[Music] swinging a drive right Fielding deep back goes aino it’s got a chance [Applause] gone get out the tape measure long gone fly the W Cubs fans it’s time to fly the W with Dustin rhods and Paul Crawley Jean you are listening to the fly the w670 podcast episode 36 of season number three Cubs just mediocre against the Mets don’t forget to listen download review most importantly subscribe to the podcast follow us on the socials fly the w670 on Twitter Instagram fly thew on Facebook email us at fly thew 67@gmail.com Carley happy Thursday not a great afternoon for the Cubs after a wild wild Wednesday night yeah Dustin I mean it’s just been uh I think it’s just kind of the story of the season is somehow someway just the ups and downs and it’s it’s just buckle up because this is a wild ride so far well buckle up indeed and it’s not going to get any easier with the first place Brewers coming to the uh Federal Landmark Friday Saturday and Sunday but let’s uh first go ahead and start off by recapping a four game set Crowley’s favorite Cubs at the metropolitans game number one Jameson tyion Luis sevino yeah I hate four game series and this exactly why uh it looked like a good pitching match up on paper tyion versus srino and Dustin they delivered didn’t look good for the Cubs as the first hitter Jameson tyone face Brandon Nimo who just always kills the Cubs crushed a home run to right center and right away the Cubs are down one- nothing but after giving up a single in the first to JD Martinez tyone walked it uh locked it down he went seven in a third Innings gave up only four hits that one home run one walk and onek he retired 22 of the next 26 batters he faced after the first inning tyon gave up only two hits and one walk from the second through the eighth inning Dustin this was one of the most impressive pitching performances of the season for the C he looked he he looked he looked really good he looked really locked in and he looks really comfortable out there this year I mean compared to last I felt just really really comfortable yeah you know it it was just a weird year last year and he got it going in the second half but the bad taste from the first half I think kind of really had Cub fans down on him and he’s really just ever since he’s been back it’s been unbelievable yeah he’s been awfully good unfortunately for tyone and the Cubs Ton’s old Yankee teammate was even better Luis severino’s stuff was absolutely electric and the Cubs hitters were absolutely baffled he was flying through each inning and the Cubs were no hit going into the eighth inning the Cubs got their first base runner in the fourth when Ian half walked and their second base runner when tan got hit by a pitch in the seventh but that’s it two base runners no hit through seven Innings the Cubs were able to break up the no hitter in the eighth Michael Bush let off with a walk and then Dansby Swanson hit a broken bat single over the short stop for the Cubs first hit is Ron Kumer like to say that bat died a hero Matt mvis hit one that the Mets tried to turn into a double play as Alonzo threw the second to get Swanson out um you know he couldn’t complete the double play as mvis was hustling and srino had trouble finding the bag so now the Cubs had Runners at first and third with one out for pit hitter Nick magical and Dustin this is where the Mets made a big mistake Nick hit one to third baseman Joey Wendell who had been brought in at the beginning of the ending play defense and magical hits a weak ball to third base and at 49 miles per hour off the bat and Wendell’s charging it but instead of throwing home to get Bush out he throws it to Second and tries to start an inning ending double play but magical reaches safely and the game’s tied at one Dustin the play is right in front of him he’s in there for defense he should have thrown it home but yeah but that’s okay we’re not going to complain about that sure he should he should have done that I agree with you but we’re not gonna We’re not gonna play We’re Not Gonna We’re Not Gonna complain We’re Not Gonna complain huge break for the Cubs let’s take it all right take it take every break you can get you need it tyone come comes out in the eth you gets the first out before Thomas Neato singled Mark leader C Mark ligher came in a day after giving up a l in Boston he pitched well to get the Cubs out of the inning and then at the top of the ninth Edwin Diaz Mr Timmy trumpet comes into the game he Strikes Out ni horer but the red hot Mike Towman doubled the center Ian hap struck out for the second out and Christopher morell’s up to bat and Morell had been in a horrendous slump seven for 57 123 average in his previous seven games the last time he hit a home run Dustin was three weeks ago against San Diego on April 9th it seems longer than that yeah teams have been pitching fast balls in on the fist to Morell and then sliders away he’s been floundering and that was the plan Diaz throws the fast ball it’s supposed to go in towards the hands of morel but it leaks towards the middle of the plate and you want to put a fast ball on the middle plate against Christopher Morell he crushes it 42 feet and for the first time in nine innings the Cubs finally took a lead three to one great home run that was a great home run great moment I felt great for him he he he he deserved it yeah you know just such a great kid and it’s kind of been a struggle for him for a little bit this year and when you take a look at this right here you’re you’re looking at now you bring in Hector nerys for the safe and it’s never easy being a Cubs fan Dustin he had Alonzo 0 and two and then walked him now remember lead off walks come around to score 25 to 30% of the time he got JD Martinez to fly out but then walked Jeff mcneel to put the tying run on First and the winning run at the plate Tommy hotovy comes out and whatever he said to nerys work he struck out the next two batters and the Cubs fly the W stealing game one from the Mets there’s that was absolutely I mean when you think about that being no hit going into the eighth inning I mean it’s you know you get those notifications on your phone and then coming back and taking that one absolutely unreal yeah that being the thief in the night is a good way to put it Cowley yeah they had no business winning that one but we’ll take it we move now to game number two and the Very underrated Javier Assad was throwing yeah with Javier Assad versus Shawn Mani I thought I thought that this was the one the Cubs should have won and they lose four- two let’s start with the one positive from the game right Javier aside continues to dominate and still is not getting the recognition he deserves Dustin they put this stat up on Marquee Network I I don’t know if you saw it in the over the last 365 days the lowest ER minimum 100 Innings it’s not Blake Snell it’s not Jordan Montgomery it’s not Garrett Cole it’s Javier Assad at 2.44 I did see that I did see that I but I it’s still it’s amazing to me that’s amazing phenomenal and and so it’s more the same for Assad he went five innings pitch he gave up only one run and that’s because a shoty defense with no walks and 1K he he deserved a better result than a no decision sure did now one day after being no hit into the eighth inning and scoring three runs on three hits in the game all in the eighth and ninth inning the Cubs offense failed to show up again this time the Cubs only had two runs on four hits with one out in the second Dansby walked Mike talkman singled to put Runners at the corners and Nick magikal walked to little the bases but the Cubs could not get the big hit Miguel Amaya did hit a sack fly to score um Dansby uh crossed the plate to tie the game uh but you know you got to do better than that when when you’re in that situation Alexander Canario struck out so you had the bases loaded one out and you only got one run right yeah I mean the run runs are an issue for this team right now as we go through this thing absolutely and the Cubs had two on in the third with two outs when Swanson struck out Morel hit a lead off single on the six and stole second but the Cubs left him stranded the only extra base hit of the night for the Cubs came in the ninth when Mike talkman doubled and would later score on two ground outs for the Cubs second run so now all four runs Dustin on Tuesday night were a scored as a result of errors in the first inning with one out Francisco Lindor singles right and then Amaya catches Lindor leaning and he he’s he’s trying to steal second base and Lindor is is now caught they throw it to Patrick wisdom and he’s now trying to just run into second but Patrick wisdom throws it into the Outfield allowing Lindor to reach third third so instead of one out and the runner out at second you now have the runner at third yeah and so Pete Alonzo hit a sack fly to put the Mets up one nothing and so that that that shouldn’t have scored then with the score tied at one in the six adbert aleli comes in for aad and we’ll talk about adbert in a little bit but he he gets Pete Alonzo to pop out now then JD Martinez reaches on a throwing air by Dans B Swanson his fourth air of the season edbert gets the next bat or Jeff mcneel to fly out that would have been three outs Dustin and for a guy that’s just struggling so much you just gotta get out of the inning instead Tyrone