Competitor this is the time of year that you absolutely love because it’s less time in the practice room and more time on the mat and that that’s where you that’s what you live for you live to compete and there’s not a whole lot of downtime uh in between matches and
Competition so this time of year for an athlete it’s fun and it’s also fun for us and the fans because we get to see a lot of action in a short amount of time and this is when the season really starts heating up obviously uh uh Michigan and Penn State we’re wrestling
Right now and and just finishing up so this is the time of year things start getting really exciting it’s a lot of fun out here and obviously uh you know still question marks within that lineup I mean there’s new faces that we’re seeing in and out we’re going to see
Vovi at 49 we’re going to see colen sh at 133 again and so you know Tom BR still have some work to do and these guys you know yeah there’s less time in the practice room but that means there’s less opportunity for you to prove you

Done and kind of set the tone and set the stage for what you wanted to try to do and continue that Legacy absolutely you know that’s a big part of the sport you know is is be able to uh is be able to know the history of the sport and
Know the history of the Iowa wrestling program and how important it is and and you grow up watching uh you know IO public television and I love seeing these guys here and I was down there and I participated went down there and I seen uh you know a lot of teammates of
Mine but also guys before me and you know you see Bruce kinit down there you know the alltime Pinner right there himself you know pins his way through the Big 10 of the Nationals and that’s really impressive Chris Campbell is in the house today you know Chris Campbell
Is an amazing story in itself and I think it was it was that 65 team nine nine out of the 10 guys are here that’s so awesome to see you know I see Brook Simpson down there mark mnik down there and uh so much history in the sport that
Helped build this program program to what it is and it’s neat when you can see him kind of all come together from from I don’t want to say the oldtimers because you know everybody gets old at some point in time it’s just the way it
Goes but the guys that were more of the staple of the program early to the guys that just graduated here recently like you see Jacob Warner down there who’s an Alum now you know just graduated last year so you got all different Realms and it’s neat to see kind of everybody come
Together and tell stories and and do different things and Blake raising down there and uh it’s it’s really neat that they have something like this they do something like this and uh Katie win and and Taylor Barry did an amazing job within the UI Letterman’s club and
Putting all this together takes a lot of time and effort reaching out to everybody and contacting via email and phone calls and Chuck Jaga headed it up and just a lot lot that goes into making something like this happen and it’s special to the I hope the current
Athletes understand how special it is to have all these guys standing out there kind of creating a mass tunnel for them to run through and that right there just enough motivation right there for you to be able to go out and perform tonight put on a show for for the guys that used
To basically built this place yeah know are it is amazing to see some of that and I was just thinking on the way in and you know talking with Tom after we did the interview and I ran into Terry and you know talked about being a little flat on Monday and we’ve
Seen it a few times this year where you know we’re winning matches but maybe we’re not putting a lot of points on Tom bran said bonus points we need to get some bonus points tonight we need to light up that scoreboard and that’s what a lot of these guys did that’s the
Reason that you know they’re here is because they knew how to light up that scoreboard they were able to do it they found ways to continue to push themselves and get better and you would hope to see some of the current guys even some of the young guys maybe some
Of the freshmen that aren’t competing understand what they were able to do and be able to say I want to emulate what they did when I go out there to compete yeah and like Tom said too you know I like what hearing what Tom has to say putting points on the scoreboard bonus
Points you know and like kind of like what we talked about you know on Monday night against Minnesota it doesn’t have to be that hard you know and you do it once you push someone off the edge once then it makes it easier to do it again
And again and again and next thing you know it becomes a habit it becomes a habit to be a point scorer and a go-getter and it just shouldn’t be as hard as what sometimes we make it to look like like it is but you got to get
Yourself past certain things and kind of you know get you got to get past feeling comfortable that’s the best way I can describe it you know it’s easy and comfortable to win you know 3 to2 it’s not easy to win in a tough hardfought match you know 15 to seven you know you
You you got to get out of your comfort zone a little bit to to make things certain things happen and and that’s what we need to do and hopefully we can you know I know Tom talks about it and he spoke to the team about it and
Hopefully these guys can start but the thing is it starts upstairs in that in that wrestling room too you know you know it’s about how you go through a practice are you just kind of riding the wave through practice or are you actually in practice trying to score as
Many takes down as you can and in that short amount of practice time that you have and so what you’re going to do up in the practice room is going to translate down over here onto the wrestling mat so you have to practice how you’re going to compete and that

At 125 lbs this is a match you don’t want to watch after this match then you can go get your popcorn ice cream whatever you want to do go to the bathroom but if you’re just walking in the building I’d skip anything you got from having to go to the restroom to get
Some refreshments and get your buttt the seat to watch this match cuz this is the biggest one of the night and what a great opportunity for Drake aella tonight uh this is going to be a marquee match I don’t know who all Ramos has lost to I know they lost to a high

