3 Hard Lessons Learned about Golf Club Fittings (Beginners’ Advice)

This video is dedicated to my fellow “ITS THE CLUB, NOT ME” support group. We are always welcoming new members. However, not all club fittings and fitters are created equal and if you are considering getting some new sticks… learn from some of my mistakes and hopefully save you money or make the most out of your experience.

It would be amazing to be properly fit by @trottiegolf @TAYLORMADEGOLF or Ian & Mikey @clubchampionmedia . And if I’m really dreaming…. being invited out to TPI @titleist and then me and Max Homa could be like best friends and stuff. Justin Thomas is cool too, he could third wheel.

Subscribe and cheers!

So those new set of six are calling for you huh going to get fit for them well please learn from my mistakes hey everyone welcome to the video and you might be thinking right now hey random guy in your garage what Authority do you have to talk to me on Club fitting over

The past two and a half years I’ve been to seven Club fittings four for myself and three for some friends I’ve been to golf tchs I’ve been to Club Champions I’ve been to True specs still haven’t been to that Holy Grail txg if we can say that I’ve learned some things and

I’ve seen some patterns over that time and I want you to have the most information possible to hopefully maximize your experience and get the most out of your money should you get Club Fit here are the three things that I think you should know before you go

Get fit for clubs let’s jump into it so I think it’s safe to say the goal of any golfer going to get fit for a new set of clubs is to obtain the the Triforce consistency distance dispersion and to see an increase in those areas and we

Would consider that a win in in terms of of getting fit for a new club so let’s start with a little bit of Story Time first about 2 and a half years ago before I even decided to curse the internet with this face and YouTube channel the Mistress of golf Came

Calling to me and she sunk her hooks deep first order of business was to get new clubs and I had a set of Nike VR Pro blades way out of my skill level and I knew technology had progressed in some regards and I needed some more forgiving

Clubs I found myself a fitting at Golf Tech and 2 days later I’m in the hitting Bay getting fit and that’s where mistake number one happened right away so there I was excited for my very first Club fitting and the reality was is I had no

Idea of my current carry numbers or more importantly the equipment specifications of the clubs I currently had there is no standardized specification for a set of golf clubs every manufacturer slightly differs between the length the lie and the L offs of the clubs which is incredibly important and before I expand

On my story even further I want to do a test for you guys and show you how important that is I have currently my Titleist T100 s’s arguably one of the most you know successful irons put out and I’m a titles fan boy anyways but we’re going to compare that to the clubs

I gamed in high school the Cobra gravity backs Circa 1999 here’s the important part of this T 100s is at 32 de of Loft and the cobra which is over two decades old is one Dee weaker at 33 so let’s hit some shots and see the Numbers so you can just see from the numbers there that almost a quarter of century later that both these clubs are essentially kind of Performing the same now there’s certainly other technologies that make them easier to hit and all that stuff too I’m not discrediting that but the biggest difference is is the

Club’s LOF back back to the Golf Tech back to Kyle’s first fitting super excited there’s a huge difference between the loft of a VR Pro blade at 35° and the p790 which I ultimately hit and got fitted for at 30.5 De almost 5 degrees of Loft difference so it was no

Wonder that I saw an amazing boost of of distance and ball speed from the p790s because the Lofts were so incredibly different I should have been comparing the VR Pro 6 iron against the p79 7 iron to really get a true measure of the differences between the clubes by me not

Knowing my equipment specifications before I even hit a ball before I even even showed up to the fitting already gave him a win on basically selling me a set of clubes hey real quick before I ramble on even more hit that subscribe button down below and I’ll add a bonus

Tip to this video that totally won’t be there unless you hit that subscribe button trying to hit 5,000 subscribers this year and it would mean an absolute ton thanks guys cheers which brings up the second mistake and it might be kind of a hot take having a blind trust or

Faith in the fitter that they have your best interest in mind in that process that they’re going to give you all the information you need they’re going to hit all the data points to and allow you to make the most informed decision of how to spend your money and what I’ve

Seen through going through these fittings is not all fittings are created equal and that was certainly my experience for my first fitting at Golf Tech I went in there I hit a few different Club heads I settled on the p790 because the way I I like the way it

Felt and the fitter basically said okay great uh let’s ride them up for you I didn’t test a single other sha I didn’t test anything else other than just the club head and that was enough for me in my own ignorance to to sell me on a set

Of golf clubs Club Fitters can also kind of manipulate data to get you the dispersion or get you the results that you want and I have another example of that right here so in that last test comparing the two clubs where we didn’t see a whole lot of difference I also hit

A third Club I hit my old ass Cobra gravity back in the six iron at 29.5 de of Lock and why this is important is because the p790 very very popular iron a lot around a lot of people that’s seven iron is at 30.5 De of Loft if

