What Happened To Stewart-Haas Racing?

2009-2020 seemed to be the good ole days of Stewart-Haas Racing. Since 2021 the team hasn’t been the same and is irrelevant regarding the championship. Leaving NASCAR fans to ask what happened to SHR?

  1. Downsize to a two-car team. Continue to develop Chase Briscoe and sign a veteran like MTJ or a returning Newman.

  2. Nepotism of keeping Cole Custer as long as they did while allowing guys like Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson, and Tyler Reddick go elsewhere didn't help at all

  3. They have so many things going at the same time. With F1 being a serious struggle, much more so than NASCAR. Now NHRA…they need some serious talent and cash flow in all areas to make all that work.

  4. Motorsport has shown that no team, no matter how big or successful, keeps competing for championships forever. Take Mercedes in F1. Who would have thought, in 2021 where they ran Max Verstappen extremely (some would say artificially) close for the title, that they would drop the ball in 2022 and again in 2023?

Switching back to NASCAR, although it could be too early to say if it follows the same path, but who would have thought that Dale Earnhardt Incorporated (DEI) would enter the downward spiral that ultimately led to the team disappearing in 2009 after what seemed like a dip in form in 2005? It just goes to show that in motorsport, like other aspects of life, nothing lasts forever

  5. When the RCR rumors first popped up I was a little shocked to say the least, as a KB fan I was certain he was going to be in the 41 after Joe Gibbs let him go, however I'm glad Kyle's in the 8 car. RCR seems to be a great fit for him.

  6. Ford saying no to Larson was the beginning of the end for SHR and now Larson has 13 wins and a championship for HMS karma's a bitch ain't it

  7. I think after either this year or next, we'll see a drastic change in the driver lineup at SHR. I see their 2024 or '25 lineup shaping up like this:

    4 – Briscoe
    10 – Herbst
    14 – Zane Smith
    41 – Preece

  8. I'm big on Ryan Preece. I think he will take the team by his hand next season when Harvick retires!!

  9. This may be a stretch but the decline coincides with Gene Haas’ entry into Formula 1, a project which has been relatively successful but very expensive.

  10. And the only reason Kevin Harvick is 4th in the points right now is primarily because of the huge penalties slapped on the Hendrick teams a few weeks ago

  11. the worst part is Harvick admitting he didn't/doesn't put time in the sim. he lost any advantage he could have had by not working to know the new car. ughhhh.

  12. I feel like Tony Stewart is more focused on his NHRA team and the future of the SRX series, so he's definitely not invested in the future of the team

  13. I think it's a combination of poor driver development and declining dedication from both Gene Haas and Tony Stewart. As for Gene Haas, I think his troubles in F1 (Grosjean v Magnussen, Rich Energy, Uralkali) may have had a hand in it.

  14. Keeping aric for even longer didnt help, same with Custer, ford In general dropped the ball with larson and Busch and ford also in general has a week driver development program, clearly 3rd behind Toyota and Chevy, only reason ford is staying relevant is logano and harvick at this point, Blaney is kind of there after that it’s steep drop offs in driver talent, Brisco showed flashes last year but fell off late and the start of 23 is disastrous for him, so idk if it’s so much a Stewart haas issue vs a ford driver line up issue, when they had drivers they got results. I also get the vibes that Tony is kind of checking out and I feel like that’ll fall off more when Kevin hangs it up. Long story short I think it’s more driver line up in the ford camp in general.

  15. This team might not be around much longer, or Haas F1 for that matter. Haas automation (allegedly) got caught violating u.s. sanctions on Russia by continuing to do business with the country. No legal expert but if you look at what happened with oil tycoon Oscar Wyatt and Saddam Hussein and the aftermath of that, Gene Haas could meet the same fate.

  16. You say let’s NOT forget Danica Patrick, I say why don’t we go ahead and forget that ever happened 😂 No doubt she brought fans to the sport but she was nothing more than a publicity stunt. The only thing worse than her driving is her commentating.

  17. The hiring of crap drivers (Custer, Patrick, Briscoe, Preece, Almirola) for starters. Now the owners have other priorities and SHR is not even on the stove, let alone the back burner.

  18. I think SHR needs new numbers: replace the 41 number with the 00, and for the 10 number replace it with the 98

  19. The question now rises who takes that 4 car. It has to be an elite driver.. I wouldn't be shocked if Stewart-Haas goes after Alex Bowman and tries to buy him out of the contract. I say that because Bowman is the #4 driver at HMS. I bet he'd like to be the number one at SHR. If not him then you'd have to question who they can go after..

  20. Talent means a lot in Cup, and SHR hasn't had a lot of it. Obviously Stewart, Harvick and Kurt Busch are champions and legends. Newman and Bowyer are solid drivers. Preece is a very good race car driver, but I don't know if his talent level is good enough to be a consistent Cup winner. Briscoe looks like a decent driver. Beyond that, there isn't much else to work with there. For whatever reason people act like Almirola is a good driver, and just don't get it. 3 wins in over 10 years of Cup racing is not good. I understand that some of that time was at RPM. But, at SHR he has 2 wins, and truthfully I can't even call the Talladega win a real win. He's likeable, but he's booty as a driver.

  21. Tony has been saying for awhile now he wants to get out of the sport without using these exact words. There is a reason he's investing so much into NHRA because he sees his future there. I think Stewart Haas will be sold off in 5 years and Tony will be out of the sport completely besides a few media appearances here and there. We can clearly see his new focus is NHRA and his nascar team is feeling the effects.

  22. I was there with Newman won the brickyard, that was a pretty exciting race at the end. Honestly at this point if I was a NASCAR driver with Front Row Motorsports looks about as appealing as half the Stewart Haas cars do right now . There is something really wrong there that Harvick is the only competitive car. Letting Kurt Busch go was not a good move. I think whoever takes the 4 should be a veteran driver, because they don’t have an elite level veteran presence. I think Aric Almirola is a good driver but he it’s not even close to being elite and he will eventually retire in the next year or two.

  23. The line up is most likely going to be

    Harvick Retires 2023
    Amirolla retires 2024

    Which would mean

    Ryan Preece
    Chase Briscoe
    Cole Custer
    Chris Buscher

Have to fill those empty Cup seats. And if they keep the Xfinity team around. Most likely Hailie Deegan who gets that seat.

because Nascar and Ford want to keep their "most" popular winless driver around for viewership and advertising.

Until everyone realizes its just another Danica Patrick

  24. Under the original points system, Harvick would've been the champion in 2015, 2016, and 2020. SHR absolutely dominated… until the end of 2020.

  25. Harvick is getting old, Kurt Busch went elsewhere, Tony Stewart retired. 3 of the best to ever do it. Outside of those 3 guys, the team has been pretty average with the occasional random win here or there. That’s all that happened.

  26. Well, one of the owners is a chubby crybaby who can dish it but sure as hell can't take it, and he killed a kid on purpose I would like to think he didn't but you never know! And now Chubbs McKenzie is going drag racing good luck let's hope he manages to not kill someone.

  27. Speaking of Clint bowyer, you need to do a bad seasons: Clint Bowyer 2016 video on that one. It was the season when h Scott Motorsports bought out his number 15 team from Michael Waltrip Racing
