved that about jamus Winston it was that jamus was GNA challenge you uh you had to guard every inch of the field because he was going to take chances down the field and Trust his guys trust his guys now there is no Kelvin Benjamin here uh and it’s easy to trust some you know Superstars Rashad green was the most fluid route Runner we had seen in eons and what he did after the catch uh was plus plus and then you had a monster that you can’t replicate I mean who the hell is out here looking like Kelvin Benjamin in college football so became a little bit easier to challenge you down the field it’s just remarkable though his his arm strength and we all know that and we we’ve documented that but it does change things it’s it’s almost like little league or when you were in uh travel ball for those of you that play travel ball you know at the end of the game a key situation there’s one out runner on third or maybe nobody out and what is the Outfield positioning in that in that situation only go as far back as you can make a throw to home plate in a reasonable fashion DJ would be standing at the wall in in that examp sure yeah speaking of the A4 mentioned Dave Parker earlier in the show or Clemente since it’s Pittsburgh Pirates day for you the famous clip of him throwing it from the wall to home plate on the on the Fly what he can do to unlock different parts of the field he could be on the at the numbers on the right side of the field and completed 50 yards on the other number on a rope it’s just what you can do with either misdirection plays or deep shots he does unlock different parts of the real estate of football my question is when we get to say a five-game sample size and we look at pro football Focus for the spray chart and you’re just that’s what it’s good for I think is is documenting that stuff rather than grading give me the empirical evidence when you take a look at DJ’s spray chart five games into the season what does it look like the Tic Tac Toe board where are we throwing the ball is it all at the line of scrimmage and deep is he working the middle of the field what does Mike Norvell what does Tony tokars think it could be his strength and how does it fit into the offense we know there’s going to be deep shots but what’s the general picture going to look like when it’s all said and done fall Camp can’t get here fast enough my my draw your attention Point your attention your your focus if you will uh to the 12 team college football playoff time to retrain our brains for a new college football playoff on three piece that Andy Staples did and oh by the way I reached out to Andy and we’re going to going to get together Tom on Thursday all right he did a top 12 posts spring ranking and projected uh his his playoff grid if you will and how the tournament would be seated and all of those things um and first round on campus games which would have Boise at Alabama Tennessee at Oregon ol Miss at Texas Notre Dame at Michigan Etc uh and he is bullish make a long story short he is bullish our beloved nolles here he’s got Florida State uh I believe when this all played out if I saw the graphic does he have them in the final four yeah he has them earning a buy and uh he has them now I don’t know if how it plays out if he if he filled out his bracket but the thing that was going on social media was he had Florida state is the three seed they would be the three seed in this year’s college football playoffs so that first weekend of December the 20th 21st when you’re watching games and stadiums we would be doing just that watching the games in the stadiums waiting to see who our opponent would be in the next round which would be the round of eight of the college football playoffs so um it’s just weird to see that setup it is it is weird to see that bracket that looks like something that one would make up and and a fictional format on NCAA football not the reality that we’re about to live but it is the reality that we’re about to live and if Florida state was the three seed I you know you have expectations when you get there but I would feel the same way about that that I would the way that we get to the College World Series this year like if this group was the number three overall seed in college football holy cow well this is interesting first of all happy birthday Patrick secondly uh again I want to say thank you to everybody who’s had nothing but kind things to say in this chat and I can’t get to everybody and I feel bad about that I don’t want you to think I’m ignoring you uh third go back to this here real quick I I know your intent is not to slight what you think this four to State team will be or could be but it almost sounds that way when you say you’d be like stunned if they were the three seat yeah yeah and that’s with even us doing W’s and L’s and we had one loss pick between the two of us um because of the way the schedule laid out now we I think we both anticipated that they would do more in the portal uh to address immediate needs they’re still good don’t get me wrong this is a good football team M but if the committee is forced to put them in a number three position what wild accomplishments would Florida State it wouldn’t be just about the WIS because the wins Aren’t Enough what we know is that the wins are not enough you’ve got to do it in resounding fashion