Taylor singles and then DJ Stewart hits a three-run blast to right field to give the Mets a four to one lead for alide that was his fifth home run he has given up this season so the lack of offense awful defense and a struggling Bullpen all contribute to this loss Dustin you guys had Tommy hadv on the mully and haw show and he talked a little bit about aliz struggles here’s what he had to say I mean I think anytime a guy goes through rough patch has some struggles you know there’s always um there’s always something going on right there’s always something you can kind of Point your finger to and say okay if we can fix these things or address these things we feel confident he’s going to get back on the right track and you know we were able to identify some things a little earlier in the year mechanically with adbert that we felt were affecting his pitches and he felt like he wasn’t seeing some of the same shapes you know that he was used to seeing in the past and you know we took that you know worked on it and felt like we’ve addressed it you know and he’s in a better place feeling there now you know honestly it’s just about going out and and gaining confidence and and one thing you do when you have guys that struggle especially when they struggle you know back into the gamees you try to put them in pockets in different pocks of the game and in different parts of the lineup you feel like they going to it’s going to be beneficial for them and and the matchup wise is going to help them kind of continue to gain that confidence you know I want to stop it right there you know he he talked about putting him at different pockets of the game and you know who you’re gonna face if if Dansby Swanson doesn’t make that air he doesn’t face Stewart who’s a left-hander and that’s always been ad Bert’s issue he struggled he’s struggled throughout his career against lefties but you know they put him in that situation so he wouldn’t have to face a lefty and and if if it wasn’t for that air he you know who knows what it happen but a lot of a lot of would have could have should have right a lot of would have could have should have right there but you you can’t just melt down because the defense behind you fails you or or go go to The Bu if you can’t get it done then go to the bullpen and get him out of there right I don’t I mean you you I I think people kind of make this more simplistic than it really is you can’t just keep yanking guys out of there getting guys warmed up and putting them in there you can’t keep taking guys and putting them up and down up and down every every time something happens I get it on my Twitter a thousand times send the guy to Iowa no it doesn’t work well I’m not yeah yeah I don’t know about that I mean they’re also not in a position to send the guy to Iowa because they’re down a couple guys if they were fully healthy might be able to get away with that but not right now I’m just saying that that you need your gold Glover to play defense Al Li’s in a little bit of trouble right now and he doesn’t have the mental health base that was the spot to do it and the defense let him down that’s all I’m saying no they did it did they it defin it definitely let him down and and I don’t know if it would have been any different had somebody else been at first base other than Patrick wisdom right there yeah don’t know but we get to I I thought that throw was low in away I know some people were down on wisdom that I think the one in the obviously the one in the first inning was his fault that was a bad throw it was away it was tailing and it was bouncing that was a difficult catch to make that now if you have a gold glove first baseman like Anthony Rizzo which we haven’t had in a while then yes but if you’re just talking even about I think even a League average first baseman I don’t think they make that play all right so the series is now 1-1 we move into game three this was Wednesday evening sh imanaga making his making his debut against the Mets and uh funny before the game heard that uh uh he felt like he was knew where he was because it looked like Spider-Man out his window yeah it’s where they shot the movie Spider-Man so you know when you talk about a superhero you can’t find of a better one right now than showa imanaga uh the Cubs struggling often scored three runs on Monday two runs on Tuesday and on Wednesday they scored only one run on hot five hits going the wrong way Dustin 321 and so Nico let off the game with the double talkman draws a walk but the Cubs couldn’t Advance the runners and Stranded them both there really wasn’t another threat until the fifth inning when Matt muris L off with the double he Advanced to Third on a wild pitch and scored on a one out sack cly by PCA I love the fact that PCA made contact there the uh Herer double in the first and then the double in the fifth by mvis were the only two extra base hits the Cubs had they allowed Jose B to go six Innings who he only gave up the one run on four hits with two walks and six K so the offense again not to be found lucky for the Cubs sha imanaga is on the mount and he continues to dominate seven shutout Innings gave up three hits one walk and seven K our buddy over at Marquee Chris kka uh had a couple of interesting tweets right here MLB a lad leaders minimum 25 Innings pitched shy IM managa at the top of the list7 eight ER Ranger Suarez Jose bario and former white sock Ronaldo Lopez round out the top four and then how about this for the for how important he is to this rotation the Cubs have had eight starts of six plus Innings pitched this season eight imanaga had four everyone else had four and the only reason imanaga does have five is because of he was the rain out he got because the rain delay and he got pulled out from the game yeah yeah so unfortunately Dustin for the cub you you imanaga cannot go five innings every start so they have to turn it to the bullpen in the eighth all they need to do is get six outs CZ pey right but no that’s a tall ask right now it’s supposed to be it’s supposed to be first out of the pen Mark ligher who got Brandon nmo to strike out but gave up a single to Brett batty and then walk DJ Stewart to put the tying run at second his day is done yansy alonte comes out and struck out the next two batters I thought he was really good missing bats on that one then we go to the ninth and Hector now hard attack Hector hard attack Hector I’m gonna say this now Dustin you know people say well he’s getting the job done it’s not sustainable it is not sustainable the way he is walking guys and the contact that’s being made off of him it’s a matter of time before he blows his first save uh he got the first out but then hit uh Pete he hit Pete Alonzo to put the tying run on the base then JD Martinez crushed one to Center PCA made it there but it bounced in and out of his glove I think if you ask PCA he said he should have made the catch either way you should have made okay we got to get into this do do you want to get into this or not sure go ahead okay so does anybody else get there does talkman get there or does Bellinger get there I don’t think they go there get uh maybe Bellinger as quick as PCA PCA gets there quicker than both of them okay so he got there that that’s half the battle right he he got there but it hit his glove it’s like a wide receiver in football I mean it hit it hit him in the hands he’s supposed to be a defensive guy he’s supposed to be a glovan that that’s why that’s why he’s up here so since he got there he needed to come down with that ball and if the game had gone differently that would have been the lead today instead of what the lead was right yeah he’s got to make the catch it it was tough you know I’m not saying it wasn’t it wasn’t let’s just put it this way I don’t know that he needs to leave his feet every time either right it wasn’t an easy it wasn’t an easy catch but it was one that like I said he should have made I wouldn’t have called it if he made it I would have been like hell yeah that’s why you’re here but I don’t I don’t know that it would have been like top 10 I don’t know that it would have been Circus catch anything like that it was you know good defensive play I but it wasn’t he didn’t need to leave his feet and crash into the wall well because of that situation you got Runners at second and third one out and Dustin I thought you know I listened to the call on TV I listened to the Cubs radio call of it but to me Gary Cohen’s call from SNY in New York was really an interesting call and here’s how they called the final play of the that game one two coming McNeil flies one toward the left field line tagging up as Alonzo half over makes the catch Here Comes Alonzo here comes the throw it’s cut off thr to the plate he’s out okay watch it bounce and it goes up and then it’ll slap down again does the tag go on first so close it is so close well if the call is upheld the game’s over and the Cubs win this one will be as difficult to parse as any call they’ll make all season it’s going to yep it’s going to take a while two calls on the field blocking it’s confirmed there is no blocking after review the call of out on the field stand Runners out so the Cubs win the game so it was a really great call what ends up happening and I’m not going to mention David Hall in the Boston game but it’s very similar is