BEST Ball Positions for BETTER Contact & GREAT Golf Shots!

Ball position is very important for making good strikes in golf and it is one of the most common questions I get from my learners. This video will demonstrate the best ball positions that I use for good contact throughout all of my clubs!

Hey folks and welcome to Greg’s golf Shack you know one of the most important keys to good ball striking is the position of where our ball is relative to our setup a lot of times people might be working on their swing and trying to hit the ball right but it’s just that

The ball is in the wrong spot when they’re setting up to hit a shot I noticed this with some of my students and I also get a lot of questions when I’m teaching some golf clinics about ball positions so I want to share with you the ideal ball positions for each of

Your clubs to help you hit the ball more solid and get the most out of your golf game now one of the first things you can do to improve your golf is subscribe to my channel I’m a certified golf instructor I really want to help you

Improve your game have more fun on the course I’ve got lots of tips on my YouTube channel so check it out now because our clubs vary in length our ball position is going to be a little bit further out for the longer clubs our posture should be relatively the same

Throughout our bag now some people might lean over a little bit more for the short clubs and stand up a little taller for the long clubs but generally the LI angle on the clubs should kind of provide us the opportunity to maintain a similar posture throughout our bag all

Right we’re setting up for a golf shot I’m going to have this red alignment stick here kind of identifying the middle of my stance in between my feet kind of right in the middle and a lot of folks will just kind of put the ball right there in the middle and for some

Clubs this is ideal especially your wedges now for me I like to have the ball in the middle of my stance for anything from my pitching wedge up SO pitching wedge gap wedge Sand Wedge unless I’m hitting a specific kind of shot like I want to hit it low or punch

It or something for a standard full swing I like it right in the middle of my stance and my setup for a pitching wedge will kind of be like this hands forward a little bit a little bit of a forward shaft Lan and that is an ideal wedge setup for

Me now when we get into mid irons like seven iron eight iron these kind of things I like the ball to be a little bit more forward it might just be half in or so something like that just forward of the middle of my stance a

Little bit and I’ll have a similar kind of setup my hands in the same position just a little forward shaft Lan and that is a good position for my seven iron now when you get into long irons like for example this is a four iron I

Like the ball even a little bit more forward just a bit not too much maybe another half inch or so little bit more you kind of find out what works for you the best to what gives you the best ball striking but then that’s a four iron

That’s a little bit more forward in my stance my hands are still a little bit ahead a little forward shaft Ling but that is an ideal four iron setup position for me as far as ball position goes now if you’re not someone who hits long irons and you like hybrids instead

Which I like hybrids I like it in the same position as that long iron this is a three hybrid but I use a three and a four hybrid and I’ll have it in that same position just a little bit ahead of the middle of my stance hands just

Slightly ahead like that and just like the long iron that’s the ball position I like for my hybrids now as we get into our Fairway Woods I’m going to have it even a little bit more forward not a whole lot just a little bit more something like that and

I’m not going to have my hands ahead of the club this is going to be a little bit more neutral my hands and the club are kind of both ahead equally in my setup position and that’s a good setup position for my Fairway Wood you know

It’s about 2 in more forward in the stance maybe a little bit more and I’m not pressing my hands forward that’s a good position for my Fairway Wood setup I’ve teed one up here for the driver my stance is going to be a little bit wider but the red marker still

Identifies the middle of my stance and you’ll notice that that ball is much more forward it’s actually closer to the InStep of my front foot than it is the middle of my stance and if I kind of tilt my shoulders a little bit we’ll see

That that club comes up into that ball I like that that feels really comfortable there like I’m going to hit up on the ball and send it far now one of the best friends we can have on the golf course is knowledge of why these things happen and you might be

Asking yourself why do I want those balls in a different position for each of those clubs so I want to tell you this all has to do with the bottom of our swing Arc we all have this circular motion swing and where that club hits its lowest point is important for how it

Reacts with the different kinds of clubs that we’re hitting now relative to my stance here the bottom of the Ark is always going to be in a similar location just beyond my stance here so the bottom of our swing Arc should be a little bit forward of the center of our stance so

When I have something like my pitching wedge you can see that the swing is going to be a little bit steeper into impact as the ball travels through the ground after the ball giving me some good compression some good spin to send that ball up high in the air using the

Loft on the club I don’t need to help it up in the air the loft of the club is going to take care of that with my mid iron a little bit more forward in the stance you can see I can get a swing and

The swing Arc is still going to be in the same spot but I’m not going to be hitting the ball quite as steep this is going to be a little flatter of a swing Arc because it’s a little bit longer of a club so there’s an opportunity for

That divot to be a little bit shallower because my swing is a little bit flatter thus still giving me that ideal contact point before the club enters the ground now that hybrid or long iron again a little bit more forward again this is going to be a little bit flatter of a

Swing cuz it’s a longer club and we’re still kind of hitting that ball just on the early part of that divot we’re still getting a little bit down but you can see that the club is starting to get a little bit further the ball is getting a

Little closer to the center of that divot but with these hybrids we’re still catching the ball a little bit on that downswing to help generate that spin to help get the ball up into the air and use the loft of the club now the ball is

Up a little bit further for the the fairway wood this is because the fairway wood isn’t necessarily something we want to hit on the down swing we kind of want it to be a little bit more level with the ground now people will kind of go

Back on forth if they like to hit down on a fairway wood or not but ideally for the average golfer like us we kind of want to catch that ball at the bottom of the Ark we don’t really want to be taking big divots with our Fairway woods

And this is the best way to catch that ball clean and really get the most out of the club this is why when we take practice Swings with a fairway wood it’s good to try to brush the ground just kind of brush it and that’s how we want

To make the strike so that’s why it’s good for the ball to be at the lowest part of our swing Arc to make that contct happen in the best way now the driver I’ve got it way up in The Stance here might be a little bit too far for

This example but this is the one club that we want to hit on the upswing this is why the driver swing feels a lot different it’s not really a different swing from the rest of our clubs it might be a flatter swing a little bit more horizontal than our pitching wedge

Because it’s a long club we want to swing around us and not hit the ground but the swing mechanics are still the same the biggest change is that ball position because we want to hit that ball on the upswing so we position the ball beyond the bottom of the Ark this

Allows us to take a big swing have the bottom of the Ark happen before that ball and as the club’s coming up it will hit that ball send it up into the air and bomb it down that Fairway so those are some ball positions that you can experiment with when you’re practicing

Or when you’re out on the course and knowing where that ball should go for each Club can help you get the most out of your ball striking hitting it pure and shooting lower scores I hope that tip helps please like And subscribe we’ll see you next time on Greg’s golf Shack
