so if you’re watching this video you probably agree that ball striking consistency is something that a lot of golfers found really hard they spend a lot of time making sure they get set up well but far too often they top the ball then it even when they get that good strike sometimes it’s a real Rarity and then sometimes they’ll get one off the outside of the club that disappears into the trouble like that one and a lot of the time your playing Partners will say that your head was moving around so you need to keep your head still well I’m going to tell you that you never ever want to keep your head dead still and there’s two ways your head’s possibly moving around in a negative fashion one during the back swing one during the down swing I’m going to run through both reasons why it happens and most importantly how you’re going to stop it so the first one that we tend to see with a lot of golfers is that as they set up to the golf ball everything looks pretty good but as they make the back swing they get to a point where the head starts to raise up the shoulder Plane flattens off and then obviously you’ve got to get back the perfect amount in order to hit that shot and as hard as it might be and you might really be trying to keep that head still to stop yourself lifting it actually might be a physical limitation that’s costing you that ability so I want you to run through this test with me if this is something you do during your back swing so you’re going to stand nice and Tall get your back arm from my right arm about shoulder height and then just rotate back the forearm as far as you can now you can see I can get that just past my spine angle and then I’m going to go into my golf posture and get the same movement and again you can see I can probably get just past my spine Angle now for a lot of you guys you’re going to see that when you’re here you can only get to about here maybe less than spine angle and in the golf posture you’re going to get a lot shorter than spine angle and that’s cuz the rotator cuff is a bit tight but little challenge for a lot of golfers is they kind of feel that in the back swing they want to make a nice big back swing now if I get some good length into my back swing you can see that forearm needs to be able to get past my spine angle Al otherwise that’ll happen and we’ll get the club across the line or for most of you golfers you’ll get to a point where you can and then to get further back you’ll lift up stand out of posture and that’s where we see the head moving around so if you are one of those golfers do that test initially and let’s say for example you can get to there you then want to feel in the back swing whereabouts do I get to where I’m less than my spine angle and then I can swing down so straight away it’ll feel a shorter back swing for you should instantly get you that ability to stand up feel that the Body Works a bit better a better strike the ability to get ball and then Turf you actually probably won’t lose any speed at all and start hitting the ball more consistent out the middle and a better distance even though I can’t promise that distance you will start picking up distance once you start hitting the middle of the club face more often so if you’re somebody in the back swing Who the head moves as you reaching the top check that shoulder mobility and then build the length back swing around what your body can do now the second part where we see the head move is definitely coming into impact and yours truly struggles with this so you’ll tend to see that golfers move towards the ball and then as they’re coming into impact it looks like they stand up through the shot now again there’s a real reason for this so what you’ll tend to see is when golfers get here and as they start the down swing they start moving the hips towards the golf ball so now there’s no room so in order to create room they’re going to come back taller the club’s going to come closer to them and they’re either going to come back above the ground or that horrible toey one we saw early on so when you actually look at the best players in the world and again this isn’t a case of staying still you actually see the best players in the world at a dress at say this height at impact they’re actually smaller and that’s because that trail arm is still more bent at impact so I’m not saying that you just want to try and get your head to go down but we’re going to do a movement with the hips that you’re going to get to the top of your back swing and you’re going to feel as you start down that you almost try to get your belt buckle looking more down towards the ball and you can see as the hips move back the belt buckle looks more at the ball the chest goes down and then you can turn your body out the way now this is something I do struggle with so this is the exact drill I would do so I would shorten my swing to begin with feel almost like a bit of a half swing but I’m going to feel belt buckle at the ball and then I can turn through and actually what you should see here is actually the height of my head reduced a little bit through impact I didn’t quite get it there contact wise but felt like I did the movement I was after so we can see little bit thin low Point ahead but even though that’s a short swing it does feel really powerful so get that little rehearsal that’s the noise I want to hear when I’m in here on the the map so let’s do this again with the swing such a better strike feels powerful lots of Club head speed right out the middle of the face been too much on Direction there but even though that swing felt short still 171 yds carry now I’m not going to do it exactly how I would do it in practice but I would probably hit at least six Maybe 10 shots with that short swing really trying to exaggerate that feel then start putting a bit of length back into the swing which could be a challenge because if you’re somebody like we saw at the start that struggles with that shoulder Mobility maybe that little half shorter back swing is actually your perfect gol swing now I know I can be a little bit longer and all I would expect really to see now is as I get longer retaining the strike and just a little bit more cled speed so again strike felt great we see a little bit more speed at 89 mph low Point still 2.8 in ahead clubs travel down 3° and then 169 carry now I know what you’re thinking the little half swing went further than that with less speed but what I am able to do with the little half swing is get into a very very very power position almost a bit like a punch shot for me so I know with Loft in my hand it goes a long way but I can’t quite get that feeling when the clubs have got a bit less Loft but that sensation of that shot if I could bottle that feeling take a lot more good shots more often so remember we’re not trying to keep the head still we’re going to work on the length back swing that’s Optimum to retain our height and then as we start down towards the golf ball those hips are going to start moving back away from the ball that’s going to create some room to swing the arms into and it sounds easy doesn’t it we’re just going to set up there put a good swing on it can strike it like that every time we see more speed at 90 mph low point an inch ahead maybe not hitting down quite as much as I would like but carry it 174 four but possibly the worst bit of advice I ever hear other golfers give their friends is you need to keep that head still like I said you don’t see any of the best players in the world keeping their head if you were drawing a circle around my head you don’t see any the best players in the world keeping that head dead still during the GOL swing they don’t lift up like see Club golfers do on the way back but in that down swing the head does drop a little bit as the those hips move back and that gives you lots and lots of room to swing those arms into and it’s much easier to get a good strike on the ball when your body moves as efficiently as it can

  1. I hear you and agree if the person is a lower handicap player. Still, from what I've observed, mid to higher handicap players are far better off trying to keep their head still because they move/sway way to much. They almost always end up striking the ball better.

  2. My practice swing is quite long but actual swing is short and can’t seem to get it longer during actual swing. Your tip on shorter back swing may well work for me. Slow swing speed under 70 mph with 7 iron and only around 125 yards😩