you got guys at second and third and the ball’s hit to Ian hap who’s kind of in I’d say what mid left field not deep not shallow he gets the ball he throws it to magical who throws it to who throws it to aaya really nice rep uh uh replay or throw their relay throw and you get the old 752 double play now immediately Mets the old 752 right the car car Carlos Mendoza the Mets man manager comes out and challenges the play with two different objections one is if Alonzo beat the tag the other whether was he was given a proper lane and the Umpire ruled for the call on the field in both cases the Run did not count the game is over but Dustin let me just break this down really quick right here the Cubs luck out on this one number one is that great call again by Gary Cohen and Ron Darling and Ron Darling was right when he explained no offense but pet Lonzo can hit home runs he’s not a base runner that slide was awful it was a belly flop and he kind of bounced and when he bounced his arm went up and Amaya got the tag on him so the tag call was correct but baseball before every season they issue kind of updates on the rules and this is what was issued before the season started the F they sent pictures three pictures the following setups yeah are illegal without possession of the ball and place to catch her in Jeopardy of violation you cannot have the foot on the foul line or home plate you cannot be straddling the foul line you cannot be in foul territory or straddling home plate so that first one and if you’re watching this on 670 score YouTube channel says the foot cannot be on home plate and so Miguel Amaya his foot was on home plate he gave the Run aane but it’s behind but to me it’s it’s in the back of Home Plate it’s not in the front of home plate so the runner has part of home plate to get to it’s not blocking it all in all of these examples that you just showed this is great this is great the catcher is in front of the plate the runner has nowhere to go but you’re saying so by the letter of the law it should have been blocking on the letter of the law it should have been blocking because his foot was on home plate that’s the letter of the law is he has to be in Fair territory in front of homeate plate well he is in Fair territory not but he’s on home plate he has to be in front of home plate but okay that’s the rule I’m just saying if it would have gone the see it’s funny it’s funny I I said it shouldn’t have been blocking but I did also said that the uh polar bear was safe see and I think it’s the other way but but again it’s interesting that’s what that’s what’s so I mean that’s what’s that’s what’s interesting about this but I’m just surprised you know they they New York also came out with a statement um and said that it was the trajectory of the throw and the ball that put manah in that bad space right no doubt about that but based on their rules he shouldn’t have been on the plate at all but hey we’ll take the win again another take the win you know I don’t know if it was a freebie I don’t know it was a freebie that took a heck of a lot out of them it took a heck of a lot out of me and was quite um quite The Conversation Piece this morning on the mlly and haw show so the uh Cubs have a chance to win the series this afternoon the Mets have a chance to split the series this afternoon and Ben Brown had the ball this afternoon yeah the Cubs offense was desperate to get jump started and they had a chance to score some runs in the second Michael Bush win hit a one out double Patrick wisdom walk Nick magical reached on a fielders choice they were trying to get a double play wisdom was safe you got Bases Loaded one out PCA grounded out so that was one run one nothing but Jan Gomes popped out to end the threat we kind of figured Jan Gomes was do for some regression after last season uh but the Cubs were finally able to put a crooked number up uh in the fifth with one out Nico single talkman lined out for the second out Ian ha drew a walk they executed a nice double steal but it wasn’t necessary as Christopher Morell hit his second home run of the series to put the Cubs up for nothing Ben Brown was looking for a bounce back from that rough start against Boston I thought he looked a lot better you didn’t see the hard contact that you did in his previous start he was no hitting the Mets through for Innings he got some defensive help he walked DJ Stewart to lead up the fourth but then Mike talkman doubled him off on a short Fly ball to right little brain camp cramp by Stewart he kind of was a little bit too far off the bag and as uh talkman was running in he threw him out at first so little brain cramp but we’ll take it but Brown ran into some trouble in the fifth after morel’s home run and his team up for nothing Brown walks the first batter he face can’t do that with a four-run lead Dustin you you got a four nothing you know he had as many he had as many KS as he had walks on the afternoon right five and five yep Harrison Bader singled to put Runners at first and second he got the next two Mets out but Brandon nmo we talked about him before uh with he ended up uh getting there and Starling Marte hit back-to-back singles to cut the Cubs lead to four to2 Ben walked DJ Stewart to uh have to face the uh Bases Loaded Brown’s day was done and Keegan Thompson came in and got a big big strikeout to end the inning you and I were both excited about that but for brown he went 4.2 Innings gave up two runs on three hits with five case the big issue was the walks five of them and that’s why you know he can’t get deeper into games yeah the the walks will absolutely burn your backside every single time now the Cubs got an insurance run in the six thanks to doubles by Patrick wisdom and PCA to make it five to2 good thing they did because the Mets came fighting back in the bottom of the inning P Keegan Thompson’s been pitching great he’s still in the game he’s given up zero earned run so far Jeff mcneel hits one right to Keegan he drops the ball when he’s trying to fielded it and then rather than whip it to first base he kind of flips it casually underhand and mcneel was hustling out of the box he’s safe so two mistakes on Keegan there you know dropping the ball and then not not dropping it yeah dropping it was tough that that that double double clutch if you will right and then after that he struck out Brett bardy but Harrison Bader singled to two on for pinch hitter Francisco Lindor it’s his flu game right Lindor wasn’t supposed to play he’s got the day off he doubles to score both Runners and now all of a sudden the this situation gets kind of off the rails uh Keegan gets to Second out Council went with a lefty Richard live love lady AKA dick love lady to face the Lefty Brandon nmo nmo is going to double to tie the game at five Dustin so very frustr rating there you had a lead of you know I think just I think yeah I I mean we talked about it earlier you can’t just they it’s like they fell in love with Keegan in that spot and it was just just one like you like two batters too long right it was it was it just seemed like it was right there for the taking and then it all went South right you had leads of four nothing and then you had leads of five to two and now you’re tied at five and so it’s a battle of the bullpens I I thought that Keegan Tom uh I’m sorry I thought that yeny alonte looked good again he went one inning Hector nerys looked okay this time no heart attacks he got a strike out Daniel Palencia is in the game and when Daniel comes into the game in the 10th inning that’s when um things kind of get really interesting I thought that he really had some good stuff in the 10th he was 100% dealing and you you have the Cubs couldn’t score in the top of the 10th uh I know in the top of the 10th though you had Christopher Morell he’s at second base um he steals third base with one out but then he flies into it Patrick wisdom hits kind of one to shallow to Mid right Darlin Marte throws Morell out at home and so the Cubs do not score with the Manford Man I I didn’t agree with that by the way I didn’t agree with going on that you didn’t like the Willie Harris send no I did not yeah it’s it’s tough you know you hope you I know it’s easy to say now I know it’s easy to say now but I just I I didn’t like it now Daniel Palencia comes in the bottom of the 10th you got a runner there and Pete Alonzo GRS out to niik hoer so the runner does not Advance Jeff mcneel lines out and then Brett Bailey strikes out the final pitch 101 mile per hour yeah throwing he was throwing some gas you get to the 11th and you got a runner at second Patrick wisdom Nick magical doubles to make it six to five and Dustin all I kept saying is just get that next run in just so you have a little cushion because one run when you have the Manford Man is nothing in Extra Innings it really is and so especially if you’re the visiting team and so Dansby Swanson who got some rest which I thought was a smart move by uh Craig councel he comes in and he strikes out for the first out but Dustin I am so sick of these umpires that was a terrible it was a terrible call uh I was in the car at that point Kum went after him K went after him uh just awful brutal call that he was called out on four strikes but three of the strikes that were called on him were not even close to being in the zone and so this