Controversy erupted at the Masters when first-round co-leader Brooks Koepka was involved in what was described as an “obvious” rule violation. The drama occurred after Koepka’s second hit on par-five 15th hole, a five iron one who found the green and set a bird for American. Cameras caught sidekick Ricky Elliott uttering a word that looked like “five” towards his gaming partner Gary Woodland. A player’s caddy is considered an extension of the player. The penalty for breaking this rule is two hits. The Masters committee spoke to group at the end of round and cleared Koepka and Elliott of any infringement. As a result, committee decided there was no violation of the rules,” organizers said in a statement. Brooks Koepka’s assistant Ricky Elliott appears to be giving advice to his gaming partner Gary Woodland. Former European Ryder Cup player, now commentator Paul McGinley, said Golf Channel Koepka should be punished. “This is very clear,” he said. “Anyone looking at these pictures, it’s pretty obvious what’s going on. “It’s surprising that they denied it because the video evidence was out there,” he said. McGinley added that Elliott’s actions are standard for a caddie. He said, “Look, I know Ricky very well. “It’s common practice on tours. It’s common practice whether you like it or not. “It happens in every professional tournament in the world. Sharing the tournament lead with seven subs, Koepka said it was a teacup storm after the round. “Yes, we looked when we got back,” Koepka said. “[Gary Woodland and his assistant] had no idea what we hit. They didn’t know because – I know that fact because GW asked me what we hit on the way down. “So that’s all I can give you.” Former Australian pro Mark Allen tweeted that a rule violation “had no question”. “I can’t believe it was rejected,” she wrote. “According to the letter of the law, this is a two-shot penalty.”

  1. *This bum told Gary Woodland what club he hit on his 2nd shot into the final par 5. Both his bumness and Gary Woodland should be penalized. Idc about what non golfers think. This is not allowed and shows what lack of respect Brooks Kupcake has for the history and game of golf*

  2. Maybe they allow that cheating on the liv tour. He will now be a cheater in my eyes forever.

  3. The Video is clear – Brooks Caddie was talking directly to Gary's Caddie. Masters and PGA Officials should look at the evidence and make decisions based on extremely clear and compelling evidence Vs. primarily asking players/caddies. Players/Caddies might be tempted to avoid the truth, especially when allowed to play dumb to incomplete questions and not provide full accounts in a process that was also clearly meant for the players themselves to maintain Brooks might have put forward his integrity along with the exceptional ethical canons that The PGA, Player Professionals and incredible events like The Masters developed long before most of us still able to swing a club established for all of us to treasure and enjoy.

  4. I’m entering this conversation late. Did witnesses hear the word “five”? Do we know what they were talking about? A nearby rule’s official said no rule was broken. It sounds to me like a lot of LIV haters are sounding off.
