Hi Liam, it seems to be that the height doesn't matter as any staked tree is a no play zone, so relief needs to be taken, if Pete didnt take relief then he could have incurred a 2 shot penalty, but local rules rule👍
Peter Finch is right. There is nothing in the rules of golf about staked trees and their height and getting or not getting relief. However, the rules do say that a local rule might say for the protection of staked trees you can get relief under rule 16 or 17 so it is purely down to the course to decide.

A staked tree does not automatically grant free relief. You need to consult the card to check on the local rules if there is protections for young trees. Then if designated by stakes then you can take relief. I see there is a local rule in place, so relief is ok here.
Never seen such a cheat, every shot he tries to put the other person off. In a golf competition I would have thought he would get penalised or disqualified

Staked trees aren't mentioned in the Rules of Golf. Always a Local Rule
There is no height restriction on a staked tree but any relief is driven by a local rule, not a Rule of Golf. You should have checked the score card to see what local rule applied
usually staked trees are a free drop….but some clubs have a local rule …no drop….
All staked trees that have tape on you get relief