umpire today was just awful and I just cannot wait I don’t understand what the waight is to get the challenge system in um get it done you know you got the technology freaking use it you know right have the technology use it y I agree so Gomes grounds out to Third and then they intentionally walk Nico Herer and then uh what ends up happening is that you have a play where Mike talkman singles Nick magical is trying to score he is out on the throw home so in the 10th you had a runner caught at home and in the 11th you had a runner thrown out at home to end the inning and so that takes you to the B make what’s the old one to make don’t make the third out at home plate right right it’s it’s tough in these situations in these Extra Inning games with the Manford Man and then you get to the Manford Man is Brett Bailey to start the inning and unfortunately Daniel Peno was not as sharp he hits Harrison Bader with a pitch which hey I don’t mind because I hate Harrison Bader but then Francisco Lindor doubled on a ground ball that was a walk-off right there Dustin and when you take a look at Francisco Lindor who just came in like I said to pinch hit uh you know he just had a day four RBIs on two it bats yeah so two two doubles four RBI he really just killed the Cubs Cub killer y you thought you’d put him in the rearview miror the other day but nope in the last 17 Innings Dustin 17 games dating to April 14th Cub starters have thrown the fourth most innings in the National League with 90.2 compared to the first 14 games when they were dead last in that category so the pitching the starting pitching has looked great when you look at Ben Brown when you look at Hayden mnisi when you look at Javier Assad and sha imanaga the the pitchers are doing their thing the offense has got to step up the Cubs need guys like Ian hap and Dansby swans specifically I’m looking at you two guys to step it up there’s a lot of young kids in the lineup because of injury and it’s hard to expect them to carry the load Dustin the defense has to step up we need to talk about this this is a team that has four gold Glovers on it Nico Dansby Cody and Ian hap it is built for run prevention now obviously Cody’s out you know with injury but the other three gold Glovers have not looked impressive Morel shaky at third and Bush is struggling making picks out of the dirt at first Nico Horner leads the team with erors with five uh four at second and one at Short dansby’s next with four errors followed by Morell with three and then Amaya and Bush have two there’s other plays us and I thought should have been scored airs but were’re scored hits but this team is with this Bullpen it needs the defense to really step up and again I need Ian hap and I need Dansby Swanson to start hitting the ball yeah yeah he’s got he’s got to be better and and if he’s not going to be if he’s not going to be like gold glove God at uh shortstop he’s got to be better at the plate absolutely you are listening to the fly the w670 podcast it is season 3 it is episode number 36 the Cubs mediocre against the Mets in this segment we continue our down on the farm features Brendan King the broadcast with South Ben Cubs talks to a young even better to be talking Cubs baseball with you again after a long winter yes sir and I got to tell you you know it is z00 Cubs Mets right now there’s been a lack of offense but no lack of offense for South Bend today a 9 to3 victory over the Lancing lug nuts that had to have been a fun one to call yeah I love it here in Lancing you know what I haven’t been here since 2019 personally the team hasn’t been here since 2021 which doesn’t make a lot of sense because geographically we’re one of the closest teams in the midwest league but we’re not in the same division which is a little weird so that constitutes Lancing coming to us the last number of years but it’s always great to be up here the staff is awesome it’s a really cool field right in the middle of downtown Lancing but as I’m sure we’ll talk about much needed because it’s back-to-back wins after a bit of a rough April for the Southbend Cubs but things are looking up uh May 1 you start that with a win ended April with a W as well and um you know hopefully things are getting better as we go because we are hitting the ball well there’s no doubt about it top three in the league in base hits so it’s just a matter of getting outs and the South ping Cubs are going to be back like you mentioned 8 and 15 but it’s it’s early right now and and I think sometimes there’s just an adjustment period for some of these kids because how cold it can be you know obviously we know April games in you know whether it’s Indiana or Illinois just in the midwest is just freaking cold I remember Kevin Alcantara getting out to that slow start as well and then blowing up there’s no question and I was about to bring up Alcantara because it was last year this time of year we were in Midland Michigan which is even more north of laning it was like 32 degrees every day it was snowing one it was freezing you could I was able to see my breath talking out of the broadcast Booth that’s how cold it was so it was freezing alcantar was out there playing Center felt horrible for him and like you said there are some kids now at this level that are playing cold baseball thankfully it was very warm today and it’s going to be warm this week and and up to 80 but start of April guys like Jefferson roas who was 18 at the start of the year he turned 19 literally last week we’ll talk about more more about him in a moment Pedro Ramirez is only 20 um and and to go along with it too there’s a lot of young kids that just have never played in this environment before I will say yo Hendrick Pango got out to a blazing start it’s his third year back with South Ben he’s from Venezuela he knows exactly what to expect and he had his best start to a season yet in his career he’s still only 21 years old so some guys who have become accustomed to it the last couple years have been able to kind of fill in the cracks and deal with the es and flows but as you said for the guys that are 18 19 20 that are in 30° weather for the first time after coming from spring training and in Arizona by the way that’s going to be a bit of a culture shock absolutely and and but one guy who doesn’t seem to be affected by cold or or whatever is is Jefferson roas shortstop top rated Prospect that’s in uh that’s in South Ben and I remember seeing him down in Myrtle Beach and it was just you know I I I was like oh I gotta watch Christian Hernandez and all a sudden I start watching this Jefferson Roos kid and I’m like what the heck do we got here this is really something else and it’s amazing because chrisan Hernandez is off to a dynamite start this year which I’m sure you and Sam weer half will talk about at some point because Christian wants to get out of Myrtle Beach clearly he’s atting over 300 and I’m sure he’ll be in Southbend soon but Jefferson Roos as you said played well enough to start playing shortstop every day at Myrtle Beach and that kind of made Christian Hernandez play second which is wild when you consider the fact of when Hernandez signed he’s still again a very good Prospect very good player but it was kind of the opposite when roas signed he was thought of as a good Prospect but not like the Hernandez level now it seems like it’s kind of flipped and that’s because roas for a guy that Proby is 18 at the start of this year again just turned 19 he does first of all does not look like a high schooler with the body there there are a lot of guys that are 18 19 that you see that like okay you know what they still have the high school body once they get him in the performance center they’re going to get stronger Ros is a absolutely Rift and like you said his first swing in the midwest League was a home run in Davenport Iowa I want to paint the picture here for you modern women par in dport Iowa the ballpark is positioned just adjacent to the Mississippi River literally the water is 20 feet away from the right field barrier so that means there’s some crazy wind even crazier than Wrigley right when the wind’s blowing in off of the Mississippi River it’s nutty in the month of April because it’s cold it’s windy um it’s chilly didn’t didn’t really bother roas 30 degree gust coming in off the Mississippi River he goes upo goes over the right field wall screw that win right first swing in the midwest league is a bomb and right now Cowley he is on a 16 game hitting streak that is the best of any Midwest League player also the best of any player at the high a level um and if he gets a base hit tomorrow we’re talking here on Wednesday night if he gets a base hit on Thursday that’ll be 17 games and that’ll tie the mark of the best hitting streak by a Southbend Cub ever there’s an old Southbend silverhawk Andrew Velasquez that had a long long hitting streak and that’s not going to be broken anytime soon but he would tie Roberto Caro Eloy Jimenez and his teammate yo Hendrick Pango if he gets a base hit tomorrow with 17 and then if he gets a hit then on Friday he would set a new South b cups record well you know you were talking about the hot bats and and you know right his his double play partner Jefferson roas Pedro Ramirez at second is probably hitting better than anybody Batten 500 Crawley over his last week