Why take golf lessons when you can become a tour pro without them? That’s exactly what Bubba Watson thought when he was young. We are talking about the most famous self-taught genius who taught himself to swing harder and harder as he progressed and invented his own version of golf: ‘Bubba Golf’. His unique swing and unorthodox personality is why he is often heard in the same breath as golfers like John Daly and Moe Norman. But what do we exactly know about him?

Garry Lester Watson Jr. was born to proud parents Gerry Sr. and Molly Marie Watson on November 5, 1978, in Bagdad, Florida. He didn’t grow up like many professional golfers. Guided by his supportive father, Bubba spent his early years practicing every day. His practice consisted of hitting a wiffle ball around the back yard without ever having a lesson. Bubba simply enjoyed hitting the ball as hard as he could, to see how far it could hit it. His nickname, ‘Bubba,’ was given to him by his father, who named him after the American football player Bubba Smith.

Watson attended Milton High School, where he actively contributed to the school’s golf team. During his time there, he made progress very quickly, reflected by his high scoring average at that time. Throughout high school, he averaged 72.93, which caught the attention of many colleges. His dedication to the sport continued at Faulkner State Community College, where he studied consumer economics and pursued his dream of becoming a golf legend. Bubba’s unique skill and incredible talent earned him recognition as a member of the junior college All-American team.

  1. "His shots are all either a huge slice's or a big draw, which essentially limits his misses to one side of the golf course"……That would be the exact opposite of limiting misses to one side of the golf course, even though there isn't such a thing.
