Cliff Thorburn On Luca Brecel, Money Games & The 1980 Final

Cliff Thorburn, A.K.A The Grinder, is welcomed onto the channel to play Stephen in a frame at The Crucible! Covering subjects such as the Canadian snooker scene, playing for money, winning the World Championship in 1980 and what he makes of Luca Brecel, this episode is not to be missed. Cliff is a really funny guy who tells some hilarious stories, he’s also still got some snooker skills in the locker. We couldn’t ask for a better venue to film this one in too! 1. I remember watching his live 147 on TV way back in 1983. Great play but Cliff Tormenting was so slow and boring the same as Davis Griffiths during that era it made the likes of Flamboyant Alex Higgins Jimmy White Kirk Stevens a joy to watch simply because they were spectacular players. Their Dna is in Ronnie O Sullivan to this present day.

  2. This series is amazing, I never thought I'd see Cliff play at the table again – and the conversations in-between are so much fun to hear! Thank you, Stephen, I hope we can see you and the Grinder get through some more stories in the future! 🙂

  3. Cliff talks about the magic of his discovery of snooker – I'm no proper snooker player but for me and probably loads of others, it was his 147. We had a recording of it on a VHS tape and I played that thing over and over. Our player had a play backwards option so I'd watch it backwards too, with the balls popping out of the pocket to land perfectly on his cue.

Him dropping to his knees at the end is the iconic celebration in all sports for me. The joy, the relief.

  4. Always great to see cliff.. true legend of snooker. Very charismatic man.

  5. Never met cliff but seems like a great man with a gr8 insight to the game, another amazing video stephen 👏 🎉

  6. Love Cliff. A gentleman. Thrilled to watch him in the early 80s. Saw him in an exhibition in Brighton about 8 years ago. Great memories.

  7. Cliff strolls around like a retired boxer. He's quite mild mannered nowadays but in the past he would have really duffed you up.

  8. Hendrys always got to win. It would be nice if he listened more to the answers of his questions.

  9. That was emotional, I was a Jimmy and Alex fan. No denying his talent though and he was a gentleman on and off the table.

Yeah, he had a Charlie habit for a while, but then again it was the done thing back then for a lot of players.

Good to see him looking well, as for Bill he was a rare talent, great cue action and to think he had a tremor in his arm that took copious amounts of alcohol to stop.

  10. I had the privilege of seeing Cliff Thorburn in action at Queen's University, showing off with trick shots! I think, looking back, that was right after he had won the World Championship, so sometime between Sept. 1980 and April 1981! I started watching snooker in the 2nd half of the 1980's, when it was televised on Cable TV in Seattle, and I caught it in Victoria, BC! Those were the days. Nowadays I get to enjoy it on YouTube!