if you’re Florida State if you’re Florida State you don’t have to if you’re Alabama you can barely beat USF and win on a miracle Hail Mary against Auburn and get in but if you’re Florida State you’re right you can’t afford to look shabby not even for a week you put us in the number three seed that means to me that we would have to have gone 13-0 and multiple SEC teams would have two to three losses I because they have one loss they’re putting them over us so we but with that schedule with those some of those Marquee matchups scattered about where they are and in Andy’s playoff bracket uh he has Notre Dame making the playoff so you would have a lot of High Caliber moments High Caliber wins and you would have to have done so in resounding fashion in order to be in that position so yeah man that would be a wonderful wonderful uh season for us to watch if that’s how it played out I you know I’ll say this all you know snide comments aside I just think for State’s gonna be good and I thought that at the end of the year said to everybody who would hear me that I thought their offense would be better than it was this past year gave the reasons that I thought that and I think that this defense will be good enough pretty damn solid in fact because it’s deeper on the back end uh I don’t know man I don’t when I know in a vacuum when I go through the schedule I feel really bullish on Florida State cumul cumulatively it is a little bit more difficult right I mean I think you look at the schedule and you realize o this is a little bit more Pitfall is there are moments where you could see that the games add up to a problem this particular week or something like that that you know but uh if if they are able like I like them to I know that it’s trendy right now when they’re projecting W’s and L’s and all of the Season previews that we’ve seen like Phil steel and others it’s trendy to pick Florida State to go on the road and lose to Notre Dame like you see that a lot like a lot of people think that’s the game Florida State’s going to lose I do not believe that to be true I think Florida state is going to go and beat Notre Dame uh now I oddly I am slightly more concerned currently with the with the Miami game uh I I think Miami is going to be good I think they’re finally going to get some pretty good quarterback play and I think that the defensive line for Miami is is tough and you go on the road there it is the lone time that they’ll have a decent environment it’s always the case when we come to town uh we’re the rock stars and so they come out to see us and and that’s great that rivalry is real that’s a game that concerns me a little bit Clemson concerns me a little bit just because every year their defense is very very good and last year that defense really kind of dominated the day I mean let’s just all be honest cson should have won the game now this game this year is here but I don’t know the kind of home field advantage we’re going to be looking at with all the construction and all the stuff that we continue to talk about kind of the bastardization of the HomeField advantage that would be it will not be in place um you look at the schedule I think the road uh is it no we’re yeah we’re on the road against SMU so the road SMU game concerns me a little bit other than that I I I have considerably less concern although uh I think there are a lot of people out there that are worried about memphis’s offense which is a very very good offense so gonna have to play well you’re gonna have to play well this is um it’s a tough debate because when the when the schedule first comes out you take a look at those breaks that you get and I just love the this the scattered by weeks they they land in very very good places the only gripe that you could have would be North Carolina Miami North Carolina Notre Damon sequence like you you got three by weeks this year and to have one on November 16th kind of stings but on if you’re just looking at this as a 12 game canvas this is is not you get the beautiful leadup to Florida the Clemson leadup is going to be tough SMU on the road followed by Clemson that’s a tough one two punch but you’ve got Cal before it you got time there in the lead up to Miami you’re playing on a Friday night at Duke and that’s not last year’s Duke their coach is gone the quarterback’s gone he’s at Notre Dame now the coach is at Texas A&M so you have the extra day to prepare for Miami it all and North Carolina certainly isn’t going to be what it was with a top five draft pick so this is this is laid out very nicely it’s just I I do wonder about that first five that first half of the schedule because Memphis could be tough SMU I think is going to be difficult then Clemson at home we don’t talk about that game very often but Clemson at home that that’s not gonna be a cakewalk oh God no I’ve mentioned Clemson before I think that there’s still residual Talent on that defense that is problematic uh we Clemson will play hard they’ll play Angry they’ll play good defense if you’re not playing well again I don’t know how much of a HomeField advantage that’s going to be next year for Florida State yeah that could be a problem there are more losable games this year than than we’ve had in recent memory like you could lose on the road to Notre Dame you could lose on the road to Miami you