Hi, my name is Shane Paul Neil from City Coach Multisport, and I’ll be telling you about how to pick your sprinting spikes. Sprinting spikes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, manufacturers, and designs. What you want to be most focused on is actually the sprint plate. While most manufacturers will rate their particular spike for the distance, whether it’s 100 to 200 meters, 200 to 400 meters, or 400 meters and up, what you want to be keenly aware of is the length of the foot plate.

Longer foot plates are designed to be more rigid, and to get more response overall to each step. Shorter foot plates provide more flexibility and a decrease in weight, generally more appropriate for 400 meter and 800 meter runners. Keep in mind that different manufacturers will have different lasts, meaning each shoe will fit a little differently depending on your foot. If you have a wider foot or a narrower foot, you want to find a spike that fits with you overall. And again, as much as possible try not to deviate from the footwear that you decide, and never try something new on competition day. And that’s how to pick a spike for sprinters.
