Rory McIlroy hit his tee shot right and into trouble off the first tee during the second day of group play at the 2023 Dell Match PlayWorld Golf Championship at the Austin Country Club, he escaped but ended up losing the hole.

This was hole 1 of the Thursday, March 23rd second-round group play match between Rory and Denny McCarthy (48). Rory hit his tee shot 295 yds to the right rough and had 99 yds to the hole – the first hole is tree-lined down the right-hand side of the fairway and Rory missed right into the trees as you see in this video (the video is of Rory’s second shot). The pin was in the front right of the green, yet Rory blasted his second shot 120 yds to the back left of the green, leaving himself about a 70-foot putt, which he did not make. McCarthy had put his second shot in close and made his birdie putt to win the hole.

McCarthy was 3-up at one point in the match, and it wasn’t until the 16th hole that Rory turned the tide to go 1-up. Rory ended up driving the green on the par-4 18th hole and putting in for an eagle to win the match 2-up.

  1. This is so annoying when fans want to be all up the players when their hitting…they should make a rule to move fans back atleast 50 ft back until they completed the shot
