The Monty Show 900! Is The BIG 12 Better Off Than The PAC 12?

Monty & Jake are talking BIG 12 Vs PAC 12! The PAC 12 is near death, but how healthy is the BIG 12? A new TV that does not significantly increase the yearly payout does not significantly help the longterm viability of the BIG 12, or does it? Is College Sports turning in to the BIG 10 Vs the SEC? Can the BIG 12, ACC, or PAC 12 somehow find a way to turn the tables on the BIG 10 and SEC?

Georgia Star Jalen Carter has a warrant out for his arrest after he was implicated in a street racing crash that led to the death of a teammate and a Georgia Football staff member. Carter, who is though to be the first non-QB taken in the upcoming NFL Draft, now appears to be in significant doubt as he is facing charges in Georgia. Will NFL teams draft Carter? Should Carter be allowed to take part in the NFL Draft?

  1. The Big 12 is safer because the Big 12 contains no targeted schools. Neither the B1G nor the SEC will call any of them. That will breed stability.

  2. Gosh, I want to like you, Monty, but you're kind of an ass. You're like the kid in the school yard that trash talks a 2nd place team as 1st place loser while your horse came in dead last. A lot of water went under bridge so expect there to be some in-your-face. Remember when the PAC wouldn't give the Big 12 a life line? Well karma gotcha, didn't it? Your jewelry box got raided of it's most valuable jewels just like ours did with Texas and OU. It is obvious if you're not SEC or B1G, you need to keep your head on a swivel. But I don't see those two conferences as the end all be all. Mega conferences can't support their weight. Plus, you have to see what Disney plans to do about ESPN. The fact that there are news reports saying Disney isn't selling ESPN should make investors uncomfortable. I mean why would you even have to say that? Juxtapose that with ESPN being told to stop using house money for more realignment. Hmmm.Well, you piss me off but I do really appreciate your take. I'll keep coming back to your channel.

  3. You keep asking why Big 12 people think losing Texas is a good thing – please let me explain. Texas was responsible for the Southwest Conference breaking up, also responsible for Nebraska and Colorado leaving the Big 12, also responsible for A&M and Missouri leaving. They are so big and they throw their weight around. The Big 12 got the deal it got without them and while obviously it is not as good as the Big10 or SEC, it is so much better than the PAC or ACC. But more important the New Big 12 does not have any higher value teams or lower value teams. That in and of itself makes the conference more stable.

  4. 250 million divided by 10 may be 25 mil…but if there are 12 teams that becomes 20,0833,333…real fast…that's less than 21…do some more math and you will see that is less per football game than BYU was getting from ESPN in independence…pick and chose your stats baby.

  5. Find it interesting he took a shot at Osu not going anywhere. But during the big 12 era, they are the second most successful athletic program behind tex.

  6. Recent viewer, love the show, but you started off this show with what if BigTen invites Baylor or TCU? Not going to happen. Ludicrous scenario to throw out there to start the show. Looking at 10 years down the road where there is the big 2 (SEC,BigTen) and a 3rd conference below them and everyone else is the other category, you are right, the Big12 does not have that 3rd conference locked up. Your suggestion that devolved Pac and devolved ACC combining to become the 3rd conference surpassing Big12, that could definitely happen. That is the only scenario I see where the Big12 gets knocked out of the 3rd place spot. I don't see any future Pac conference or future ACC conference knocking them out of 3rd place, that could only happen if BigTen and SEC never expand again and Pac and ACC retain all current members.

  7. Patrick Mahomes is a BIG XII Quarterback "Thriving" in the NFL. Name a Big 10 or SEC QB better in the last 5 years.

  8. Every conference not named the Big 10 or SEC is "vulnerable," but the argument that PAC 12 football is somehow better than BIG XII football is a false narrative. You can continue to argue whether a school from the BIG XII, PAC 12, ACC would go to the Big 10 or SEC if offered the chance, but what cannot be argued is which "currently" is in a better financial position, BIG XII no question. Which conference is more competitive in football, BIG XII, no question. Which conference has the better basketball, BIG XII without question. Which conference has the most competitive baseball, BIG XII, consistently. So quit equivocating or changing the narrative over what the "argument" is about, and deflecting and dodging. I understand you're in Utah, and largely PAC 12 fans, but be honest and realistic.

