so a common question I get asked is how far from the golf ball should you stand at a dress now in the video I’m going to talk about obviously distance from the ball with the clubs uh the clubs run the balls on the ground but also with driver which is a little bit different and we talked about the mistakes I see amate golfers make and what the best players in the world do address and during their swing to really maximize their ball striking so distance from the golf ball obviously the three options are we could be too far away too close or just the right amount which sounds obvious but it’s how we find the right amount of distance from the golf ball that’s actually going to help us be consistent with how we hit the ball so for a lot of golfers I think what they’ll tend to find is that when they swing they stand up a lot and it’s because they tend to move a bit nearer the golf ball so they tend to give themselves more more room away at a dress which actually allows them to move nearer to the golf ball so I want you to kind of ignore what you’ve done in the past and all I want you to do is pop your hands on the club get that club nice and square and then I want you to feel that the weight’s very much over the arches of the feet and you’re just going to get the club about waist height and lean forward until the club touches the ground and you soften the knees and there should be about one and 1 half hands WID from the hands to the thighs so again waist height tip forward from the hips and soften the knees and then all you’re going to do is Shuffle into the golf ball now once you’re in that position there we should see that from the shoulders pretty much over the feet so you’re over the foundations there so we’ve got something to swing on top of now as a general rule I think most Club golfers amateur golfers I see don’t go through that routine what they tend to do is they know that they want to get down to the golf pool so they get far too crouched over the weight’s very forward in the feet and there’s a big gap here so what they’ll tend to do from there is they’re moving forward early extending those hips going towards the golf ball and they lift up they top it thin it maybe that dreaded one off the huzzle so if you can have a good routine of getting that little tilt forward nicely balanced and Shuffle in that’s going to make you much more consistent to begin with now if I look at the better players in the world though you don’t generally see the best players in the world too much this way at a dress if anything you tend to see them a bit taller over the golf ball now once you’re a little bit taller over the golf ball it’s obviously easier to stand a bit closer so I would much rather most Club golfers were too close to the ball as opposed to too far away now that’ll move me on to the GOL swing so what I would say is if you’re somebody who early extends you’ll be very nervous about being nearer the golf ball that’s okay though so we’re going to give you something to think about in your swing so you’re going to set yourself up go down soften the knees and move in we’re going to make the back swing pretty much as normal but as you start to swing down you’re going to feel like that front foot tries to push into the ground that way so like the ball of the foot pushing that way into the ground and you’ll see that’ll get that lead hip going back and creating room to swing the hands and arms into not hips going towards the ball weight in the toes and overbalancing this way so it’s definitely that feel of once you’re good at a pushing that foot that lead foot into the ground so from face on we’re there back and we can see actually what it creates is as the hip goes back you stay down over the shot not lifting through the ball but it all starts with finding that correct distance with wedges irons hybrids Fairway Woods of from there Lean Forward soften the knees and Shuffle into the golf ball and if you get that right all your shots from the ground or a tiny te you’re going to see a much better strike a much more consistent delivery and therefore a much more consistent result now obviously a lot of golfers struggle with the shots from the ground but then when we get this club in the hand all kinds of disasters occur so there’s a little bit of a difference with driver so because the golf ball’s in the air and the shaft’s much longer if I were to go through that same setup routine of Leaning forward to the golf ball we can see I’m naturally going to be much taller now the tendency is if I let my arms just hang from there you see how they’d be way too close to my body so we want to lean forward soften the knees but we can see now that gap’s a bit bigger with driver maybe 2 and 1 half three hands widths and then from there we’re also going to put just that tiny little spine tilt away to help with the delivery of the golf club and again have that same feeling of pushing that lead foot so you’re going to get in lean forward can definitely feel now my hands are more kind of under my nose as opposed to under my chin and then once you get there you can focus on putting a good movement on it and if you can get driver in play and then strike all the shots from the ground better te to Green becomes a much more enjoyable game

  1. I have a thing for this as part of my pre shot routine.

So I hover the club above the ball and make a swing above it (not a full swing) this gives me a visual for where the club will be at impact, and I then adjust from there. So for instance if it looks like the clubs hitting the heel on the wee practice swing, I move my feet back a couple of inches and vice versa. It needs working out properly but it has really made me aware of strike location

  2. Hey Ali, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made.
