Hey well once kind of a short hitter Rory mooy has turned himself into a veritable Beast off the tea averaging well over 320 yards per drive right after this let’s talk about one of the keys he uses to smash the ball so far you can do this you can copy this one

Thing that he does and you can get much more power out of it too stay tuned hey this is Steve with hit it longer. comom I continue my journey to hit the ball longer and straighter than I ever have before and I hope to show

You how to do it too all right so I remember when Rory maroy CA first came up on tour he was a young kid I remember seeing one of his trackman reports in the very early days of trackman typical swing was about 108 M

An hour so he was about 5 m an hour slower than the average player on tour really amazing how good he was despite being shorter than average however Everything’s changed since then you can see through putting on some muscle and really filling out his body working on speed training that

He is now swinging anywhere from 120 M an hour all the way up to the upper 120s if he really needs it hitting the ball well over 320 yards on average which means that if you just walked up and say hey Rory hit a drive for me probably

Would be hitting it closer to 340 or 350 that’s kind of the way the averages work on the PGA tour golfers on tour have a little bit more in reserve that they don’t often use and the average tend to be skewed a little bit lower cuz sometimes golfers don’t use it the

Driver off the t’s where they’re measuring distance so a 320 plus average is really really long all right so this is something we’ll see best from this face on angle I want you to take a look at Rory hitting a driver from the face on and what I really love about this

Video even more than the swing itself is how he’s got the fence post the metal fence post in the background so you can really measure what his body and hips are doing rela to these posts so watch as he gets the club to the top of the Swing here

How almost in the last frame right before the club pauses he starts to make a rather large and aggressive leral shift towards the target you can see how he really closes in on that next pole in front of his hip I’m using I love this chair because

You’ve got the slats on it where we can can really get a feel for the side to side movement of the hips so here I’ve got at the beginning about a a handpan as I wind into my right side I have increased that Gap almost to double

Get loaded up on the right side and now we’re going to crash down and pivot the whole pelvis to where I am balancing on the outside of my left foot that’s what he’s doing it’s a fairly large and early lateral shift of the left hip that

Really sets the table for this big hit you see what this does is sure it might give him a little bit of forward momentum but that’s linearly that’s not a lot but what it’s doing here is as he crashes down onto this left foot and completely centers his

Pelvis on top of the left foot it’s enabling him to create so much push down into the ground through his left foot that it’s going to have a tendency to make your body turn faster you can turn faster this way and that’s going to speed up your arms speed up your hands

Too so the move for him it’s going to be a good at least s in that he’s moving not just but with starting position to where he ends up through the Impact Zone it might be 9 10 11 in of distance from where he is at the top of

The Swing so it is a lateral shift towards the target it’s not a turn in a barrel if you ever want Power you’re not going to get it by turning inside a barrel I want to take my left hip and I want to crash through the barrel as I

Rotate just like that now a couple things to keep in in mind a couple of asterisks in your bid to lateral shift you can’t lateral shift towards right center field or come off the chair or move the pelvis towards the ball this is going to wreck the power and the

Accuracy of the Swing but instead you’ve got to keep this butt line constant as you drive through or or even increase it he’s done a very good job of keeping his butt back as he’s gotten longer and not falling under the Trap of early extension trying to hump it to and

Attempt to get more power that’s going to sap your power instead so the other thing that we’re after is the sequence you’ll note again that the swing down swing starts with the big lateral shift almost to the point where it triggers the down swing so a lot of you out there who have

A hard time hitting the ball long getting Club head speed uh even affects your ball striking on the turf as well is that you’re starting your down swing with the arms moving downwards or uncocking the club or both you’ll notice Rory is comfortably in his Left Post while

The club is still near the top of the Swing the club shaft has almost not Advanced the shift is first first post the left hip and rotate just like Rory’s doing that’ll get you set up in the slot where you can really turn on the hands and

Arms from there so the lateral shift has got to be done in sequence in correct form with the butt back for you to take advantage of it but then when you can make this move boy are you going to hit the crap out of it now let’s see if I can

Demonstrate you’re going to see about a handspan showing at a dress I’ll increase it as I load into my back leg and then I’m going to completely cover the chair early in the downswing you’re going to see the chair disappear as I in sequence pivot To the Left Post here we

Go now taking a look back at that in the slow-mo you can see again the sequence is there first thing I’m doing is I’m posting the left hip aggressively depends on your hip structure and how wide your feet are but’ll be between 5 and 7 in or so but very

Aggressive ha like a like a karate move is this as if your left hip bone was like a karate chop and you’ve got some boards right here wh that you’re going to slam right through that’s what Rory is doing here this is why he’s starting to hit the ball so prodigiously long and

You will too when you learn how to do this one move I would practice it on a chair first without a club or a ball load up and Wham karate chop through the plywood Wham cover up that chair Let the Body rotate right away just like that I

Think you’ll start seeing your drives get quite a bit further out there past all your buddies hey leave me a comment if this helped you if you have any questions if you want to see more content like this of course hit like And subscribe help me get over 100,000

  1. Good points BUT I question that Rory was ever a short hitter. Even when he broke through on the European tour as a teenager he hit it miles. Yes he has bulked up but even in the early days of his PGA tour career he could over power courses with his driving.

  2. Thank you very much, Steve, for one more great tip, I have been following your advice and that lead to improvement. Yet, with this tip I have had problems. When I am aggressively using my hip the way you describe, and I am not extending, I end up with a push. It's a long push, because of this move, but it is a push. The only way I can avoid it is by what you call here, "turning in a barrel" and indeed it saps the power. So how do I make this aggressive move and not push the ball?

  3. How do you maintain a feeling of connectivity if your hips get to Ahead of your upper body?

  4. good tip but when I try to drive my legs and hit forward, my left knee gets past my left ankle sometimes it seems like I’m too far ahead and then I get flippy

  5. Great video. But Chuck Quinton says now, that there are t w o totally different swing possibilities: the left and the right side dominant. You discribe the left side dominant, posting up on the left leg. But you can create the same effect of lateral move and rotation by pushing off the right foot clockwise and active releasing the right hand (throwing motion), as Quinton recommends.
    What do you think?

  6. I think you're missing an important subtle move with Rory's swing. Yes..he drives left early; but there is a subtle counter move with the lower body back towards the right that adds a powerful sling to the club through impact,…like flicking a towel to snap it.

  7. To’ me it looks more like pushing back the left hip by using the force generated on the left foot/leg after the shift forward at the top of back swing . If you look Rory at the top of his back swing he “pauses” a tiny bit and after shifting he squats. The start of the down swing is led by the left leg stretching backwards