Victory wow only two matches that shows you how tough Penn State is underway here aala and Ramos Ramos long lanky shoots Iowa off the edge are you kidding me gets called for stalling terrible rule here we go already the match just starts and we got to deal with these BS
Rules unbelievable Drake is almost got to go behind on the edge of the mat right there yeah that that’s a perfect example where the the head officials here and the rules committee have to change that rule have to slide by a attt by Ramos but Drake
Able to stay Square I know people have talked about there we got blood time for Drake he got a cut on the side of the head there right by that happens like on the side of the head must probably fingernail or something or it could be something like a scab or something from
Before and then it just kind of got cut open again now so I know people have talked about like adding a push out rule do you think that would be a better opportunity no absolutely terrible cuz then everything’s going to be where you’re not even wrestling you’re just
Trying to push a guy out which is what ended up Marinelli ended up doing that’s how he beat a mean from Michigan the last time he wrestled him I mean never even tried to take a shot he just push out push push push that’s boring too
Yeah just call the dang stalling and if someone backs out of bounds and he’s stalling then you call for stalling but if it’s just good wrestling you don’t you don’t need a rule for it let’s see if we can find Chuck EGA have him come
Up and talk to us about it he was good about calling Stalin consistently there’s Ramos pops the elbow almost got to the leg but Drake still fighting off right on the edge trying to Circle back in in Ramos definitely been controlling the ties controlling the pace so far in the
Early going see if Drake can start to respond and pick his action up in return minute 45 to go first period no score 125 pound match R got to find a way to get to the legs though we’re wasting too much time here in the first period very similar to
Uh the Minnesota match the other night against mcke he didn’t come out firing early on and mcke snuck a taked down in Roe for quite a while in that first period and you just you can’t you got to make the clock your friend don’t make it
Your enemy and use the clock to your advantage try and get one here this first period 115 to go getting our elbows tied up quite a bit by Ramos Ramos is so good with the hand fighting kind of tying our elbows up slowing our slowing us down a little bit
Start have to make adjustments there’s a nice little snap and try to kind of get an angle right there by Drake that was great movement out of Drake right there nice snap by Drake starting to move Ramos a little bit and that’s what we got to do is stay on Ramos try and
Get him tired a little bit start making him react a little bit Rainbow’s leading that left leg really really heavy nice if we had a shot to that leg Ramos down block he he Ramos didn’t set that shot shot up at all that’s good for us 30
Seconds to go here in the first period be nice if we got in a shot and got to the legs Ramos there a nice snap by Drake fighting with that right hand up on the collar like you say though Ramos doing a lot with controll on the elbows and that’s been slowing

Mark to try try to get to those legs that he hasn’t been able to so far angles lots more angles duck attempt by Ramos two on one as there is AA trying to find that angle look to step over the leg but Ramos clears out there he Taps
The head swipes at the leg Hawk fans wanting to stall call as snap move got to get more angles we got to get got to get a little bit more intensity out Drake start picking it up there you know nice but we got to follow through with
It he’s been hitting some good snaps and stuff but we got to follow through oh now Ramos is getting us in the front head just trying to slow us down a little bit right there Drake Isa did a great job great job circling out of that and clearing out of
That inside tie right there by Drake he’s starting to control the ties a little bit more but we still having a hard time getting to the legs 35 seconds to go second period will be aa’s choice in the third you can tell Ramos he doesn’t want to work very hard right now
He’s trying to just kind of maintain position he doesn’t want to work hard and Drake’s got to sense that so Drake’s got to really start finding a way to fire off a shot or two like legit good shots there’s a double from a ways away
By Ramos and boom he takes us down with a beautiful double leg right there Drake with a snap and then just didn’t follow through and got caught standing that’s the thing he just didn’t follow through and got caught you know and and Ramos knew what he was doing the whole time he
Just waiting for that opportunity Drake got to his feet unable to get out so it’ll be a 4 nothing lead for Ramos as we go to the third and that’s what I was afraid of that’s why that first and second period we just kind of never got a shot off and
We never got to the legs like we really needed to pick up our level of intensity Drake up to his feet trying to get hand control Ramos trying to do everything he can to Hold Us Down Drake out with a one-point Escape now we got to go and Drake will
Go now he he knows he’s got to go but be smart don’t get caught reaching to allow Ramos to do what he did to get that taked down at the end of the second period you know Ramos is definitely going to go on the defense now but Drake cannot wait until 30
Seconds left we got a minute 30 to go in the match he’s down four to one just like Monday Tom said he used the clock he’s got to be able to get things firing now there it is there’s a nice shot in deep on that left
Leg that we were talking about now he’s got it elevated it up high trying to trip him up Ramos rolls two three no no take down yet he tried Somers and Drake didn’t control him still on that leg Ramos still hopping around Drake trying to adjust climbs up above the knee

