PXG 0311 FAIRWAYS // Best Fairway Woods This Year?

Today Ian is in the bay with a well overdue review of the PCG 0311 Fairway woods. After being seriously impressed by the 0311 Black Ops driver earlier this year, Ian could not wait to get his hands on the woods for some testing too. Come see how they did!

better much better nice strike sounds so good I like the height off this thing yeah 120ish feet in the air like you said just nice to see that effortless height lots of people will enjoy that 150 ball speed off a off a five it’s good it’s pretty good isn’t it 133 ft in the air that one all right guys welcome back to the channel so long overdue Michael we have a review of The pxg Black Ops Fairway Woods we’ve talked about it being we’ve kind of I think dubbed it the the underdog driver of the year uh in the metal woods category pxg has been making you know strides towards the other drivers in the marketplace and fairwoods in the marketplace and in our test this year they’ve they’ve made the kind of last leap to be in that that conversation totally when we were out at Scottdale National in December I think it was uh and we got fitted for these the uh the ferry Woods um I think like the driver shocked us right out of the gates and it was something that you know we like the way it looked the way it sat the adjustability the sound everything so excited to to put it to the test and show that you know these are these are worth it if you’re in for a fit without a doubt loaded with technology um Carbon on top Mikey they’ve got the three kind of weight system on the bottom which we are big big fans of uh something where you can really play with obviously uh you know head rotation bias CG bias swing weight bias that’s another one you know having the 2 and 1 12 gram weights and the 12 1/2 gram having that option to to move kind of the the swing weight around like that weights are getting a little bit tricky nowadays with heads some are get tucked in the head and you know some are less adjustable some don’t really weigh that much there there is a weight system but maybe it weighs six grams this is an accumulative much much more meaningful amount of weight to to move which means it’s going to do something ultimately for you guys yeah I think playing with that Moi like like we saw in the driver you you said in the Black Ops driver well what can we go more than 10K in in forgiveness and you absolutely can um the amount of Weights so being able to play with weights in in this fairywood is is a nice option talk to me a little bit about the the head design from a shaping standpoint yeah it’s it’s it’s flat it’s very flat and and a little bit shallower face which you know they state is is great for all player Styles uh which is nice um again when I got fit into this I got fit into the fivewood as well just feels so easy just to get it up in there air feels like a big hybrid which is which is nice so um I’m don’t know why I don’t have it in the bag maybe maybe this weekend we’ll see what happens definitely one thing I think for those of you who are familiar with maybe some of the older Fairy Woods Adam’s tight lies especially you’ll see a boxiness to this uh to the shaping there there you know are certainly other fairwoods that have had sort of these kind of square you know sort of lines to it but it it does seem to share the a resemblance to some other Fairy Woods which I think is a positive it look familiar for a lot of the the kind of testers who have tried them so um adjustable sleeve we can turn it up and down a degree and a half gives us that three Dee range which is nice five would starting at 18 so 19 and a half down to seven 16 and a half so um yeah lots and lotss of options love it awesome let’s start five okay for us 235 yards out pxg fivewood your thoughts kind of addressing the ball nice nice little kind of I mean it’s not too small of a head but it is compact cly see plenty of Loft on it it’s nice no uh no I I think these woods look premium to me like just that I like the between the carbon and the crown and yeah looks really good it’s just my preference I would love them in in the Evolutions to come I’ve just preferred as the evolution has come along with these Woods I like when the the seam between the the body and the sorry yeah the kind of body of it and the crown is is Blended okay like I’d like that to go away sense um it’s just just a preference of mine I I don’t need to see the carbon for it to know that there’s carbon on it good strike out of the not bad it was a bit felt a hair thin but okay I’ll take it as a result better much better really nice strike sounds so good I like the height off this thing yeah 120ish feet in the air like you said just nice to see that effortless height lots of people will enjoy that 150 ball speed off a off of five it’s good it’s pretty good isn’t it 133 ft in the air that one y I like that one too Mikey yeah not pulley it just comes out a little lower a little left but you’re on the green yeah I I loved how it it kind of started on that line mhm and really didn’t want to go more than more than it start line yeah that’s a big one for me when I’m kind of picking Club if I I don’t love to see going left no one really does but if it can maintain its Integrity on on that left hand side and not turn and also with a little bit of a shut face it maintained it spin at 4,000 going to ask you like for a fivewood where do you like you play fivewood now where do you like your spin to be on average on a really nice one 308 to four right I think pretty much you know where this is so you’ve pulled that it’s come down 10 ft mhm in height and you’re you haven’t sacrificed an ounce of spin which is good no no no that that was nice maybe have just a hair in the neck Mikey yeah a little necky but again get away with it still pitched at 228 230 spin yeah 4100 4,200 it stayed right there do it NY one may necki actually probably toy probably I always think they’re toy probably thin okay didn’t give any ball speed up though no one more great strike these things definitely pack a punch they don’t uh they don’t slow down with ball speed or anything like that okay FES 275 yards out into the three-wood first thoughts initial thoughts right kind of addressing the ball yeah I think it sits fantastic Mikey little bit of a bigger footprint you can see that I think the honestly I think the more I look at it the more I like it why haven’t we heard people talk about these fear RS more I don’t know I feel like we’ve done them a disservice as well cuz we we raved about them like end of last year when we got fit for them um yeah it’s interesting I don’t know people people should be trying these cuz I think this 3-wood like I look down to that 3-wood it boosts a bit of confidence especially I mean customers we see three-wood is a struggle for a lot of can be um so with the adjustability of weight plus you know bigger footprint I think it could be a nice combo without a doubt great swing yeah I’m not going any better than that for you Mikey little flatter flight yeah just spin was hey Z nice window to be honest 2 2972 yeah 110 ft in the air really like it to your point about them being flat I mean look at that dynamically that’s coming in toe down to down probably why I’m struggling to turn it over for sure another pretty solid one maybe a bit it’s a pretty flight little Healy maybe B it’s actually felt good yeah right out the middle wer 157 MH that was a really nice I actually sounded uh sounded roasted that thing that’s kind of one I like to have to be honest like a like a nice flat one like that yeah get a little bit more out it that ball speeds way up W good mess I tell you where’ you miss it h still get 240 out it on the Fly obviously spin’s going to kick up a bit but mm great flight yeah wouldn’t hate it good swing little high in the face low spinner yeah 268 carry 283 total nice okay Mikey boy so as we said while we were hitting them yeah why aren’t people talking about these on I know you struck them nicely they sound good they look good they perform um there there’s that fivewood sneaky fast um it’s it’s got some it’s got some speed to it and I loved how high you’re able to hit it like I said when I look down it it’s a it’s a big hybrid which which is which is really nice easy to get out of some rough uh when I played it when we were down in Arizona so um these Woods definitely perform without a doubt um three-wood quite nice also 159 ball speed average 116 launch 3116 pretty much ideal ideal numbers I think you know play around with the the weights a little bit we had the weight in the tow you know a different day put that we back a little bit might just tick that launch angle just up a little bit bringing that CG a bit deeper that wouldn’t be a bad thing um but a good amount of distance sort of 25 yards of distance yeah that’s the that’s the ideal Gap isn’t it that’s which guys is a big thing when we do these Woods it’s not a case of how far do they go They’re impressive because they go far does a fivewood be behave like a fivewood and does a three-wood behave like a three with mhm yeah good point this more important than than anything else so um relative to how they were delivered which was pretty neutral on the day path was a degree and a half and 2° and yeah as we as we normally see a fraction down on the five and and a fraction up on the three which is totally totally fine um yeah impressive stuff a plethora of adjustability tons tons with the weights with the sleeve um the head will offer you as competitive of of a ball speed launch angle spin rate you know sort of consistency as you want to see they’re they’re in the conversation with everything definitely it’s it high ranks high up there with like a a tour part for me I think it looks really premium um and if yeah if you’re in for a fitting request to test them because the it’s a it’s a really really good fairywood it definitely is okay guys good stuff maybe you’ve beat us to it maybe you’ve already tried the pxg fairwoods if you have please let us know um these probably should have been in our our kind of test repertoire quite some time ago but you know there was so much to test 1. Witnessing the empathy and understanding displayed by members of this community is truly heartwarming. It's a beacon of hope in a sometimes turbulent world.😛

