DOES COST EQUAL PERFORMANCE + FUJIKURA AXIOM GRAPHITE SHAFTS | NO PUTTS GIVEN 135

Does golf have a “furniture problem?” Tony seems to think so. In this episode, Chris and Tony discuss the cost of new drivers and whether or not it’s too high. Are we getting better performance based on how much we spend?

Plus, Fujikura Axiom graphite iron shafts–a niche product with a high price tag. However, with VeloCore technology incorporated, you may find the ‘sweet spot’ more consistently.

There’s a lot on deck so kick back, watch, listen, or do both! This is No Putts Given.

  1. You have to consider one other aspect, it’s not just the excessive high cost, it’s the fact that the performance benefits do not correlate with the higher price. IF (and a big if) the price went up by 20% but performance also went up by 20% then there is a case to answer that perhaps justifies the price hike. But the reality is a 20% price hike and a .05 to 1% performance increase (for my swing speed and skill set). At some point this market is going to crash.

  2. My buddy owns a 9 hole golf course and we have been friends for over 30 years, 1990 he hired a kid that played the South African golf tour (a stepping stone to the PGA back in the day ) He came home because of Aprthide, and My buddy hired him and he was Sponsored by Ping and I played many rounds with this kid and he left his PING clubs at the country club where he lived and the kid would just take out the old rental crap and would play under par with the stuff, and I would ask him why he never brought his good clubs, and I quote " I am at a level where I should be able to put any club in my hands and play well, Plus I enjoy just being able to get out and play a few holes"
Getting lessons and developing a good repeatable swing is your money best spent. My clubs are over 13 years old and I don't think a NEW set is going to take several strokes off my game ……LOL I have my old set of 1996 Callaway big bertha irons and I can take them out and shoot the same score as I do with my 13+-year-old clubs.
It's the Indian, not the arrows !!!

  3. I let the guys with fat wallets buy the drivers for $600, then I pick them up the following year for $200.

  4. Seems to me that the market should not throw these insane prices on new clubs. Their Pros are GIVEN these products and being paid to use them. Yes, they're sponsored by these companies, but if you or I want to use that particular product wouldn't we be some sort of a representative too.? So, I believe the prices should come down for the regular every day civilian.

  5. All manufacturers have raised the costs of clubs in line with inflation. This price increase situation is not unique to the golf industry. It is happening across all retail markets. Consumers wages have not risen in line with inflation. There will be a decline in driver sales this year. 100%. Economics will dictate the situation. If companies believe that consumers will take the hit on price increases, they are delusional. This will be the worst year on record for new driver sales. The golf industry will encounter a seismic sales shock. It's inevitable.

  6. Drivers are over-priced. For the shaft and head combo I was fit into, it’s almost $1400 (CDN) or just over $1k USD. That’s idiotic.

  7. You guys just missed the point here. There is a breaking point to how much people will pay for a driver. The latest price gouges are it! People will renew their clubs regularly if the price is reasonable but will keep the old ones longer or look at older models.

  8. Everything in golf costs too much right now. The economy sucks, and people don't have the expendable cash right now.

  9. I think the OEMs have shifted their pricing because they see more of us skipping iterations, buying used, seeking direct- to-consumer alternatives… we tend to accept higher prices on luxury items (TVs, computers, BMWs, etc) knowing they will last a while..

  10. Hard Pass…. The return on investment doesn't make sense to me but I'm sure they will sell some shafts. People apparently buy Auto Flex shafts and Gold Inlay JDM Clubs.

  11. If people stop buying the price will go down, no matter the product.

  12. Since I'm happy with my current clubs (purchased last year), I have no interest in anymore this season. I wouldn't necessarily balk at the current driver prices, but I do think testing last years model at a discounted price makes sense. I doubt there is much performance difference.

  13. I get the tv analogy but imagine the new tv came with an increased hope of your favorite sports team winning…

  14. I would like to see the players at the Memorial play the clubs of the era of the honored player for a televised warm up round. Old Hickories or Persimmon Woods with the old irons, etc. I also think an entire tournament like that would be cool to watch.

  15. it now common knowledge that if you have a driver from the last 5 years and you hit in generally out of the center, then this years $600 has little to offer you.

  16. Just great for those that can afford the high end specs, but we don't want to hear them whining when the resale value isn't what they expect in comparison to a cheaper shaft!!

  17. I'm going to test the Axioms, but don't see them quite working for me until they increase their offerings. The 105 definitely won't work and the 125s will be close but probably a bit much for my swing. Hope they can come up with a stiff in the 120-125 gram range for the future.

  18. I like the buy 1-2 years old but in new shape strategy. The tech just doesn't change much. A good fit is more important. You can find great clubs for a decent price.

  19. Yes $600 is way too much! $400 is more reasonable. I won't be buying a new driver anytime soon.

  20. Thinking of changing from my Honma 757 driver to may be a Ping G430 or more likely a G425 as they are cheaper