he is now going to be 19 for his last 31 at the plate guy is ferocious 20 years old he’s is a switch hitter which I really like um he hit eight home runs last year with burtle beach so he does have power but I’m not really concerned about any sort of power for him because he’s finding a home right now in the two spot of the southb order he’s on an eight game hitting streak as of today and again like you said at the start of this we won 93 today so there was a lot to update in the box scores and The Game notes of guys continuing streaks actually seven of the nine guys Crawley in the lineup today extended hitting streaks of some sort so like you said the bats are hot Pedro Ramirez he can hit for power I love his contact ability but I think what I really commend him on most is from both sides of the play and this could be very difficult as a young player when you are learning how to be a switch hitter at a higher level it could be difficult to kind of Master the same concept of hitting on both sides he loves to slap the ball the other way whether that’s from the right or left side so he can use third base as a lefty he can use first base as a righty and that constitutes that he’s a pretty professional type dude uh that can really hit now you know the thing I like about this South bent team is you do have a lot of new faces but you also got some veterans on the team which I think helps out you know you mentioned uh y Hendrick Pango uh Fabian petruse K Casey opit Parker shers so you got some guys that are back um but one guy that you know we’re always kind of looking at 2020 first round draft pick Ed Howard um you know you know trying to fight for time a little bit for at second base how’s Ed looking so far yeah this is a question I get a lot and rightfully so because Chicago loves their their own right and that’s Ed Howard Mount carel kid one of my rival high schools so I’ve gotten to know Ed over the last number of years Proby if I’m really being honest with you it’s Ed still is still getting over exactly what happened a couple years ago not mentally because he’s 100% in it it’s just it was such a harmful and demoralizing injury Cy there are guys that never came back from the injury that he had and here’s what I like to say he’s only 22 and he has missed two full years of service time in his career he’s missed a full year due to co he’s missed a full year due to the hit so that would mean Ed has the experience of a 20-year-old which you can’t make up lost experience I’m well aware of that but he’s 22 uh he had a big triple today which I really liked out to Right Center slapped the ball the other way went off the wall which is very tough to get to here in Lancing because the gaps are very very deep because a soccer team shares the stadium with the lug nust there is a soccer team that played is in the Outfield grass so it’s quite wide the gaps because you got to fit a soccer field in there I I like where Ed’s head is at I like where his body is at he’s absolutely ripped um and that triple today told me a lot out to Right Center so I have no concerns about Ed still coming back from that hip and he’s gonna be fine one guy that I really kind of look at and we were talking about guys getting used to the cold Felix Stevens is a guy that I remember when I went to South Ben he is probably in the top three or four biggest bodies I’ve ever seen I mean it looks like the Bears should sign this guy I mean I’m just waiting for him to warm up and then look out the Bears should definitely sign this guy he could probably build the state new stadium in one day because he’s so massive he could just bring along all the bricks and get it done and he can play on Felix uh couple weeks ago if you I if I told you this at spring training cley there’s no way you would have believed me Felix Stevens to this point until now has never had a multi-home run game which looking at him you’re like what how is that possible he had his first career multi home run game a couple Saturday Saturdays ago in South Bend first one laser beam off the batter eye in South Bend which you know that’s difficult to do but even what’s harder to do is driving a ball craw that you’ve been to South Bend before over that bridge in right center that connects the center field Concourse out to the performance center Felix as a righty by the way hit one over the bridge in right center I have never seen a right-handed batter do that I’ve seen Matt mvis do that I’ve seen Owen Casey do that but they’re lefties never SE a right-handed batter do that it was his first career multi-home Run game and that was a Grand Slam by the way here in Lancing I kind of got his mojo back he was struggling the last week or so and I did notice today Crawley he has slightly changed his batting stance he is leaning back he’s putting less weight on his back foot and he has also moved his hands closer to his helmet used to move the hands kind of back here and hold it backwards um but the hands are now kind of closer to his right ear so less weight on the back back leg hands closer it’s a quicker swing and he’s going to hit a lot of home runs that way you know and one guy that you know I’m always just rooting for because he’s such a great guy and and you’ve known him for many years you got to see Brennan Davis come through on a rehab stint how did Brennan look to you when he was out there outstanding absolutely outstanding and and like you said this is a bit of a Sentimental type player because KY when you do this and I’m very gracious to be in my fifth year with South Ben I’m about to my 500th career game on Friday which is super exciting uh if you go back to the boisey days as well so to be around for 500 games I mean to me I I would have blushed if I was around for 50 you know so um but Brennan in terms of friends made in this business I he’s he’s right up with the best man I mean we had his aent Club 400 together with Cole Franklin obviously we wish Cole the best too because fortunately he got hurt but uh man that kills but um about Brennan man just such a good human being and to answer your question he looked terrific and I do think it had something to do with the fact the last two times that he’s come back to rehab in South Bend they were August of 22 and August of 23 here in August of 24 he didn’t miss much time from spring training I think only had about a week and a half off so he came back and looked super comfortable in his ability of taking pitches waiting for his pitch and driving the ball um in August the last number of years you could tell that he had been on the shelf for a while where he was just it was all about getting timing back that the timing wasn’t there and it was just a matter of getting that here timing was there and it was a matter okay I’m gonna you’re gonna make a mistake with a fast ball and I’m gonna I’m gonna punish you for it and that’s that’s exactly what happened he looked fantastic uh thought he had a great feel for the strike zone saw him play right field once as well and good to see him back at triple F now let’s kind of go to the pitching side which is has hasn’t really caught up to the hitting side yet when we look at the starters you got Drew gray and he’s he’s you know someone that’s interested to me you know he’s a 2021 uh third round pick but a good Lefty what are you seeing out of Drew gray so far Like Him First Midwest League inning in devonport Quad Cities on opening day he uh struck out the side in his first High inning finished that start with 6ks and you’ll like this Crawley he is wearing number 34 in South Ben which may remind you of another big Lefty that we love and know in Chicago Cubs Heritage so that guy was pretty okay uh Drew Gray tall slender Lefty is going to grow into that body um he’s still only 20 like you said he’s a Tommy John patient so he’s still kind of getting over that um he has yet to go over three innings in South Bend which which makes sense I mean that’s usually The Benchmark for a Tommy John guy but I I really like two variations he throws of his breaking ball he’s got a sharp fast ball developing change up and for me crawling a lefty could really take a jump and just like the other number 34 that we know when a lefty Masters a change up ooh baby he’s coming and I think Drew gray is right on that track um his pitching coach here in South B is Bruce Billings former big leager with the A’s and the Yankees and the Rockies so you get some big league experience there and I like what I’ve seen um kind of just a matter of of controlling the Zone maybe a little too many walks but that’ll happen with a young guy but I really like his start in Daven por on opening day same case with roas who Homer that day it was freezing wind was blowing in straight at his back not an easy night to pitch and he made the most of it yeah and it’s hard when these guys are coming back from injury to really you know for them to kind of really get into a comfort zone get in their routine one of the guys that’s coming back from injury he was our first guest ever our first player guest on fly the W is Tyler schlafer schla man it’s awesome to see him because he had pitched in South band in 2022 he made his high a debut with South Ben and immediately needed Tommy John surgery talk about a bummer because we went on the win the championship of course and I think about that