  2. I love a good fairway test. However, for the majority of club golfers, we shouldn't be playing a 3w, personally I would prefer to see a test of a 5w and 7w in the same family rather than, as here, the 3w and 5w.

For me I think the testing of the 5w was a bit limited. I would also want to see Ian trying to hit a lower one to see how easy that is, because sometimes on a long par 3 or long par 5 we need a shot that comes in low and runs on rather than landing softly. Similarly any test should try shaping shots left and right to see if the club head makes that easy or not because particularly on par 5s the second shot often has to be shaped around trees (maybe that says more about my driving!). For me a really good 5w or 7w has to be able to do all those things

  3. I tested the black ops 3w at my local Club Champion just a few weeks ago. Looks, sound, feel, were all great! The distance and spin rates were comparable to other OEM’s. The issue was, for whatever reason, it sat open at address for me. Even my fitter noticed and it was confirmed with the swing data. So we didn’t hit more than seven or eight shots with it.

I should also add I’m not a big fan of the “glossy” crown look. I do prefer the matte finish. My current 3w is a Ping g425 max. But PXG definitely has my attention and I’ll be looking at future models.

  4. I have the Black Ops driver (9 degrees), 4 wood (currently adjusted to 18 degrees), and 7 wood (currently adjusted to 22 degrees) Absolutely love all of them. They are all beasts. I have the weights in all of them at standard. The 7 wood especially is incredibly fun to hit and easily launches high with a lot of distance. These clubs are a lot of fun and have definitely improved my game!

  5. The issue is PXG has a reputation for terrible woods. Up until Gen 5 they were terrible and the PXG fitters would tell you that. I've had the Gen 5 and 6 and both are awesome. Once reviewers like yourself and others start talking them up then people will come around on them.
