In order to hit a good chip or pitch shot … it’s necessary that your club hits back of the ball before scraping the ground. Thus lifting the ball into the air for you.
Where many Golfers struggle is that they seem to be trying to lift the ball in the air by attempting to get their club underneath the ball.

You mentioned using a sand wedge on the pitch, but you never mentioned the club you were using on the chip.