starting rotation cwy Luis Des Cole Franklin Porter Hodge add to the list imagine if Tyler schlafer was a part of that I mean we won the championship we might blister through the Midwest League Championship at that rate because this is a kid that throws hard he’s still only 22 and what’s funny I I talked about this earlier with Mount Carmel Mount Carmel not nearly the Rival of Lincoln wayes that hwood Flossmore was I grew up playing at HF so he went to Homewood Flossmore a big rival from the Southside be it he’s a Southside kid grew up a Cubs fan that’s a green flag uh so you always got to like that and yeah I I like what he’s done I think Sunday was a huge step probably he has been the pretty much exclusive Sunday guy so far for the South Bend Cubs because there’s a six-man rotation so it just kind of rolls over and your day is your day so will Sanders has thrown on Wednesdays and Luis Des has thrown on Saturdays it’s been Sundays for Tyler Scher and in his start against the uh Quad City’s River Bandits at home last week he went the most Innings he has since Tommy Johnny went four was very good with a run allowed he only walked one struck out two hard thrower uh in the mid 90s and that’s only going to keep getting better because still like I said he’s only 22 he’s got many years now of service time experience and uh rooting for that guy because he is a Chicago Kid through and through and that’d be a fun story you mentioned Luis Des uh from that championship team and he’s back and and hopefully healthy and everything’s looking good with Lis yeah uh talking with him you know prob this is a this is a pretty cool story because Debbie is one of the nicest and most genuine people I think I’ve come across in this org just every time he sees you it’s a smile it’s a handshake it’s a how are you poppy one of those type of things which which is awesome but uh Debbie has made a huge huge Improvement on his English so when in 2022 uh it was you know it was somewhat minimal you know he could get by last year got better and now we’re having full conversation so when you are are meeting this guy um first and you they learn English and they Master English and they graduate from the English program it’s almost like meeting them all over again when they know English because you could talk about things that you really couldn’t talk about before which is awesome so talking with Debbie uh he says he feels 100% healthy but there is a bit of a road back because last year you know he got back to South Ben um you know he did struggle a little bit but again that was kind of getting over an injury I’m pretty sure he struggled with injury over the offseason too so it’s just a matter of getting back I will say among change UPS in the Y he’s probably got my favorite one it is a Vanishing change low and away that just disappears so rooting for him because he’s a great guy but if he could get back to half of what he was Crawley in 2022 he was the Cubs minor league pitcher of the year that year arguably the most dominant right-hander in the Cubs org uh he is going to be something special even like I said if you can get back to half of that yeah just a big part of that Championship run that South Ben went on is there any other arm that you’re looking at right now that maybe cup fans aren’t aware of that’s not getting all the big press that you kind of look at the stuff and you’re like there’s something special there well Brody McCulla starts tomorrow and Brody was hurt at the last year so he did not make his final start he’s back came out of the bullpen in his first appearance at beloe and then started last week versus Quad Cities really really really good um gave up a run in four Innings he was fabulous but I want to talk about the guy that started today Bry will Sanders fourth round pick out of South Carolina last year did not make his Pro debut last year his Pro debut was opening week this year he’s a tall Drake of water 6’6 slender lanky and skinny but he packs a punch I mean mid90s he’s got two variations of the fast ball he throws a slider and a curve as well as a change today probably the best we have seen him it was his longest career start at three and two-thirds Innings gave up a meaningless unearned run uh was not his fault at all and he struck out five so that means over his last two starts he has punched out 11 with only one walk which is huge because he was only able to last less than an inning in his second start because he just walked too many he’s quickly learning after a month at professional so um he is a intriguing Prospect because I I think for first of all he’s a physical specimen throws hard um yeah it’s one of those things where like they walk in from the bus when they come in from Arizona and these guys are getting off the bus like hey how are you good to see you hey and then this guy gets off the bus like oh my goodness like this guy’s a leg this guy’s legit six foot seven and he’s huge and he pitched in some important games for South Carolina over his career so like the look of will Sanders so far remember that name all righty and what about on the position side as far as position players is there somebody obviously Jefferson roa’s getting a lot of press but is there somebody that maybe just is getting Overlook that that people coming down to South Bend would be interested in you know what it has been a good start to the year Crawley for Ethan Hearn former sixth round pick Hearn is splitting time behind the plate with Casey Opitz Hearn today probably had his best day as a South Bend Cub ever he was here last year today went three for four with three runs scored a home run and an RBI and he’s batting 281 for a catcher at the modor league level that’s outstanding um Hearn had to repeat Cy Myrtle Beach twice so he was in Myrtle Beach had to go back then he was in South Bend last year and now repeats South Ben uh he’s first of all probably the funniest guy on the team if you pull anybody in the clubhouse he’s the funniest dude we we were at Wrigley Field a couple Mondays ago for a team workout you may have seen and the great Chris ha in the great Kaylee sedle the digital team for the South Ben Cubs miked up Ethan Hearn and Casey opit at Wrigley Field those videos are coming out soon by the way and it was straight up gold so uh as funny and as characterist as Ethan Hearn is he’s having a great start to the year which is awesome to see because again he was a six round pick he was a legitimate Prospect when he was drafted he still is but he also catches a solid game caught will Sanders today lik what you saw so Ethan Hearn slowly but surely getting better now you do have a new Skipper in town Nick lvll I mean you know Tory lll’s son it’s a great story what have you seen from him so far as far as being the skipper of this team such a friendly and composed and intelligent guy uh he is the youngest manager I’ve ever worked with he’s a year older than me so he’s 30 I’m 29 which is a little crazy for sure uh Lance ryl our former manager was 31 when he got the job so there’s this new wave of of young coaches and managing Talent that’s working its way through but I know you mentioned Tory lello being his dad I think what I respect most about Nick is that he did this on his own he got to this level on his own I’m sure there was a phone call at one point from Tory lll as a reference but there was no Tory lll call in the Chicago Cubs hey man can we can we get Nick in the driver’s seat no no no Nick lello went to the Tennessee Smokies a couple years ago to be their bench coach he was their third base coach last year he went to the complex league in Arizona and managed there so this isn’t a young guy just getting a job or any of that he he worked for this and the guy is passionate I mean a minor league playing career with the Red Soxs he gave it one last go in independent ball he played for both that he actually played for the Kane County Cougars former Cub affiliate now independent ball and then he played for the Juliet Slammers which is my hometown team uh went to Julet jackhammers back in the day growing up now the Juliet Slammers so he gave it one more go and then he was like you know what I want to stay in the game and um he’s been awesome to work with I think uh what was cool is talking with him at spring training about the Diamondbacks run to the World Series and about what you kind of study and pick up from your dad as you’re watching your dad manage in the World Series and he he’s met some awesome people along the way I know him and boo are close because Boo was doing the World Series radio and he was interviewing Tor every day so here’s Nick just in the middle of these Boo and uh Tory interviews so yeah he is a really smart dude I respect him a whole lot he’s been amazing to work with and you know like I said we uh we’re able to relate to one another because we’re literally the same age which is unique to say the least so I’m definitely not taking that for granted now I got to tell you BK one of my favorite things about going to visit all the minor league affiliates of the Cubs and and I I’m not being biased here the Cubs have the best Affiliates of all but it’s just the creativity when it comes to Promotions and if you’ve never been to Four Winds Fields it’s such a fun experience and you guys got a lot of fun things coming up May 7th pause