We’re just comparing the the data numbers that I saw from my Golf Tech fitting years ago and then also just with my current T 100s if I hit this old Club at the fitter and I was told this was a seven iron then that’s a win I’ve

Gained 15 yards of distance gained ball speed but this club the The Loft is different and granted it’s slightly longer because of you know it is a iron but that would be a win in a Fitters book and you would sit there and see those numbers and be like wow this club

Is so much better than my current set of clubs how can I give up 15 yards of distance but again The Lofts are different so it should be being compared to a different Club in your bag so there’s a reason why pxg can do the Gen

6 driver Challenge and have a over 95% win rate but they know that their Fitters can skew the results or manipulate the club in a way through loft or lie or whatever the case is that’s exactly what they did in my challenge he immediately went to a 7 and

A half degree driver and given enough swings I eventually hit the ball further so you know job done just for foood For Thought don’t have a blind faith in the fitter know what you should be expecting in terms of you know the performance of a club so the third mistake I would

Really hope anyone to avoid is once you do decide to make that purchase whether you’re getting that new driver set of irons or even a new putter make sure you check your stuff check to make sure it is to the exact specifications that you determined when you went through that

Fitting process I’ve multiple times on the channel said that this queen bee number six is my favorite Club in the bag but even this comes with a little bit of drama that you know you certainly would want to avoid so I got fitted for my putter at a club champion and when I

Placed the order for it I was told it’ be about 4 4 to 6 weeks lo and behold within a week I got a text message from my fitter saying hey Kyle your Putter’s here come pick it up so obviously I rush over there I’m super excited to get this

Beautiful piece of artwork in my bag and I pick it up from the store and I get to the car I’m going to sit there and admire this thing for a little while I noticed at that time with the putter I was given something was a little off

With it one it didn’t have any heat shrink on it at all and as I started looking over the putter there were some scratches on the one that I received right here on the back of the Benton Ary place that should never be there for a

Brand new Putter and then the tail taale sign that I saw as well is that when I checked the end of the grip there was nothing but dirt and grime caked into the letters on the end of the grip as if it had been put into a dirty golf bag so

Obviously I went back into the store I told them I’m not going to accept this putter it looks like it’s obviously been used please you know know send me another one eventually that happened made sure it was in within my Loft and live specifications and things have been

Gravy and good days ever since lesson learn please check your equipment to make sure you’re getting what you purchased because we spend a lot of money on it and you want to make sure that you you’re getting what you pay for all right so there’s three things you

Should really watch out for when going to get fit for clubs and as that bonus tip that I promised you guys for hitting that subscribe button hey Kyle when should I go get fit for clubs at what skill level and I think once you’re kind of hovering around that break 100 Mark

You probably would see some benefit uh and consider going to get fit for some clubs especially a putter I would highly recommend getting Fit For A putter you use that club more than any club in your bag and once you know that you have confidence with it it makes all the

Difference I want you guys to jump down in that comment section and also share your stories about being fit for clubs either good or bad let other people know some things that they maybe need to look out for when going to get fit so that

Way they can get the best out of their experience as well anyways that’s the video for guys I hope you enjoyed it thank you so much for watching and we’ll see you next time cheers peace

  1. Wow. Can't believe Club Champion would try to pass off a used putter as new. For a self proclaimed "elite fitter", I have heard more than a few bad experiences.

  2. The few outfits that I went to seemed only interested in sell me new clubs. It’s like a long infomercial that I paid for. Eventually I seek out experienced good golfers in my area for advice and with some common sense, put together a great set of clubs for my self. I learned that excellence doesn’t have to be expensive.

  3. Hey man, great video and I agree with everything you’ve said.

My additional input (as if it’s needed)
    1 – Don’t expect miracles from a fitting.

2 – Pay for lessons, get consistent, then get fit.

3 – beware of the upgrades. In my driver fitting the fitter really pushed a premium shaft upgrade for what equated 1 yd dispersion and 3 yds of distance.

4 – drop brand allegiance – if you’re not one of the few thousand people on earth being paid by a brand to play, you don’t owe any allegiance to the brand, get what works for you.

  4. Good Video.. Also, That Bills vs Dolphins was a game that I thought Allen was gonna lose, Happy for the Bills.

  5. Terrific lessons, each one! Yes, get your numbers and specs in line, bring them, compare then don't commit… come back another day and repeat the process. Fitters worth a nickel won't have a problem with this, but you'll likely need to seek out an independent fitter.

  6. Great tips! Coincidently, I'm looking for a new set now (browser cookies are a real thing). I've been trying various brands and I'm down to the Ping I230 and Titleist T150. Cheers!