Just a little bit uh briefly about yourself yeah sure so I’m a cattle farmers daughter from monel Iowa um so grew up in monell went to undergrad here at University of Iowa so Hawkeye true and true uh uh forever and ever and uh lived kind of different places in the US
Um so out in California and Chicago overseas for several years up in Canada for a little bit and came back when I joined Green State which is the most amazing move I’ve ever done and back in my home state and loving it excellent well Green State uh been around for
Quite some time uh getting closer to uh 100 years at 1938 is when it was first established it is Iowa’s largest Credit Union with over 11 billion in assets 455,000 members there’s 32 offices located both in Iowa and Illinois over 900 employees so there’s a lot of people
That uh call Green State home so I know uh been around a lot a lot of people know the former name with the uiccu but uh had to change some things there but still in Our Roots that’s right it’s always there so I know that uh you guys
Are looking to be or have always looked to be in the community you always want to give back talk about some of the things that we’ve seen from you guys here in this past year yeah really thrilled um just what with what we were
Able to do this last year so we set a few records um specifically in 2023 so a couple uh points just to call out so over 4 million that we donated in financial support to over 600 local charities so giving back to our community is just that’s what we do and
That’s why we exist and and we’ll always do that so really pleased to cross that 4 million Mark which is a big deal our staff also volunteered over 6,000 hours and then the other thing we’ve been able to do we’re we’re ultimately here to serve our members and our communities

We’re going to start to see that go down um which is great um for for many reasons one thing also uh we’ve been able to do uh recently so we still got great deposit rates but we’ve also lowered our loan rates recently which is great for members not just then in
Deposits but also in their lending and credit needs so it’s great um so with that um I know i’ read somewhere that you guys a while ago had a year had a 10year goal to get a billion dollars in mortgages for first-time home buyers obviously interest rates are very big in
The mortgage Market uh also looking to help close the minority home ownership Gap here in the state how’s that been going what are some things that you guys have done with that endeavor yeah great this is one of the things we’re we’re really proud of at Green State and again
Back to like just people helping people and communities and Rising tide together right um we made the commitment uh a few years ago of 10year goal of a billion in um helping close that racial uh divide in home ownership and really really pleased that we actually just recently

These guys here helps them be able to focus on what they need to do training wise and try to attain those goals of getting an Olympian hopefully AIC champion from the University of Iowa and the Hawkeye wrestling club well they just introduced Chris Chris Campbell at
Halftime you know and uh on that 74 team and he was a two-time Olympic team member and and multiple world champion and that’s what we’re looking for we’re looking for more Chris Campbell and and trying to get these guys that we currently have in the hawkey wrestling
Club and future guys uh that are going to be part of the hawy wrestling club an opportunity that’s all we’re trying to do is get them an opportunity to be able to come into our room train with our current athletes and travel overseas get some great competition get some great
Experience and try to make some World Olympic teams and and uh and you know become something that they’ve dreamt about for a really long time but the thing is it’s only a short amount of time of your life and you have to make the most of it when you can and by
Allowing them and getting some money through this this uh Arctic plunge it gets money so that they can train full- time and don’t have to go get part-time jobs it allows them to pay for their trips overseas and and uh to different countries and their entry fees for US
Open and there’s a lot of different things that this money goes towards and it’s very beneficial not only to those guys individually but also to our current program and our current athletes so because they can be in the room and they can trainer them and make them

Smart crafty wrestler and a veteran and he waited for that prime time that Drake kept snapping and snapping he waited for him to snap and then bam right off that snap exploded into a double he timed it perfectly and there wasn’t really anything that Drake could do to fight
That take on off so that was a tough loss Riggins that’s another tough plus that’s a that’s a w rigin isn’t winning a lot of matches that’s a winnable match for rigin that’s one that we really need to have Riggins has to find some offense you know it’s not about going out there
And just trying to keep matches close and being at the end he has to start finding ways to win matches and you’re going to do that by hitting shots and creating angles and and giving yourself an opportunity to win the matches and get attempts and rigin just he just
Doesn’t do that enough and you’re not going to win many matches if you don’t take attempts and you don’t hit shots and and that’s that’s why his record is what it is right now so I mean you look at a lot of these other matches where they’re really big lopsided victories
But they also should be too I mean those shouldn’t be 6 to2 or 8 to3 type victories those should be Tech ball victories and and that’s what we had and vavich threw up a lot of points um franic he almost lost that one just like he lost in Minnesota one at what point
Are you going to learn that you cannot russle close matches you have to go out from the first first whistle to last and and that guy’s clinging and pulling but and and and just you you got to make adjustments throughout the match and he just he just didn’t do that and wasn’t
Doing that and I don’t know we got to figure he’s got to figure something out there for sure we’re just wrestling we got beat by a number 19th ranked guy and we almost got beat by a number 16th ranked guy and that that shows you how