and Claw nights you can bring your dog to the bar Park and enjoy white claws for just $4 quite the steal Thursday Thursdays are back select craft beers for only $4 and domestics for two you know I love that one of the big fun contests Spin to Win Club 400 came down one time too yeah down to four wins and we did pretty good on that spinning the wheel you could win a TV and and my wife actually won a TV no joke May 12th stainless steel wine glasses for the first thousand moms through the gate I I got to tell my wife about that one but and that you just had you have an awesome set of bobbleheads coming out Kevin Alcantara was the first one and it’s just you know it’s a lot of fun to go to these stadiums because you guys always just make it enjoyable and put on such a good show man that’s credit to the whole team but Chris hagstrom works so hard um Kaylee sedle myself Max Toma I think we make a great team and but that’s also big shout out to people like Joe hard and Nick Brown and Andy Francis the general manager staff and um everybody that makes a tick in South Ben like I said car this is my fifth year in South Ben I’ve been blessed to be here um it’s changed the comp complexion of my life I mean you you and I talk about this often man I mean my goal is to get to Wrigley just like the guys in the field but while I’m in South Ben I’m I’m enjoying every minute of it so yeah about the promotions um the weekly promotions we actually our first thirsty Thursday was on uh you’ll love this the first thirsty Thursday was Notre Dame senior day so every Notre Dame senior came out and a good 4500 people in the park and there were guys doing the nine inning hot dog beard challenge guys that got it done and then at the end everybody’s looking for an Uber and it’s chaos and like oh my God what’s going on um and then one of my favorite ones that’s going to come up Indie 500 night um as you know I’m I’m blessed enough to work the race and be part of that coverage so the n500 is bringing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway parts of it I guess to South Bend and there’s going to be cars and um and everything so would be a cool display coming up here soon but uh yeah I know I know everybody works hard especially with the spin to win that won the golden bobblehead for minor league baseball for best promotion and I know that means a ton to Chris and um you know I’ve it’s been a pleasure to be under his wing the last number of years and South Bend’s a special place so if anybody’s out there listening right now and fly to the W or 670 or wherever it’s uh it is a bucket list item for sure if you are a Cubs fan absolutely I cannot wait to get back down there BK where can our listeners follow your work and keep up with the Southbend Cubs yeah hit me with a follow on Twitter thanks cley bking Sports Instagram is Brendan King show and you can listen every day online if you’d like it’s WSBT radio in South Ben the games are available on the internet every night and uh we’re finishing up this series in Lancing again big game tomorrow um Jefferson roas if he gets a hit it’ll tie the longest hitting streak for South bin Cub ever and if he gets a hit then on Friday that would be 18 and that would take a new record passing Al likes of Eloy jenez I’m looking forward to it BK I’m also looking forward to seeing you down at South Bend my friend thank you for joining you got it thanks brother appreciate you all right you are listening to the fly the W 670 podcast Season 3 Episode 36 Cubs mediocre against the Mets but they’re coming home to beautiful Wrigley Field don’t forget to download don’t forget to subscribe hey why don’t you leave Crowley and I one of those five star reviews so Crowley the Cubs are on the way home as we are recording this and they are going going to be hosting the Brewers let’s take a look at the standings yep Milwaukee in first place at 1911 the Cubs are at 19 and 13 Cincinnati 16- 15 in third place 3.5 back St Louis is out of the basem at 14- 17 and Pittsburgh what a fall Dustin down to 14 and 18 unbelievable that’s it’s unbelievable that’s okay I mean you know whatever now as far as the roster moves injury report Justin steel made his First Rehab start in Iowa on Wednesday I watched that it was you watch Alex Cohen during lunch uh steel allowed three runs on six hits in 3.1 Innings he gave up one walk and struck out four he threw 63 pitches pitches 41 for them strikes his first inning he gave up three straight singles one of them was okay but the rest were pretty weak singles after easing back into the swing of things uh steel struck out the fourth batter he faced Omaha managed four hits and two runs in the first inning alone but after that he kind of locked it in he gave up one run and walk one walk the rest of his outing steel said quote I felt like I was a little rusty in the beginning started getting the rust off as I started throwing more pitches but you know Dustin because it was a hamstring injury he was able still to do some arm work and so he’s not you know he doesn’t have a lot of arm fatigue like you would normally right right yeah I think his next start should be uh up here at Wrigley Field early next week against the Padres and uh Carter Hawkins hinted to that a little bit today with mully and HW yeah and then you know I just think that it really depends on how his if his body feels good if there’s nothing Punky I think he’ll probably be up yep it makes sense you can you know throw your throw your 60 pitches at the federal Landmark instead of out in Iowa now some other big news Kyle Hendricks is making his first start today for the Tennessee Smokies that’ll be happening in about an hour from when we’re recording this and then the big news that cup fans got when they from on Tuesday from the friend of the Pod Tommy Birch is that number one Prospect Cade Horton was promoted to Iowa he is one step closer to Wrigley Field these are the numbers that Marquee put up he’s pitched 16 Innings 16.1 Innings ER of 1.10 whip of 0.92 18 strikeouts to two walks love the 18-2 I I love that I love 18 18 K to one or two W’s that’s fantastic now Hawkins did like try to tap the breaks out this just said listen he’s he’s done everything he can do at the Double a level so the next stop is the triaa level it doesn’t mean that he’s being fast-tracked to come up to Clark and Addison no here’s what Carter had to say on the Molly and haw show about this a promotion standpoint especially with guys that you know are quote unquote our priority players you know the question about whether to promote someone is not typically having to do with our need at the big leagues it’s what’s the best environment for this player to continue to improve and we felt like that was triaa for Kate at this point we felt like the competition level was going to be a little bit better for him there to continue to help him develop and execute the way that we know he’ll need to be able to do to be able to be dominant in the big leagues which is the ultimate goal so again he’s going to sit there and and as much as we are screaming for Bullpen guys they don’t it’s it’s about what’s best for Cade and I like that so we have a big Series this weekend at home Cubs versus Brewers uh the Cubs and Brewers play each other 13 times last season with the Brewers winning the season series 7 to6 but Dustin it was a classic I94 dog fight and they’ve had quite the uh they’ve had quite the off season they had quite a few changes up there north of the cheddar curtain beginning right with the uh with the skipper coming south of the cheddar you can even go higher than that David Sterns became the head of uh the Met Bas that’s true right he walked first right he walked first and then you thought that he was going to take council with him to New York right right and so that’s what everybody assumes but then he turns it down Jed Hoyer swoops in and gives him a big old fiveyear $40 million contract making him the highest paid manager in baseball now the Brewers promoted council’s Mentor good friend Pat Murphy and kept the rest of the staff together the biggest splash the Brewers made in the off season was during spring training when they traded Corbin Burns to the Orioles for two young Major League ready prospects from that deep deep ball Baltimore system pitcher DL Hall and third baseman Joey Ortiz they also signed their top prospect Jackson Cho to the biggest contract ever for a player that has not played in the major leagues 10 years 142 that was still a crazy one that’s a that’s a head scratcher and they also they also added the guy that I really wanted to be at first base for the Cubs and that was ree Hopkins yep you got ree Hoskins Who the Cubs were looking at and they also picked up Swingman Jacob junis and then besides losing Burns The Brew said goodbye to Rowdy tles who always hit good against the Cubs but struggled last year Carlos Sana and Mark canana two guys they picked up at the trade deadline that help them out so Dustin you’re thinking to yourself okay no Sterns no council no Corbin burns the Brewers are toast right nope they keep rolling along yeah they keep finding Skippers like the Packers keep finding quarterbacks Yep they’re in first place in the NL and like most other teams injuries have affected them they are we they knew they would be without Brandon Woodruff but now