In this video i’m going to teach you how to take advantage of the wide, narrow, wide golf swing that all great players use to hit flush iron shots every time.
If you don’t strike or compress the irons as well as you would like then this is a must watch as this technique allows you to strike down on the ball, compress those iron shots and hit solid golf shots every time
You are going to need just 3 simple steps that can be used together to learn this technique and start hitting the best iron shots of your life
Hope you enjoy, Chris

Even that’s a little short I explain long today into the wind that felt great off the face the strike was good it felt compressed and actually that’s one of those shots that you really enjoy hitting and I’m going to teach you how to do it and you’re going to get that
Through learning the wide narrow wide swing technique and there’s only three simple steps which I’m going to teach you to enable you to do that so what is this technique and why is it important well it really helps us kind of land the club where we need to Target side of the
Golf ball we know that great players do that all the shots that we hit from the ground so the majority are going to be your irons we have to have this descending blow you can see that I took a divot because my low point was Target side of the ball if you’re struggling
With your iron you often don’t get that your low Point can be kind of where the ball is or maybe even back of the ball and it’s because of the Swing shape that you have when we look at great players they have this very distinctive pattern to their swing when we look at
Their back swing and specifically we’re looking at the club head here it’s very very wide in the back swing so you can see how far that club is away from me in the down swing it’s much narrower you can see that and then on the way through it’s very wide in
This first kind of three four maybe 5et post impact that’s what generally we see there aren’t many that don’t fall into that category now if you videoed your Go sing or if you haven’t maybe pause this video go and video it and come back you’re probably not going to see that
It’s not uncommon to see someone who really struggles with those irons to actually be somewhere here on the back swing on the way down they might be wider and then on the through swing they’re actually narrower so they actually go narrow wide narrow and that does two things it really takes away
Your ability to strike it well takes away your ability to compress the ball and it means that you’re kind of capping the distance you can hit the ball when you start to learn this wide narrow wide technique you’re going to start to unlock so many better things in your
Golf game so this all starts in the first part of the golf S I set up to the golf ball and give or take that club head is as far away from my chest as it can be my arms are pretty straight so I can’t really create any more width so I
Start with width the issue is that for many of you you will lose that width almost instantly so that club has moved you know only really into the takeaway position but just look what my arms have done I’ve lost that width already why was that the case well I didn’t use the
Body I used too much of the hands and the arms now what’s connected to the golf club your hands so if you’re going to move the club how do you do that well it makes sense that you’d use your hands your arms they’re connected so why would
We not just use the hands and the arms well this is the reason because we lose that width early on width is key in the golfing we’ve all got to have it so if you lose it early on you’re going to try and regain it where would you regain it
Right as you start down which is the worst part to have width so really what I’d love you to do is start with this little simple exercise take the golf club pop the grip of the club into your belly button Trail hand is going to go
Down on the metal take your setup and just rehearse a little takeaway movement where I’m maintaining this relationship but look what has to happen for me to do that because I had that reference point here and the connection point there for me to move that club instantly without
Even having to think about it I use my shoulders you can see a lot more of my chest look at how my hips have turned look at how much my knees have turned already now I didn’t consciously do that but if I didn’t move my legs and my
Torso I’d have to do this I’d have to make this weird movement here with my right arm bends so by keeping this pretty straight keeping this in place and this in place we start to engage the body we start to rotate the body and that’s key to the goaling the body has
To get moving early that’s enabling me to keep the width here and always reaching out to this point here you know tiger Rory all of these great golfing that we look at and just amazed at they all do this they all have this really nice wide takeaway early on so that’s
Your little exercise and then when you go ahead and hit shots just go ahead and feel out the grip points at your belly button for as long as you can so I’ve got the grip pointing at my belly button and as I move into my takeaway look at
That it still points back at my belly button because I’ve got rot ation through my knees my hips and my arms are still got their structure so this is really going to take care of that sort of wide takeaway position how do we then create the narrowing on the ding well
