Hello and welcome. If you’re new to the game of golfĀ and you are wondering, what is a birdie, what is an eagle, what is an albatross?Ā And all of these different words. Well, look no further.Ā This video is for you.
Hello and welcomeĀ to the golf for Beginners academy. My name is Nicola, and I’m gonna explain to youĀ what all of these weird words, they actually mean. So let’s dive straight into it.Ā So when you play a round ofĀ golf, you usually play 18Ā
Holes, and each hole will have what we call a par. So it’s usually either a par three hole,Ā par four hole, or par fiveĀ hole. What does that mean?Ā Well, that means that, let’s say a professional player is supposed to use three shots toĀ
Get the ball in the hole. On a par three hole,Ā Ā a professional player is supposed to use four shots when it is a par four hole to get theĀ ball in the hole, and fiveĀ shots on a par five holeĀ
To get the ball in the hole, that would be what a professional player would be expected to be ableĀ Ā to do. If theĀ Ā professional player, let’s say he’s playing a par five hole, so he should use five shots,Ā but he only uses four shots, that is one better than he should,Ā Ā
That is called a birdie. Okay. If the player uses two shot less than heĀ was supposed to or she was supposed to, that would be playing a par five hole, but onlyĀ using three shots, that would be called an eagle. So that’s a little bit better than the birdie.Ā
And then we have, if you do three better than you’re supposed to.Ā So let’s say you are playing, again, a par five hole, but you only use two shots.Ā It does not happen very often, but if you only use two shots, that would be an albatross.Ā
So three better than you’re supposed to do. So, birdie, eagle, albatross.Ā Those are the nice words. We like to hear them on the golf course.Ā We also have something called a bogey. A bogey that is, well, the opposite direction.Ā Because what if you use one shot more than you’re supposed to use?Ā
So we can say, now we play a par four hole, but the professional player,Ā Ā he or she uses five shots to get the ball in the hole, that would be called a bogey.Ā And if the player uses twoĀ more shots than he or sheĀ
Was supposed to, so that wouldĀ be using six shots, six shotsĀ on a par four hole, that would be a double bogey. And then you can actually just continue, becauseĀ if you use three shots too much, it’ll be a triple bogey and so on.Ā
And there you go. That is the explanation of these funky words, butĀ they basically just tell you what your score was compared to what the par of the hole was.Ā And there you go. Good luck with your golfing journey.Ā