they have DL Hall is out um he came in the Corbin Burns trade he has a left knee spray and he won’t pitch in the series against the Cubs Jacob junis who they signed the off season has shoulder injuries scary moment he also got hit in the neck by a ball during BP if you remember that uh former Cub Wade Miley needs Tommy John surgery he’s done for the year Devin Williams are All-Star closer has two stress fractures in his back and is expected to be out at least until the All-Star break so they’re as banged up they’re as banged up as the Cubs if not worse right and Christian Yelich has a lower back strain yet they keep winning Dustin they got a lot of young talented players William contas can hit like his brother but he’s a much better Catcher And framer they got a bunch of young prospects like Jackson chrio Tyler black just got called up in Sal freck the Brewers just wrapped up a series with the Rays and it was a wild one the Rays won the first game one nothing on a controversial call Jake Bowers another youngster was called up for back swing interference on a strike three swing and so the Brewers won on or the raised one on that one the second night there’s a big fight Pat Murphy ejected couple beanballs words exchange and a fist fight Brewers won that game eight to2 and then today was the or yesterday was rather calm they won seven to one and took the series from the Rays but Pat Murphy will not be managing in Chicago on Friday because he has to serve the second game of the suspension and Dustin this kind of to me was a little bit shaky uh they had a couple guys that were eject did um pitchers Abner urbe who they sent to the miners so when he comes back up he’s suspended but I don’t think you should be able to put him in the miners before the suspension served and then Freddy Peralta’s appealing his he scheduled to go Sunday but we’ll see what happens with the appeal yeah I’m hoping that he uh he misses that one and as you said Pat Murphy also won’t be on the bench on Friday either but he will be with Molly and Hall tomorrow at 9:15 oh nice well now in game one where he’s not going to be Hayden wnis is taking on Joe Ross Hayden wesneski made a second start of the Season versus the Brewers Hayden 2-0 with a 0 87 ER he did phenomenal in his debut against Arizona coming out of the bullpen throwing four scoreless Innings he threw his next appearance was 2.1 scoreless Innings out of the pen against Houston on 425 he made his first start of the Season against Boston going four Innings and giving up one run on five hits ree Hoskins had two it back has two at bats and Willie Adamas has one but nobody else has really seen Hayden Joe Ross Joe Ross for the Brewers yeah he’s a veteran right-hander who played with the Nationals from 2015 to 2021 uh he’s thrown a combined 17 Innings over the last two seasons none of them at the major league level he had a second Tommy John surgery Dustin you’re seeing these guys come back from that which is wild to me uh but the Brewers decided to roll the dice on him he’s one and three with a 540 erra and five starts he has 20 three strikeouts and 25 Innings pitch but also 12 walks now Dustin he’s been Boomer bust he’s given up either a lot of runs or no runs he’s given up six earned runs in two starts and three earned runs combined in the other three outings he throws a slider Sinker and four seamer Dansby Swanson is five for 13 with two doubles and a homer against Ross and Ian and hap is two for eight with a home run well I like uh I like I like how this sets up a little bit I like the fact that Joe Ross has some control issues yep and but hopefully it’ll be one of those bad games because he has had some good games now in game two Jameson tyion versus Tobias Meers taona is making his fourth start of the Season he’s two and0 with a 150 erra with nine KS and 18 Innings pitch he started three games he’s only given up a single run in each of those against Miami Houston and the Mets in his last start against the Mets he went all the way into the eth inning Willie adamus is one for eight and reys Hoskins is one for four against tyone but both both guys they only have one hit but they were both home runs off of J Willie conteras is two for five and Sal freck is two for three now Tobias Meers was drafted in 2016 he’s bounced around the majors and the Brewers picked him up after the white socks released him in 2022 must he be how mad must he be if the White Sox were letting you go he yeah and he only was in Charlotte he didn’t even make it up to that big league club uh Myers made his major league debut on April 23rd and gave up only one run on four hits in five innings of work against the Pirates in his second start he gave up four runs in five innings against the Yankees he throws a four seamer cutter an occasional slider and curveball but the Cubs have not seen him before all right no problem I I like again I like I like this pitching matchup as well let’s move into game three we know Javier Assad will be throwing is Freddy Peralta gonna be throwing in this one is he going to appeal is he gonna miss this start will he miss the next start I wonder he’s appealing it he’s appealing it it’s just a question of when they hear it right so at this point unless they hear it tomorrow probably don’t work on the weekends right so he’s he’s probably throwing on Sunday afternoon well let’s keep our fingers cross uh we talked about Javier how good he’s been best ER over the year he’s 2-0 at the 197 he struck out 27 batters in 32 Innings pitch he’s given up one run in each of his last three starts against the Marlins the Astros the Mets none of the Brewers have more than two at bats against Assad Freddy Peralta like we said we’ll see what happened he’s three and0 with the 321 erra with 45 K and 33.2 innings he struggled two starts ago against the Pirates giving up five runs in 4.2 Innings but he got back on track against the struggling Rays who you saw how bad they were against the white socks um he went 5.1 Innings and only gave up one run before getting ejected for hitting a batter the Cubs don’t hit Peralta well but if there’s one guy who definitely should get the day off it’s Ian hap Dustin he’s one for 20 against Peralta Swanson’s 0 for eight magical and wisdom one for seven the team slashes 118 212 and 211 against Peralta he’s mainly a fastball slider guy but this is going to be a tough one yeah that will be that will be a tough one so we’ll see what ends up happening as far as the suspensions go all right hot notot we uh know kind of the Cubs who’s hot and not I mean hot like is anybody hot on offense P PCA talkman right is 16 for 46 so he’s slashing 348 464 630 Nico is 18 for his last 161 slashing 295 328 383 PCA is doing pretty good but you really got to take a look here at Ian hap he is five for his last 36 he’s slashing 139 295 and he slugging 167 that’s your number three hitter Dustin can’t happen not good enough not good enough so hopefully we can kind of get the you know hopefully Ian can get moving but I don’t know how much longer they can keep him in three spot right all right and uh how about for the Brewers who do we Cub fans have have to look out for look out for T um Tyler black he just got called up three for seven small sample size but they really are high on this kid Joey Ortiz they got in the Corbin Burns train he’s five for 15 reys Hoskins five for 17 Willie adamz is six for 21 but he has three home runs and 10 RBI in the last seven days um on the on the notot list so much Jackson chrio three for last 17 and South freck two for his last 18 those were two the guys that they really you know those are the two star pieces as far as young guys and then Blake Parkins is their center fielder he’s four for their last 24 all right and um how’s Willie conteras doing will cont he’s doing 16 for his last 23 with three RBI so he’s slashing 261 308 381 all right so got to look out for him as well all right we ready to make some predictions yeah I’m going to say that the Cubs are going to take two or three I think they do have an advantageous pitching match up and let’s see what happens with um with Freddy perala but I think they need some home cooking they’ve been gone a long time it’s going to be nice to get in their bed to relax and hopefully that’s what they need absolutely I’m with you two out of three I’m not exactly sure I like the Saturday game for sure I like the Saturday game for the uh for the Cubs for sure I’m not quite sure about the rest really quick before we uh before we sign off on this one just curious what do you do this weekend as a Cubs fan are you cheering for the white socks or you cheering for the Cardinals who do you want to win when the socks go down to St Louis um I’m always unless you know unless the postseason is really on the line I’m always going to say I want the Cardinals to lose because it affects the Cubs more all right very good all right that is a wrap don’t forget to download don’t forget to subscribe don’t forget to listen don’t forget to follow us on all the socials Facebook Instagram Twitter you can email Cubs may not make playoffs because of their bullpen. It sucks so bad
Busch has to do a better job catching. Dunston type throws from all the infielders he's been dropping too many balls that were outs.
Crawly is wrong on the letter of the law, which is why it stood as out.
