Dozens of worshippers headed to Eibad Alrahman Mosque in Damascus as the first Friday prayer took place after a nationwide shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The prayer took place observing the security regulations imposed by the government. Worshippers wore face masks and received doses of hand sanitiser ahead of the service. Many were wearing gloves as an additional precautionary measure during the first mass prayer of holy Ramadan.
“Thanks to God, today we came to the mosque and there was a great commitment by the people, and today there was Friday pray and we returned as we were before. Thank God this change was preferred by God and we wear masks and when we entered there was disinfection and everything was organized and there was a safe distance between each person so that no one touches the other, there is a commitment by everyone”, said one of the worshippers.
On March 15, Syrian authorities temporarily suspended all the religious mass gatherings, including Friday prayers, in an attempt to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country has registered only 45 confirmed cases of coronavirus and three deaths of the disease so far.
