Ref Watch: Lack of focus and judgement by VAR in disallowing Luis Diaz goal says Dermot Gallagher

In today’s edition of Ref Watch, Dermot Gallagher spoke about the disallowed Luis Diaz goal which happened during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had already slammed “the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions,” before referee body PGMOL officially apologised for Luis Diaz’s first-half strike being disallowed for offside.

It was later revealed VAR mistakenly believed that the on-field decision had been to award the goal. This resulted in VAR Darren England, despite realising that Diaz was onside, relaying a message of ‘check complete’ and the goal being ruled out.

  1. non of this is giving LFC the points that they should have and this could cost them the title!

  2. Assistant VAR was asking England if he was happy with his decision, he said yes without realising the goal is not given!
Should have stopped the game ! Decision should be made before the game continues.

  3. Psychologically an overseer may very easily not see an error in communication, due to the huge infrequency when which this error could happen…i have a 4 point plan and the most important part of that is to change the protocol..ie nothing can be done after the game is restarted…change it
    others:

    Independant VAR team
Full VAR replays shown for referees veryfying decisions (not just VAR in some of these situations)
More verbose dialect used for referee/VAR communication

    problem solved YNWA

Football one game ONE name period, and no that's not NFL (enefel) handegg.

  4. Offside infield… Then VAR comes with an intentional judgement to push the win to Tottenham… The red cards said it all…

  5. All of them planned to make the win possible for Tottenham. The RSL league will never do this

  6. The referee is lying… He surely knew it was a goal. His rampant cards doesn't depict his truth now…

  7. It will happen again. They did that intentionally. Investigations must be done. They have been bribed.

  8. We are being fed with cover up answers and explanations to spread ice over the fury. But simple TV footages available at that point in time show that without the VAR lines being drawn, the normal naked eye of any individual should clearly see the onside position. Cannot be a "Human error" when we've got so many referees and officials involved. Then overlooking what are being thrown to us it should be DELIBERATE CHEAT amounting to CRIMINAL FRAUD in my humble view..undoudtedly shared by millions of viewers who watched that particular point of the match LIVE. Police should roll their sleeves up and investigate. The outcome should be shocking !

  9. If Arsenal had loost today, they would have had this same situation. For along time I have seen Referees way more shielded and protected than players. These referees do things and nothing is done to them.

  10. When talking about human error, people forget about the linesman that somehow saw a clear offside. Usually the linesman keeps his flag down unless it’s an offside by a country mile. The whole refereeing group involved in that match deserves to be sacked.

  11. Piss poor communication from eveyone involved in the decision. I dunno why they needed to rush the decision so quickly in a very important goal just take another 10 seconds

  12. Him saying the assistance VAR should have also done something is stupid. Refs are nearly all so arrogant and strong headed most of them don't take advice from their assistance. Quite a lot give instructions before the game for them not to… I've seen refs totally ignore linesmen in professional football.

  13. He is lying when he says there was no laws to allow him to do it one of the first laws of the games is the refs word is final and he can do what he wants

  14. So when they asked him what could be done to stop it why not suggest a rule change, there are already exceptions for stopping play after restart why not add officials cock up as an exception then it never happens again…

  15. Its not human error but game fixing.what do you expect him to say he is one of them it was not a mistake, is any one going to admit that the game was dilibretly fixed ,mafia investigate all involved. Var is not human.

  16. This was a quite useless discussion. The point is that the VAR processes are clearly very poorly designed (I assume this is what Liverpool are referring to when they say 'human error' is not an adequate description of what happened). No doubt the VAR process was designed by the referees themselves – would have been better to engage someone with some knowledge of process design. Also, the audio released in this and other instances is a shambles – 'happy with the decision'? etc. is inappropriate language and insufficiently clear. Much better protocols needed here e.g. 'Negative – VAR disagrees with the on-field decision. Liverpool no. 7 Diaz is onside. Goal for Liverpool. Please confirm.' would do it.

  17. Why can't the ref go to the sideline and double check every contentious decision? The time it takes to do this will be taken in a calmer manner and also makes sure that it is the ref that actually refs the game and not VAR.

  18. Yes we're all human but losing most needed point's because of an single humans error could be acceptable but more than 2 var officials makes it a fixed match, im not english in fact im an african from 🇳🇦 but im part of the best league in the world that should have the best of the best officials, this is unacceptable and the fact that we have debates on this matter makes it more infuriating .

  19. How about reverting to the good old days when there was NO replays,No panels and everyone accepts the ref/line person decision, and GET RID of the GOBBY know alls such as MERSON,because Mike Dean was right,as he knows the rules ,save money, cheaper TV,because v a r and all these bodies cost money, just do away with them all, quite sure Mr Klopp and his team will have got away with many a decision when they knew it was wrong, win some /lose some

  20. Steve talking like an entitled spoilt scouser, it was a human error so just get over it; if we go down the replay route there would be loads of games that Liverpool would need to replay when they won games that they should not have won

  22. Erm i thought the linesman was not suppose to raise his flag for offside when it was clean through the middle unless it was clear and obvious. This was not. And Should have been left to Var to say yes goal or no goal. Simple communication.

  23. Don’t know if anyone else has commented on my point which is . . . .There seems to be a lot of noise from participants in VAR area and the difference between the spoken word of ONSIDE and OFFSIDE is minimal in a noisy confused situation . . . How about GREEN for a goal and RED for no goal.

  24. VAR officials are corrupt, that's the only conclusion I can arrive at.Too many cheap mistakes have been made in such a short period of time,we're just 8 games in.Every weekend we spend time talking about VAR horrendous decisions instead of the beautiful game.Howard Webb thinks he's talking to a bunch of idiots.Saying more or less nonsense. There is match fixing going on, period.

  25. I think all the chairmen of the premier league should get together and say no games will be played until this matter is resolved with a replay
