Does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu work in self-defense or street fight? Today I compete in a Jiujitsu tournament to see what happens if you don’t go to the ground. Because that’s the last place you wanna be in real life.

The fact that a karate nerd says jiu jitsu doesn’t work is crazy, I’d love to see this guy get ragdolled in mma sparring
Now try to do this with a jiu jitsu black belt
So you barely beat a white belt who doesn't know a single takedown and think that means you're the shit? Lmfao
Sportive BJJ has nothing to do with the original BJJ that Helio Gracie has created. In that time there was no point counting and the fight began with standing fighters. Watch Royce gracie fighting in UFC 1, 2 and 3 and you'll see that pure BJJ was enough to submit any other fighting style much before MMA was a thing.
No amount of black belts, ufc titles or martial arts training can handle a gun in a street fight.
I look at MMA and BJJ as a sport and a healthy way to stay fit and nothing else!
Great video btw, subscribed 🙂
I don’t think any martial art works if your test is against a white belt 😅
BJJ practitioner here, loved the video! Now, for the BJJ competition guys: 4:40 ref was totally wrong with those 2 points, right?
i'd say that 100% of fights end on the ground when the other person gets knocked out
This is really why I chose Karate over Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I just found it more efficient personally.
Jesse I really want to implore you to reconsider your thoughts on BJJ. You're basing the whole art style off from just a rookie whom may not have much experience and this may have been his first tournament ever.
In past videos where you go to learn and understand other fighting styles you get with experinced instructors of the said art style, yet here you don't even do that and already come to the conclusion it dosen't work because of one match against a white belt.
I'm not saying "Come down to my home and I'll teach you real jiu jitsu" I'm only a white belt myself and I'm still learning and growing so I'm not the guy to come to for it. But I'd say get with black belt instructors who've been studying this art style for years and knows what they're doing because if you do I promise you they'll change your prespective.
Honestly most fights end in 2 mins never see the ground . Some end up there sure, the ones that drag out, but that’s not most fights.
Jesse, your the nicest karate guy ever man, you should have Bas Rutten on your channel.
the fundamentals of grappling apply to any self defense situation
I don’t get it, you proved it works?
You just proved JJ/grappling works.
You used JJ to control and sub him
BJJ has takedowns, with the right take down you can hurt someone, he was just pulling guard on you.
You do realize jiu jitsu starts standing up right? The objective is to get the opponent to the ground and get on top of them not just lay down fight that black belt again and try it see what happens
Point taken, but I would have loved to see you compete at that tournament with a level closer to your knowledge of martial arts….like black belt. Things would have gone differently I promise.
yeah i do belive for the normal person BJJ isnt the best pick, but when you know how to use it, and use it in a streetfight or bar fight you can win, just like if you know any other martial art
Maybe BJJ doesn't work while standing up but judo does. Try fighting a judo master like shintaro higashi.
I get the point! But I don’t understand why it wouldn’t be good training both type of martial arts. Instead of thinking it’s either good or bad. What if we train for both situations. Down on the floor and stand up?
Grappling martial arts are my favourite ( wrestling, judo), but I don't like BJJ because of the point you proved.
😂😂😂😂
U should do judo to see how it goes
Jiu-jitsu works standing. It's called Judo and it works. Practitioners of all martial arts should expand their concepts and worldview.
Now go ahead and try that with sambo
I was trained in "combat hand to hand" fighting in the USMC, and it looks nothing like any martial art I have seen, that showed me "martial arts" are mostly for exercise or sport. Yeah, if you are strong enough, or your opponent just sucks at self defense you can use a martial art to win, but they are not combat arts.
