Bar lots to do in our number two here Brian Kelly and his team uh deep into Spring football at this point had that one week off for spring break but trying to get something accomplished in these 15 practices before the national club spring game and he met with a media
Yesterday and and had some things to say specifically about the defense that I found quite interesting um one is he just talked about the identity of the team and that’s something that you kind of try to to get established in this um three four week period of spring
Football what is the identity of this group and is it starting to show the identity is starting to kind of show itself I think you know this is going to be much more that the sum is going to be greater than any one of the parts of
This team which is great you know I mean I think that there’s going to be a lot of players that will play and and take an important role in the team but we’re going to need everybody that’s an interesting way to go about it um LSU is a football program that has certainly
Been built with a lot of stars now a lot of depth too you got to have that to win in football there’s no question about that you can’t have two guys lead you to the promised land like you potentially could in basketball but um you got to
Have a full roster but they’ve had a lot of stars Joe burrow star Jamar Jay is a star last year all three of your offensive weapons were absolute stars and Jaden Daniels Brian Thomas and Malik neighbors household names it’s hard to identify that guy on this team would it
Be shocking if Garrett nus or Caleb Jackson morphed into that would it be shocking if Harold Perkins became a first team All-American and won the the um the buckus award I probably not but right now it’d be tough to pinpoint that I mean your best player might be your
Left tackle and that’s not exactly what draws the headlines out at this point so I I get that there are a lot of really good players on this team but I don’t know if if you’ve got you’re not going to have a lot of preseason First Team all Americans Campbell and Jones
Potentially and maybe Harold Perkins on name recognition not necessarily on production from last year but there’s no Tyron Matthew or Morris CLA or Patrick Peterson or Derrik Stingley in the secondary right now you don’t have proven commodities in terms of star power at wide receiver I mean late
Neighbors last year was coming off a thousand yard season so I think that’s interesting that he would think that this is more of a a su of its parts deal than than a team that’s got a ton of of star power um I want to talk defense a little bit
And and major Burns has been around a long time um but potentially play in the star position this spring the star gives you a lot more I would say versatility within your defensive structure a guy that can play Man coverage guy that can Blitz guy that can play zone coverage um
A really good tackler athletic in space but also you know a guy that’s rugged enough that you know if you put a tight end he can handle himself at the line of scrimmage you know we felt like you know major you know really fit that mold in
Terms of the star he’s closer to the football and and he has those those skills that we were looking for I often say that quotes are a little more impactful than practice reports especially in the spring somebody rolls their an in the spring like that’s just
Not that big a deal it might be a big deal if we’re out there in Fall camp and they roll their ankle 11 days before the Florida the well not Florida State this time around USC game but you know and everything kind of looks the same outside of some injuries in Spring ball
But with the quotes if guys are moving or trying something different you find that out and if you’re going to move major Burns closer to the football closer to the line of scrimmage dealing with some tight ends doing some blitzing you got to have somebody go back and
Play level where he’s spent most of the last two years and that’s back at safety Sage Ryan would make a lot of sense there you know Sage obviously is a guy that we moved around all over trying to find a spot for him um you know he’s got
Speed he’s got athleticism um obviously that was a position that you know um you know needed some depth and and he provides obviously that experience that that were was lacking at that position look sage has been around a long time and he been on a couple defenses that haven’t been great but I
Don’t think that’s necessarily all of his fault he is very versatile they’ve asked him to play some nickel they’ve asked him to play some dime they’ve asked him to play some safety at times he had to go out there and play Corner because you didn’t really have anybody
Else and he’s never batted an eye at any of that now he did dip his toe into the transfer portal Waters and then decide you know what I think I’ll I’ll come on back but he’s back now and I think you can find that he’s he’s committed to
What they’re trying to do it sounds like they’re going to try him out at safety but in any event there’s going to be a pretty heavy rotation at corner because there’s just a lot of dudes um that don’t necessarily have a defined role yet so Kelly talked to the the the
Rotation that you’re going to see in the defensive back field as I said I think the sum is going to be you know much more about what this team is than anyone individual I I don’t know that there’s going to be one corner I think it’s
Going to be two or three corners at a particular position I don’t know there’s going to be one safety I think it’s going to be two or three so I I think you’re going to just see a lot of guys that are going to be competing and and
Helping us instead of well there just one star at one position one Superstar and I think that’s a good thing can I be completely honest with you the listener I’m just going to be very honest I have very little idea of what to make of LSU’s defensive backfield where they’re going to play
Who’s going to play in what order how well they’ll play I I have very little concrete information on that I got guys coming back from various injuries I got transfers coming in I got guys moving positions I don’t know I’m not going to try to sit here
And rattle off the names and tell you this guy’s going to be here and this guy’s gonna be there and this like I don’t know I don’t know it’s March they’re not short on depth they might be short on Talent they might not be I don’t know I feel pretty comfortable telling you
That major Burns and Sage Ryan are going to be out there pretty quickly I could guess it’s some other stuff I got asked on Chuck Oliver show yesterday who’s the number one corner I don’t know I think there’s a chance it’s Z Alexander I think there’s a chance it’s Ashton
Stamps I don’t think it’s jav and Toano but I it could be either Ohio State transfer I don’t know I wish I could be a little more uh like it’s not even that it’s like lack of effort or lack of research or lack of knowledge I know all
The guys I just don’t know anything about him I’m not going to judge Ashton stamps and jav and Toano for playing as true freshman on a defense that never stopped anybody all year I don’t know how healthy Z Alexander is I don’t know what the two Ohio State transfers can
Do I feel a little anxious about it but I can’t give you a a a firm opinion on it either way I do know that you can help your secondary if you rush the passer and while you’re looking for some proven pieces on the inside you do have
Some potentially exciting options on the outside they just have to grow into that and I think deshun wac is one of those guys and ran Kelly was asked about deshun wac and and gave his uh thoughts on the seconde player you know the maturity level of desan wac the health
Of deshan wack remember now he was you know he was in part of spring and and then you know had shoulder surgery and and was coming off a shoulder surgery and I just think in the weight room physically developing um having a year to kind of understand what it takes to
Be in college has put him in a really good position he’s a you know he’s got a chance to be an Elite pass rusher I’ll drag this back to baseball very briefly but you’ll get the the the reference here the biggest jumps for guys need to be between freshman and sophomore year
You needed that from Jared Jones and Brady Neil and Paxton King and Ethan fry and you’ve seen kind of the results over there the same thing applies for DeShawn wilck I’m not asking you to show up on campus and be a terror off the edge
That’s a a lot to ask I am going to ask you as a guy who was that highly recruited had that many scholarship offers that has been now in the program for a year to show up as a sophomore and be very difficult to block if if LSU is
Going to make strides on defense it’s going to be largely due to some Development A lot of the same guys are going to play this year they’ve got to play better now thean didn’t play that much last year but he’s got to be better than he was last year for this LSU
Defense to reach the level at needs to reach I’m excited to see it certainly not doubting that at all and hopefully he becomes a really really good pass rusher over the next uh six months five months before they go to uh to Las Vegas to play USC hey thanks for watching hunt

The DB comment I found concerning from BK. It’s kind of like when you say you have two quarterbacks that means you don’t have any. I hope that’s not the case. And he’s just trying to keep him them all around.