could lose at home to Clemson absolutely you could lose on the road to SMU hell you could lose the opener against Georgia Tech who I think is GNA be a lot better this year in totality on defense their offense is already good Hayes King and that offense are they can move the football and you know he’s a mobile quarterback so you talk about this Georgia Tech Team now Florida State should win the game for State’s rightfully favored to win the game and I think they will win the game but the the point we make when we talk about projecting is how many teams on your schedule can beat you another way to look at it is what is the percentage chance that you would put on each game that you’re going to win it and so just because you think it’s 703 Florida State that’s still a 30% chance you lose to George Tech whereas there have been a lot of times we look at the schedule and you go oh man this is 9010 you know this is this is yes there’s a crazy scenario by which they lose the game but you know 90% likely they won’t I think there are many more games this year where that percentage loss chance creeps towards 30% more than you’d like okay so call it in doubt you call the uh the result is in is in legitimate doubt so you think Georgia Tech would be one of those well Optimus climb just did something that I agree with label them as losable games realistically losable games like I don’t think it’s realistic to say that you could lose to Charleston Southern for example it’s not realistic so you don’t do that what’s a losable now again some people are literalist in the sense that they look at odds and say well if there’s even 1% chance you could lose it’s a losable game you you know don’t play dumb you know what we’re saying here okay Georgia Tech is a losable game SMU is a losable game Clemson is a losable game Miami is a losable game North Carolina is a losable game Notre Dame is a losable game oddly Florida is a losable game uh that’s a lot of losable games man would you throw any other game in there BC or Memphis uh I’d throw Memphis in there and I’d take North Carolina out and I am wavering on Georgia Tech first game you think that’s a losable game I feel pretty good about that game I like us to win the game I’m not picking us to lose the game I’ll probably pick us to cover the game but I think it’s a losable game they’re well coached they’re hungry they made strong additions along the defensive line which was their greatest weakness last year you bring in a Miami kid you bring in a Southern cow kid I that’ll be interesting it well it’s more interesting than it was when they scheduled it when they first scheduled it you’re like well they going to put it in ink and and I’ll grant you that I just I feel I feel good about the first two I love the buy before Memphis I think like the Memphis game if you’re looking at which one is positioned beautifully on the schedule to be ready for you’ve got a buy before Memphis and you’re playing Cal after them and it’s at noon in Tallahassee on September the 14th it’s going to roast I the circumstances by which you play that football game are outstanding versus the circumstances that you would play say Clemson at home where you have SMU on the road they’re going to force you to come up to an adrenaline emotion level that is higher than the two helmets would suggest that there’s going to be they’re going to force you to to go to that place so you’re G to come home tired and you’re gonna have to ratchet it back up for Clemson then the game the other game that has a a rough circumstance would be Notre Dame on the road just because of the SE sequence of rivalry game on the road trap game at home against North Carolina if you’re not careful and then obviously you got to go back on the road and play a Notre Dame team that does not have an automatic path to the college football playoff in this iteration of of the formula so that game for Notre Dame is going to be far more consequential Florida state has two ways to get to the playoff Notre Dame has but one way to get to the playoff so that game is going to be tremendously important to Notre Dame and that atmosphere will will show I would think as long as they don’t their toes beforehand so all in all it’s laid out manageably but it’s not going to be a cakewalk I thought that they were going to do more in the portal to fortify to be an 11- one 12-0 type team they got some holes that they’re going to have to address develop through and and get better from this will be fun it a good test for Mike and his staff I continue to think that uh the the confidence we have in those guys are warranted I’m really ready for Camp to to get underway just because there’s still there’s still battles that are at hand Riley real quick the Thomas Gore kid from Georgia State in Miami the Jordan vanderberg kid from Penn State the USC Auburn transfer romelo height all kids that Georgia Tech added uh I’m not saying that Georgia Tech brought in uh the creme deeme of defensive lineman that they did make additions to help bolster the area of weakness from a year ago I think it’s a losable game I think they’re better on defense than they were a year ago they brought a linebacker in as well they’re better on defense this year than they were were last year your retort could be couldn’t be worse fair enough but uh I I do think game