How to Use Gravity When Chipping | Paddy’s Golf Tips #41 | Padraig Harrington

In this lesson I share I share how to use gravity to your advantage when chipping. After repeating the basics of chipping discussed in an earlier video, I demonstrate how letting the club head fall under its own weight, whilst utilising a long backswing and a short follow-through, promotes effective chipping.

  1. Thanks for the tip. Some Suggestion for the next Video: Woods from Fairways or course Management. Your work is greatly appreciated ❤

  2. Absolutely fantastic. My chipping has got worse lately and I have just now realised that it was for the reason you said Paddy. I have been shortening the backswing and trying to force speed through the ball causing me to knife chips through the green.

  3. It’s great that a player of Padraigs stature can take the time to share his knowledge like this , love his tips and videos surely more pros should follow his lead 👌

  4. Chipping tips from a proven tour professional, doe's it get any better than this folks? I think not!

  5. The advice to use gravity is golden and something few instructors mention. 👍

Gravity is the most consistent force on the planet, accelerating mass towards the ground at 32ft/sec/sec. and acts not just on the club head but also the arms which have far more mass than the club head. Using the hip and shoulder turn to accelerate the arms and club head and then just letting the uncoiling of the legs and core plus gravity do all the work on the way down produces very consistent distance control.

One of the first golf books I purchased in the 1980s was Tom Watson’s “Getting Up and Down From 40 Yards and In” in which he suggested two drills. In the first you hit every wedge and iron in the bag with 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 just observing and making notes on carry, roll and height. In the second use the data gathered in the first to hit close to flags 10 – 40 yards away with all the clubs. Do those drills with the technique suggested by Padraig and you’ll see more options around greens and shoot lower scores.

  6. Fantastic Padraig. Chipping is the best part of my game always has been. What I have always tried to explain to bad chippers is to accept a bad chip. Everyone does it at some stage, so get on with it and don’t get too worked up. ( this is the confidence you talk about), I play chips with massive wrist hinge to try and check em up quick, doesn’t always work but sure so what, I’m almost guaranteed to be chipping on the next hole, so bad is the rest of my game and I’ll have another go. Amazing how I’m no good with driver off a perfect lie😂

  7. If I win tonight’s Euro Millions I’m paying Paddy for a week’s intensive coaching ! (Wonder how much he’d charge me 😂)

  8. Thanks paddy never forget your always massively appreciated for supporting and taking your valuable time to help us less fortunate to improve our game …god bless 👏

  9. Thanks Paddy! I am the world's worst chipper of the ball. the examples you show of bad chippers are exactly what I do and worse. It has been a long time frustrating problem. One pro had me try cross-handed, left hand low. looks awkward but does help some. I will try the gravity technique. Thanks again!

  10. Sucked at chipping today in a round that wouldve been pretty decent. Needed this video

  11. Thank you very much. Really appreciate the time and effort you put in to help us play this great game.

  12. God love ya' Paddy! Thanks so much for continuing to bring us old duffers these great golf tips!

  13. Excellent Lesson Padraig. I struggle with too much weight or lean on my front foot. Any drills to stop me doing that?

  14. There’s a bit of a mistake here – if the club is in a straight line pointing at your body when it hits the ball, that would be its low point, so the divot will not be after the ball.

  15. I’ve practiced that , with the towel an inch or two in front of the ball ,it looks easy but it isn’t ,it drives me nuts 😢

  16. At last somebody who can walk the walk. No preferred lies behind camera, no second takes, no false laughs. No all talk and no action, etc. Brilliant Paddy
