So I think for most golfers the struggle with the golf swing is that they sets up over the ball with some great thoughts in the mind but once the swing in the golf club they never really know what the ball’s going to do whether it’s going to

Be a little bit left to right like that shape maybe a little right to left high low and the inconsistencies of how they deliver the golf club is very much influenced by the way they take the club away the initial part of the back swing and there isn’t necessarily a perfect

Way of doing it because you’ll see guys and women on tour some who take it out here some who take it in here and some that are somewhere in between but I’m going to give you a great little drill today to help you feel maybe the most

Simple way of taking the club away so that you’ve got nice control on the face and that the path of the club doesn’t need to be trying to help you out to man manipulate that being poor now having said that I’ll use me as

A good example so as a general rule if I don’t think too much about my golf swing I can take dead aim make my swing and generally that’s the shape of shot I’ll see the ball curving from right to left I don’t personally love the look of that and we can see on

Trackman there the good thing is the low Point’s 1.8 in behind the path was 4 and 1/2 de from the inside and the club face is closed 5 1/2 de so I know most of you watching probably go yeah but I sliced the ball I wish I did that look every

Golfer wants what they don’t have now if I look at my swing I know that delivery there is the club’s a bit from the inside and the club face gets a little bit closed so I feel like my hands get quite involved but when you look at my

Swing down the line my initial part of the takeaway is I tend to get the club behind me quite quickly my forearm comes out and then as a result I compensate decently but I’d like it to be more simple so I don’t feel like I have to

Manipulate the club so the way we’re going to do it is you’re going to take an alignment stick really easy to get a hold of and pop it down the shaft of the club and you’re going to set up obviously with the cane touching you and all you’re going to work on from

There is as you move away you want to feel that the alignment stick just runs down the front of your thigh so you’re going to from there move away and get that club moving away and see that cane running down my leg okay now if I do that down the

Line as the cane moves down my leg I can see that the clubs move back the Leading Edge of the club is very much at my spine angle so there’s not been a lot of manipulation of the club there whereas my tendency would be you see how the cane very quickly

Gets away from my body and then I make the compensations I need to make but certainly when I do that drill definitely feels like there’s a little bit more stretch going away and just doesn’t feel like my hands get involved at all but my tendency there I

Can feel the cane wanting to come away from my leg so run down that thigh that feels very different so once I’d rehearsed a few of those I would then set up to the ball and try and get that same feeling in the initial part of the takeway so from

There that feels more like it and again and then set up and make the swing and straight away feels very different see much less shape on the ball now again on trapman there what I love here is it actually gets my low point a bit further ahead of the ball

The path’s not as much from the inside and the face while still being a little bit closed is much more neutral and it’s a very different feel for me and unless I’m very conscious of doing it I don’t do it so for me there get that

Feel feel and see that bit there my natural tendency behind and that club face a little bit more open and I definitely have to take a little bit of speed out to begin with to get that feel so again rehearse the sensation feels good into the Ball still felt the hands a little bit active at the bottom but good low Point ahead path again very slightly from the inside and the club face still a much smaller number and definitely for me the more that club face closes the more I tend to

See my path get exaggerated and I just get more and more shape on the shot so definitely it’s not the be all and endle that the takeaway is perfect cuz like I said there’s no such thing as perfect and we do see lots of very very elite golfers with those different takeaways

Now if you’re doing something 10 hours a day for 20 years probably pretty good at repeating the same thing but for most golfers if we can keep that initial part of the takeaway as simple as possible should give us that opportunity to deliver the club much more

Simply that one again felt very few moving Parts low Point ahead to the club’s traveling down very very neutral with the face and the path and just less and less shape obviously I said this was a great takeaway drill this also helps me a little bit kind of into impact and

Through so we know on the way back we’re looking to get that cane running down my leg but certainly as I come into impact it returns back up and then I can practice on the way through so we see down the leg back up the leg and through we can

See how that club face again in that Leading Edge same as that spine angle whereas for me the temp temptation is to get that club face much more like that so it actually almost helps me fully rehearse the takeaway coming down into impact and that initial part of the

Follow through and it really is helpful for me that if I can control that club face more with my body turn rather than my hands it’s much easier to time that so we’ve got the feeling there got the feeling there can we then hit the shot didn’t feel perfect but felt much

Closer to where I need it to be low Point 2.8 in ahead club path 1.6 de from the inside Club face only 2° closed a much tighter shape of shot much more consistent distance and honestly if you can use that drill and get used to how you get the club moving initially away

Way and potentially on the way through it’s going to really improve your ball striking and massively improve the accuracy with every Club in your bag
