Australia was pummeled with golf ball-sized hail after a massive dust storm tore through the southeast of the country.

In US news and current events today, golf-ball-size hail rained down on Australia. After months of drought and devastating fires Australia finally got some rain, but the stormy weather brought some wild effects of its own after a massive dust cloud swept across parts of the southeast. In a crazy 24 hours of intense weather events in Australia.
In parts of Australia, including Canberra and Melbourne, golf-ball-sized hail rained down, breaking windows, killing birds, and stripping leaves off trees. With the hail came almost hurricane-level winds. Emergency services in the area said they received more than 3x the normal number of emergency calls during and after the storm.
The hail came not long after a large dust storm swept across parts of New South Wales. The storms did bring rain, but in some places it was actually too much. Cities in Queensland, north of New South Wales, experienced flash flooding over the weekend of January 17-19. Approx 20k homes were left without power across Australia though most have had power restored as of Jan 21.
The rain has reportedly provided relief for some wildfires, but more than 80 fires continue to burn. Even if the rain hasn’t solved the country’s ongoing crisis, it has brought at least some small degree of hope. Actor and Australian native Russell Crowe shared before & after photos on Twitter, illustrating how the rain helped restore his property.
