Left side uh is what you want in a leadoff hitter a guy that’s going to bat in front of your best hitters a guy that’s going to get on base a lot whether that’s walks base hits whatever um and I mean he has 20 home run plus
Potential then he’s done like last two years I want to say um he definitely did it this last season so I like the move of leading him off now against righties it may be like maybe Nico is a better or not against right against left-handed pitchers as far if you’re doing a
Right-handed heavy lineup maybe Nico is a guy you want leading off but obviously um you know having the lead off spot is pretty good and start the season it doesn’t have to be all year let’s start with it and see how it goes well like you said and it’s what we talked about
And it’s funny because like the people that like I don’t know how how much it overlaps but like people that didn’t want hap in the third hitting number three last year and then people that just don’t think Hap’s a good hitter like if you wanted him off the number

Runs created plus above League average every single year and had the highest on base percentage on the team last year he gets on base he’s a good baseball player okay so I love this um and I agree I think Nico will probably get some opportunities in the leadoff spot
Against left-handed pitching um will this hurt Nico Horner’s ability to perhaps surpass 40 stolen bases again I necessarily think so but again like I guess so in some aspects just because you know he start there were so many games last year where he’d start the game with a hit and then steal second
Base right and so there might be scenarios now because I think against right-handed pitching Nico is going to be hitting like fifth or sixth most likely sixth um and when he comes up there possibly could be people on base already but the thing is is that Nico
Was one of the best clutch hitters for the Cubs last year so I like Nico hitting in that fifth or sixth hole because he drove in runs last year uh better than I think what many casuals might think so um I like the idea of Nico you know fifth sixth or seventh you
Know what I mean in the lineup and against lefties probably batting first um unless Ian hap gets back to hitting like he did in 2022 against left-handed pitching when he was from the right side of the plate that was his like one year as a right-handed hitter where you’re
Like oh wow he improved on this he got better at this but then took a massive step back last year from the right side of the plate so I don’t know what to expect there but again the the Cubs are going to face more right-handed pitchers than left-handed pitchers just because
There’s more right-handed pitchers in the league so you’re going to see him at lead off more often than not and I I just think it’s I think this move by Craig council is it’s great because you’re again it’ll probably be ha say Bellinger your three best players at the
Top of the lineup you want your you want your three best players to get the most of bats that’s just a fact of the matter yeah I’m not going to give him like tons of credit for making the move because if the entire fan base is saying it it
Seems like it was a pretty obvious move but like okay we’re off to a good start I think it’s unanimous everybody sitting here thinks hap is going into the season the right choice for lead off to begin the season now the other thing that happened yesterday late was Jordan M
Gomery signed with the Diamondbacks and he’s been sitting out there and we’ve kind of thrown out the idea like will the Cubs go over the threshold will they will they spend that money now and do it and I know Brendan has said in there like listen if they’re an 84 85 86 win
Team is it really worth now doing that because is that guy going to take you I don’t know but basically they got him for two years $50 million right like he can opt out $25 million and I know that the Cubs finished one game behind the Diamondbacks last year yeah and I know
That they were expected by most people to finish like one game ahead of the Cubs again this year there’s six playoff spots Diamondbacks are only projected for 84 wins some some people have them not that high but they’re in a tough division yeah let’s let’s put it this

Think he is the best offensive shortstop in Major League Baseball I don’t remember like stats-wise if anyone had better stats average he led baseball I think so I think he let him like outs above average defensive run save I didn’t I didn’t haven’t looked it up
Right now but um no I mean he plays Elite level defense like best best in the league or at least near best in the league defense at shortstop and I honestly expect a season more on and I’m not expecting him to put up like a 130
Plus 100 or WRC plus season but like you go back two years ago he had a 116 WRC plus his last season with Atlanta he got a All-Star nod then and playing while also playing Elite defense last year um he I know the this he slumped a little
Bit more towards the end and that hurt his numbers but like his numbers were lower than what he had in that last season Atlanta but he still played elite elite defense was the leader and all that stuff and he made an All-Star team um you know last season a second
Straight All-Star I look at it as we’re still going to get the exact same Elite defense that he provides a shortstop but like now that he’s had a full year under his belt with the Cubs so when you’re talking about transitioning from the organization you’ve basically been with
Your entire pro ball career and not even just that like the stuff you have to transition to going from a team that plays a lot more night games to a team that plays a lot more day games like you’re talking about just the general routine how you’re doing things you know
He’s talked about that too yeah he’s talked about that so like all that’s for sure behind him now he’s gotten the full year um I think stuff like that can just help him in in various ways so I I do expect a better overall offensive season

I got a bad feeling going into this season. Probably doesn’t count for much, but a lot of our spring producers got sent down and our main lineup guys are cold. Put a cold bat in the cold weather, I don’t know if I see that adding up to much. Add to that the harshness of the April schedule. I’ll be watching this peeking through my hands.
Just going off last season, if the baseline is 83, Counsel should be worth 2 more. If Busch provides literally 0 WAR at 1B, he adds 2 wins just in replacing Hosmer and Mancini. If he's 2 WAR, that's 4 wins. If there's just slight growth throughout the rest of the team, there's the 90 wins.
