If you’re like me you’ll look at the best plays in the world and how that club moves effortlessly into the slot in the downswing and you’ll get real jealous of how they do it today let me share with you all the key components involved in

Doing that and one of them will be the real game changer for you the right switch on light bulb moment for you to make your down swing and your transition in particular work now why is it important to get the transition right well if we start the dcing right

Obviously we get to the correct impact we get to the correct impact we hit great beautiful golf shots and consistent and that’s what we’re looking for today so when we look at the club in transition we want this club to move in this fashion certainly not moving

Outward or forward like this that is what we’d see is the most common error by the average golfer all great players the center of the mass in the Sha which is around about here would move behind the hands and work down and forward towards the golf ball in that transition

Move so if we look first of all at the body and the body’s role in that transition the body in particular is going to be lower half driven so the lower half will move towards Target first the upper half has an axis tilt or a right Bend which then in turn helps

Shallow that club so the body’s role essentially is making sure that we get the sequence right the lower half working first and if the back swing is done correctly this will become certainly more automatic but we can still try and Implement a good lower half lateral slide on the upper

Half what we would feel is almost staying back or keeping that back to Target longer to create this kind of axis tilt and this separation between the lower and the upper half that’s what the good players do and they do it pretty easy to be honest with you what

That causes is obviously a slight shallow of the golf club the next thing we’re going to look at is really the wrists and the arms so the arm initially the lead arm as we get into this transition phase would compress into our body and then it bounces back off our body it’s

What we call a stretch shortened cycle like this and also at the same time it will rotate so this elbow will move more towards this camera here or more horizontal and that rotation as you can see there changes the orientation on the pitch of this shaft in order to get it

Into a more inside shallow position on the way down to allow us then to turn onto the golf ball so we can focus on obviously the body we can focusing the arm the next thing we’re going to look at is the wrists and then the last thing we’re

Going to look at is the shaft or more external thought so the wrists the key thing with the wrist is basically the lead and trails wrists movement the lead wrist is going to go what we call into more flexion which is bending or bowing back this way and the

Trail wrist is going to go more into extension so really setting back and I’d really encourage you as a golfer to try and do this the maximum amount you can because I can’t really see you doing it too much I’m yet to see players do it too much in the downswing there’s

The odd player the odd Elite player like Dustin Johns and John Ram these guys will really work this movement quite hardcore in the back swing but very few of them will do this too much in the down swing a great way of feeling this is to take a swimming paddle or a table

Tennis bat and stick it on your right hand place it down the side of the shaft where your right hand would normally be take your address position at the top of the Swing try and get a paddle to go more towards the sky and then almost more towards the ground those two

Moves give you a real feeling of shallowing the club and it also creates the correct rotation in the arms also as well and also because your right hand is off the club it stops the right arm and right shoulder being too dominant and creating that steing effect or the over

The top look which we certainly all hate the more we can feel this movement the better once you become a tuner doing that with a few practice wings at home you can go ahead and try and hit a golf ball this is pretty tough I can’t tell you that enough

The last thing we’re going to look at is the more external W doing this which is more the shaft or the club head so the way in which I like to get gos to see this is take an object I’ve got a tennis ball here with a slit in it

And place it midpoint down the shaft the idea here is really trying to get that tennis ball to work behind the hands in the downswing and in doing so we are getting that Center Mass to work behind us and the more behind us we do the more free

Speed we get and the more torque we generate to square that club back up those two things generate more speed and who doesn’t want more speed speed is great if we get speed for free without having to do any gym work or exercise and this will help us do that again you

Can hit gol balls with this tennis ball on but it will come off during the swing but it’s really just the case of if it helps you with a concept or feel to drive the concept to the golf course then that’s what we want and ultimately all these things we’re talking about is

You to nail on and gather with yourself what is going to work for you to play

  1. This was an excellent explanation and demonstration Alistair about the golf transition. Probably one of your best! I feel I have no problem with my takeaway nor the movement to the top of the swing. My problem more is in the second part of the transition. Whereby you are suggesting a reverse forearm role, I have been working on my right elbow moving more into my side to shallow the club for the downswing! Which is better? I'll have to look into it more! Well Done, however Alistair! Keep up the good work!

  2. Can you do one of these videos for the driver swing as it’s a little bit different with hitting up etc? 👍