ones are also weird game ones overseas are somewhat unpredictable I suppose right just by you’re playing on a weird surface Tom seems to me every time I watch the NFL or college football go overseas everybody falls on their face repeatedly it’s annoying as hell that the types of grass are so different I I would think I would think it’s a between the tackles we’re going to test and see how our between the tackles running game is over in Ireland you that’s you govern that you call that game I think because of the surface I think you’re right you call that game a little bit more conservatively and if you can handle things more vanilla then you handle things more vanilla you just control the clock I think we’re going to be able to win both lines of scrimmage and therefore that’s why I think it could be a fun it could be a fun day like a rocking chair kind of second half fla State should and I think will beat Georgia Tech I’m making that abundantly clear the question was is it a losable game I think it is a Lo game that’s all we’re saying I like for state to win and win big time I’m picking him to cover as of right now I’ll just tell you that I hear you loud and I’m looking forward to going down there again and feeling that heat buddy um you know because it’s obviously if you take care of business it’s a it’s all the more devastating for a program that annually believes it’s back but I think probably more so this year than at any point in recent memory I they got because of the cam Ward acquisition well this time it feels like the old Orange Bowl oh man look at this you can feel the energy here in Miami I was looking at both Clemson’s and Miami schedules I knew Miami’s was relatively easy in conference just talking about the pathway to a conference Championship game playing in Charlotte which Miami doesn’t do very often but you their biggest road blocks are potentially outside of us of course um hosting Virginia Tech who had a nice finish to their season had some good momentum towards the end of last year and then a road trip to Louisville that’s other than that they’ve got a pretty manageable ACC schedule I know Mario will find a way to make some of those interesting but by and large if you were drawing up your what opponents you face they’re in a pretty good spot Clemson is the same they host NC State for their ACC opener after that outside of us it’s Stanford wake Virginia hosting Louisville at Virginia Tech at pit that’s it so when we play those games head-to-head it’s not breaking news you have to go at least one in one in those games if you want to go to Charlotte you’re not I don’t think you’re going to get any layup birth any layup birth opportunities into the ACC Championship because the two other nine and a half win total teams in Vegas have a pretty nice ACC slate Florida State uh if they are to Tom go 11 and one say 10 and two and still make the college football playoff given that we believe the nolles will have double digits drafted yet again might we be talking then if not already in the same way that I was talking yesterday about the inevitability of what link Jarrett has built here at Florida State at that point you will have cemented not just the status of being back that’s a given you had an undefeated season you won the conference Championship should have been a playoff team but you will have then posted backto backto back double digigit win Seasons Norvell has already reshaped The Narrative around who he is and the way he’s viewed obviously it didn’t hurt his reputation to not only lead us to an undefeated season but what he’s done in the portal and then also having been sought after by Alabama to replace Nick Sabin uh saw him quickly elevated you you at that point then get into a place where kind of close to what George is in if not all the way to what George is in now that’s what I keep wanting to see happen now I’ll Grant you Georgia had won back-to-back national titles before this past year when they were kept out of the playoffs obviously by the loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game although I think Georgia was the best team in the country last year and I think they would have beaten any of the teams that were in the playoffs this year uh that that said that’s what you’re striving to get to and I never lose sight of that and I’m always looking at how close are we now somebody might say well you got to win a National Championship with the guy first before you can say that you’re at a place where you’re year after year or year over year expecting to do the same not really not really you can be knocking on the door and put together you know backto backto back Elite seasons and maybe they’re devoid of a national title but you are then in that realm where you are disussed with the same gravitas as whomever you want to point to Alabama Georgia Michigan whatever it might be yeah when Tua completes the pass in overtime to walk off Georgia Georgia had ascended to that place in the conversation even though they had not won the title and they got I mean in a rough way that’s toughy that’s a tough tough way to lose a title they hadn’t cleared the hurdle yet and you knew you knew that they were gonna get one you know they might not have maybe not 50 and four maybe not that kind of run but you knew that they weren’t just knocking on