That’s to do with what your body does how your body starts to shift towards the target creates the narrowness now because I want you to be able to go ahead and do this on the golf course rather than giving you a drill trying to give you a kind of concept A
Visual something you can think about which is really going to help imagine when I take a setup to this golf ball I’m stood in a doorway so the doorway would come outside of my legs and around and above my head what I really want you to sort of feel and
Sense in the down sing is that as you transition from back swing to downwing your lead thigh so maybe top of knee thigh and hip are going to collide with the inside of that door Fring so we’re going to make this wide move here and as
We start to set the wrists and complete I would feel like I move into to the inside of that door frame now what that will do naturally is it will create a narrower ding so you can see how my club head here is much closer to me or closer
To the ball if you want to use that as a reference compared to what it was in the takeaway I went wider to narrower and it was because of a little bit of resist set but more because of what my body was doing now what’s really
Interesting in the goaling is if you are narrow in the back swing even though you’re only looking at the first three to four feet because you’re narrow I would suggest that you’re going to find it incredibly hard to get your weight forward why is that the case well the
Club weighs a little bit it’s got some weight to it so if I’m narrow here where do I try and create the width early in the downwing when I try and push that club head out and away from me what does it do to my
Body it forces it back and up so if I’m really narrow here I might think well if I can shift towards that door frame I’m going to get away with it it’s really difficult because the narrower you are you go wide and it really starts to
Force you back and you can try that you know take the golf club Put it close to your shoulder throw the club head wide and down and you’ll feel that it forces your body back up as the club head moves down the body moves back all you’re
Going to need for this simple alignment stick many of you are going to carry these and I’ve placed this let’s call it one two three Club head widths in front of my ball would be on a pretty shallow Angle now you might need to play around
With this a little bit to find that angle but this is what I want you to set up now we’re in a position now where we’ve made our back swing we’ve made our transition we’re coming into impact here’s what I’d love you to do you’re going to now rotate through Keep Your
Head on the ball if not a little bit back of the ball this is r k I’ll come to this in a moment as you try and take the so of your golf club and slide it up this alignment stick and I can obviously feel that and you can probably just
About hear that what this is doing by keeping my head back and getting the sole of The Golf Club of the alignment stick it’s giving me some structure my arms it’s creating that wide position on the way through the key thing here and I cannot stress this enough the club head
Is what we’re trying to create some width in relative to you that’s the key so because the thought process is often to get the club wide on the way through I see lots of golfers trying to chase it with the head in the body because they’re trying to move the club what
Happens is that actually just causes the arms to collapse if we want to create some width we almost have to have the sensation of the club head going one way and the head going back the other way take a look at some of the go things of
The greats what’s the head doing through impact it is definitely not going forwards it’s if anything going a little bit backwards as the arms are extending so let me show you what it would look like if I put these three movements into a ging I take a setup keep super wide
Early I shift into the door frame and then I land the club in the alignment stick with my head back so let’s go ahead now and kind of show you what that would look like as a little drill so I’m going to try and put those three movements in I’m going to
Hit this shot it won’t reach the green but I should be able to you know still strike it and still get the right movements so takeaway super wide there’s my narrow there’s my wide so wide narrow wide it’s going to help you be B striking

Need to try this….me thinks…
Very good Chris.
This is such a great video. I discovered this while practicing in my living room that a wide take away allowed more time for my lower body to separate from my upper body so I can shift forward in my swing.
Well done Chris 👏 😊
Never considered my narrow backswing is the root cause of not getting off my back foot in the downswing. Thanks.
So, is
“Wide-Narrow-Wide”
another way to say
“Body-Hands-Body”?
… that is: focus on turning the BODY on the backswing,
start down with arms & HANDS in transition (keeping the back to the target & shallowing the club)
and then rotate the BODY through impact & (full extension) followthrough? 🤔
Good stuff (as always), Chris 👍🏻
makes a lot of sense.
hope it works for me.
concept/related pitfalls & corrections well explained.
Thanks
Thank you for this. Would you recommend practicing this with 50%-70% power swing to get the feels for the wide-narrow-wide?
I think I am guilty of wide wide narrow. Got a feeling wide narrow wide will help with my weight transfer and therefore contact. Does it work for driver too?
Wow! This was really helpful. Great teaching Chris!
Excellent as usual head back was a game changer for me thanks
