Is a win as good as a rest? Mayo to find out | Future of provincial championships | RTÉ GAA Podcast

Ciaran Whelan and Mick Foley of the Sunday Times join Mikey Stafford and Rory O’Neill to look back on the Allianz Football League finals and try and see what they mean a week out from Championship.
Mayo are champions, but Galway get a week in Portugal. Dublin are out of the second tier, but what did they learn? The lads try to avoid All-Ireland predictions, but Mick took it further than others.
Mayo have been the form team and deserved champions, but Galway have room for improvement and will rue some missed goal chances on Sunday.
Injuries will play their part in such a truncated season and Derry, Dublin and Galway will hope Conor Glass, Dean Rock and Johnny Heaney respectively can recover quickly.
Whelo wonders if the looming provincial championships will not be an unwelcome effort for some of the top teams, and will some counties be less disheartened by defeat than in previous years.
Dublin must get the ball to Con O’Callaghan quicker, but there are signs Dessie Farrell is building a team capable of another Sam Maguire, while Derry need to figure out how to play their game at Croke Park.
Cavan were impressive against Fermanagh and if Armagh beat Antrim, they will be sternly tested by Mickey Graham’s men.
Sligo beat Wicklow in a cracking Division 4 final played in horrendous conditions, but Mick reckons we podcasters can overthink the Tailteann Cup-Sam Maguire conundrum – Tony McEntee and his players just want to win games.

  1. Such a shame that certain counties can make fun of division that they are in while the Div 4 Final was probably the most enjoyable of them all.

  2. Another sniper – marksman seen on the roof of Croke Park yesterday taking out the Mayo keeper.. embarrassing 😳

  3. First year bounce will see Mayo lift Sam I believe, it’s often that way. V impressed with the attitude and belief displayed in the intensity and tackle, McStay would’ve been pleased with that. Cillian does need to be fit and flying for this to happen of course . Expect Joyce to have a word with Walsh regarding showboating with his left from a 5 metre offset shot. It’s fine at awkward angles from the right doing that, makes no sense otherwise.

McStay seems to understand the psychology of players like OShea who looks energised after the Horan era.

  4. Guy on top right seems to always be quite obviously biased leaning towards dublin and just bitter when mayo do anything remotely good. It makes for very cringe worthy watching almost like Ryan turbidy trying to deal with harrowing stories. It's just wrong he sounds like that narcissistic hipster guy at a party that pushes his views on everyone 😂 – defs time for a host change. Rory O Neill has genuine passion for this and is always quite fair would rate him as the new host. Never gonna compete with OTB at this rate 😅
