Today’s Notes – raw clips John & Ivan

I’ve been recording notes for myself the last few years to keep records on the boards and fins I ride. They have been super helpful as a way to organize those thoughts, and give feedback to Pyzel or the team at Futures. It instantly improved our design process when we could add a visual record to the feedback I give them. It also became a big part of my competitive process, going back through different sessions to choose which boards I pack for tour, or what I choose to ride in a heat based on conditions. And an added way to get feedback from someone like Ross. As we kept recording them, it developed into a way to test other kinds of gear as well, whether that’s sample boardshorts for Florence, or something like a new pad design with Veia. I thought it would be fun to share a few of them just to show the process. Also, this was my first dad surf. Pretty stoked on that!

ready yeah uh okay well pre fun waves I’m going to ride my red tiger with the cold in tail um and my focus right now is really just on fins I got some new large Tech Flex fins they have um they’re a little stiffer um but they have the techx flex for them and comparing to like the glass ones I’ve kind of been riding this year which are also stiffer uh so just going to kind of see which ones are better I I think I like the techbook better um but yeah we’ll assess that and then I also am testing these new our new two ones it’s a big test session today uh I’ve been wearing these last couple days they’re really good this outside material is pretty cool it’s like uh just crazy thin um and like you couldn’t wear it without out uh a double in the liner inside most people wear a liner anyway and it’s really comfortable uh yeah this is the power tiger too and just buring on Flow first day first surf first dad surf so I’m tired but get the water and your pumping wait [Music] spee [Music] foree [Music] fore [Music] fore [Music] [Music] spee [Music] [Music] for spee [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] for [Music] la la la [Music] [Music] foree [Music] for foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] C good uh okay so um had a fun quick little session and I rode these Tech flexes first and I thought they felt slow but I actually think um that they were pretty good after I was feeling a little tired but and then I went to the glass after that and the glass were definitely felt a little faster but less like drivey and uh smooth so um I think I got to try it one more time but the tech Flex felt pretty good I think it was the winner so far waves really fun um and yeah I don’t know was Stu like had really good timing on a couple which is kind of what I was looking for just to kind of like be patient and have a good timing um but always working toward something and yeah so I’m stoked s that bite someone took out of us you called me to check the set right when I took a little nibble huge bite I’m the fastest eater in all the out there in two hours when I finished with my bar I take a bite and digest it before I take another bite smart more you know science says to do that are these no put on this table okay I’ll grab them theard what’s this session all about okay this session I think I’m going to do the fin test again the same as earlier um R same Bo and I’m focusing [Applause] on timing patience at the bottom and timing that’s my focus of session just about timing I don’t care if I do one turn or three turns that time them good and the appropriate power for the appropriate section that’s Ian what are you working on this session um uh can I get low show us wi my St and I’m going to get low yeah show us you’re going to turn through your [Applause] core me and Eric we both agreed that your turns the ones you did are they look good Ian are they on there still why can we show up mhm see no but not even noticeably like you can’t really see it like I felt like I was squatty right there right isn’t that crazy like you so you don’t even need to go that low but I was just trying to tell you like watch you don’t even you won’t look that low okay timing timing this is right oh let’s go circles circles I yeah wi in the sense just for back just for like backside I yeah backside you are super cruy yeah sit sit a little lower and a little wider and you get way more drive and like power from it that’s why gab and those guys are so good on their backside because they just I just watched you guys do thing EO was launching launching he’s a launcher huh he’s a launcher I was just talking to R so he was saying like all his free shs he’s just doing that but then in the heat he’s just like surfing too safe and he’s not surfing like how good he really is yeah it’s like with most people I feel like that’s competition that’s competition in a nutshell that’s competition you just have to catch waves and you get eight I’ve been on this thing lately where I like to catch one wave aat one will do do eh these wait they count two AES yeah what the hell you can catch more than one how I us just tell guys one the good ones and then I go on the lon I had to Heats in a row where I sat there for 30 minutes and didn’t C away I watched I was like this aging I was like this there’s there’s a I was at was it after you came in the first time just was it B and I was like there a bar go I’m at the pipeline I’m at pipeline barreling laugh my ass I think it was after this one are you going to swap fins do you want to do you want to have FS out there no it’s fine it’s so close in I got firing earlier okay Ian here you go look yeah he looks down at his feet I look down and he gets he gets involved it’s not a super good way but just watch the Power right here wax on wax off buddy you know the deal Fanning gave me a little coaching years ago he was telling me stay in the circle and he said right where the waves breaking like right in this area is where the most powerful part of the wave is and he’s like that’s going to help you in the grindy stuff

  1. It's amazing to me that in 2024 Pyzel , a leading progressive shaper, is still using the " Brewer Rail".
This was a huge innovation of the 1970's.
The fat rounded soft down rail was actually faster than a hard sharp down rail , and did not catch a rail when you were doing a turn off the lip.
Dick Brewer was a genius designer and a meticulous craftsman.
JJF and Pyzel are benefitting from Brewer's creation here 50 years later.

  2. Watching JJ compete is amazing and something that amazes me even more is how good he is creating content. I genuinely could hear him speak about surfing for hours and hours. He’s not just this amazing talent, probably the peak versatility of a power surfer and his knowledge on surfing all around is out of this world.
I would really love to see him win a 3rd world title (has a solid chance this year, my finals prediction is JJ vs Ethan) but I’m also really looking forward to seeing him doing something similar to Nate and developing the Florence brand.
Really well done John, you are really a one of a kind. Get that title! 🏆

  3. @John John Florence ive got a few sets of fins id like you to try ply wood and glass been surfing and making fins for 30 years my step father is a pioneer of victorian surfing

  4. JJF was the ultimate chosen one as a grom on the north shore, back then everyone knew and said “ this kid is future champ” can’t wait to see this happen again with his little “boy or girl” I haven’t heard yet. 🤙🏼

  5. That board LOVED the first fins for sure. Loved that rocket kick off the tail!!! I'd love to ride that board of yours John!! Nothing like being a dad❤🤙

  7. The absolute best surfing dad in the whole wide world. I love the music choices in JJF videos. (oh, also enjoy watching one of the best surfer of all time bar none…)

  8. It's interesting that even though Martin Potter didn't take any wave prisoner, he did look in sync trajectorally whilst 'taking to the air'.

  9. Congratulations JJF family. How good is this kid gonna be with Dad and 2 uncles teaching how to surf? The legacy continues!

  10. You looked tired until you hit the water– it injects you with energy. Fun video and many good wishes to your new little family, hope Lauryn is well. I don't know how you tolerate all the crappy waves, biased judges and restrictions of wsl anymore. It has stopped being fun somewhere along the way