the door they were kicking it down and it would be a matter of time and that’s what it was for us I think if you go 12- one ACC champion no matter how you drop finding 12 wins out of that schedule you’re going to have a very impressive one two or three and at that point yeah you draw a through line and you say reputation wise we’re there maybe we can question the reality of it but reputation wise you’re there and that’s what matters with high school recruits that’s what matters in the portal so it only fortifies the ability to pluck really good talent and also it helps I mean let’s say the quiet part out loud it helps sponsors get involved with the university if we’re going to have this new $2 million thing and then it’s going to help people support a group like the battles end even more because you’ve you’ve proven it Beyond a reasonable doubt if you walk through this mindfield of a schedule especially compared to Clemson and Miami schedule ours is much more difficult than both of those two program schedules at 11 and one man you’ve done a hell of a job you know what’s awesome is uh is you know to see the s aneous rise of baseball and football and then to know that the college football game NCAA football EA Sports is coming out again next month here we are it’s already here uh our mutual friend George at gamesfor less on the parkway Tom reached out to way back when because you you’re gonna get Madden every year you’re gonna get NBA 2K every year you’re gonna get all these titles we have been without oh and apparently the I don’t know this is like when when uh critics quote unquote go to a movie premiere and they’re like five stars beautiful loved it but the the public hasn’t seen it yet the the on the ground critics haven’t seen yet everybody who’s played it and they put out a YouTube video on it I’ve watched far too many of those they’re saying good things they’re saying good things I might be just believing a lie but I’m hoping that it’s it’s a better or it’s a better experience than Madden because if it’s just the same thing as mad we’re all gonna be terribly disappointed yeah but we’ll still welcome it back we’ll still play it you know we will I uh I think about that game all the time and I think about how fast it uh has gone by the time between the last version and where we are now but I got to say I mean our opportunities to to uh waste hours on end at this Advanced age Tom I don’t know that that’s going to be as well received as it was the last time this game was out both for you and me it was a different world before I think um I know in our in our online dynasty that I had with my boys back in the day our GPA all took a massive hit took a massive hit because of the online dynasty and the immersive nature that we allowed ourselves to be a part of the online dynasty we go get us those 55 cent McDonald’s hamburgers but a case at Natty and we go to war but even still we can if there’s a will there’s a way we I just think there’s going to be a lot more of your Florida room or my basement or my or my living room where the spouse might poke their head throughout the door at 1: in the morning and they see the for the 2425 season your 2023 teams listed out as we know them to be and then there you see it Big 10 they do the additions of UCLA USC Washington Oregon for the 2024 list Big 12 you see the additions of Arizona Arizona State Colorado Utah none of whom were there a year ago Pack 12 you sadly go well they’re all gone they’re all gone except for Oregon State and Washington state which now comprise own recruiting footprint you can most certainly do that with the sunb belt appy state would be a prized commodity in terms of building an NCAA football Dynasty in a lesser conference absolutely uh lost so many games in a row and went sub 500 and now have slowly chipped away chipped away chipped away and won Ser you know we won the series against your wife’s team this past weekend lost the third game but won the first two and had back-to-back shutouts them i’ say I did not text Dr Quinn about those two shutouts I figured it it spoke for itself but then the only the only thing I heard about was the seven runs in the 10th the other day I didn’t hear about those other two games oh you didn’t hear about the back-to-back shutouts okay hey we scored seven runs in the tenth suck it is what she said won the one game against us in 10 Innings and yes that 10th inning was a disaster they scored seven runs but they were shut out in the previous two games for 18 Innings uh but yeah this is kind of what’s going on now we don’t offensively very limited in Pittsburgh but it’s like yeah go get you two bats and you’re gonna be legit good like legit good like a real problem because you have three Frontline guys now not I mean those are three All-Star candidates yeah when when you start your rotation with a guy named not just screwing I mean that’s you’re doing some things and I’m not kidding 80 wins might be enough the national league the national league after the the oligarchy of the Braves the Phillies and the Dodgers I guess you could throw what Chicago in there it’s like the American League Central it’s it’s like watching American League Central Baseball nobody’s good um yeah it it could be it could be a playoff run I’m not ahead of myself I do have the over on the Pirates season