  9. What a cheap shot you made at Oklahoma State and the entire Big 12. But why should I be surprised? Get ready for next year, because you will lose a significant portion of your viewers. Big 12 fans are already complaining about your change of face. BYU unfortunately for you, will find a less combative and polarizing media pod than you.

  10. Your bipolarism & schizophrenia must really be acting up again on this topic…. can't wait to hear this one.

  11. Just off the top of my head:

    Patrick Mahomes – Texas Tech – Big12

    Jalen Hurts – OU – BIg12

Both of them just played in the Superbowl. (But I guess you don't think they're thriving ???)

    Baker Mayfield – Texas Tech/OU – Big 12

    … okay, so I got some G-help:

"How many NFL quarterbacks are from the Big 12?"

"In fact, five of the 14 quarterbacks who started a playoff game this year came from the league when you include Skyler Thompson (Kansas State) and Geno Smith (West Virginia). Overall, eight of the 32 final starting quarterbacks in the NFL this year hail from current Big 12 teams. That's 25% of the entire NFL.Jan 29, 2023"
    _______
Well, so much for that argument, Monty…

  12. As a lawyer and a former accountant, I couldn't follow your stupid graphic. It did not make sense. And you seemed to reflect the old Big12 contract not the new Big12 contract. The graphic was bogus.

  13. The SEC may be able to get Ohio State to join the SEC if the SEC gets a new contract when Ohio State, Notre Dame, FSU and Clemson, UT and OU , all join the SEC at the same time.

Conversely, Big10 might could talk Texas A&M into leaving the SEC and joining the Big10 (because they didn't get the memo that Ohio State and ND are joining the SEC, and they're Aggies, Aggies goina Aggie).

Neither the SEC or the Big10 have exit fees that are material or substantial.

    So much for that argument.

  14. It was nice to see you eat SOME amount of crow about Big12… even though you tried to spit it out or threw it back up. Out at 21:46

  15. We know the SEC and BIG are the haves. But for all the cash these programs are getting, how many are worth a darn? I argue they grabbed new programs because of the pathetic depth within. They are the most boring in football and basketball. Now, maybe they will be watchable.

  16. The BIG XII is NOT in any danger if the dead man walking (PAC) merges with a terminally ill Conference (ACC due to its terrible TV deal/GOR). The BIG XII is safer because we don’t have members openly conspiring to bolt the conference. We are safer because of our geography (location in the middle of the country). We are safer because none of our 12 teams match the criteria the BIG and SEC have for future members. We are safer because we have fantastic leadership. And we are safer because these ALLEGEDLY smarter coastal conferences continually make profoundly dumb decisions. Not sure where the hosts increasing nastiness towards the BIG XII is coming from. Probably just the ‘PAC mentality’ finally seeping through.

  17. Final # for Big XII is not 31.7. Tier 3 rights puts Big XII teams up near $50 million….so it's NOT a $70 million raise.

  18. The issue is economic for all of the conferences. This is not a matter of the strategies of the conferences or the schools. It is a matter of international and national economics and the direction the macroeconomics (global) and its effect on microeconomics (your town). Frankly, if you look at the consumer price index (CPI), prices of food, fuel, healthcare, etc., are increasing at a record pace. Go look at the store shelf and ask yourself why so many shelves are empty? I am concerned about all of college athletics and all conferences. What do you suppose would happen if all the media companies go into bankruptcy?

  19. There is no new B12 contract. There are the reports, basically rumors, of one. Until those schools actually sign that GoR, you’re just passing gas.

Meanwhile, let’s game something out, as I’m listening to a podcast about the ACC and the Pac. Let’s say Florida State wants a 75% share in order to get in. Let’s say UW and UO want half. What pressure does that put on the Mississippi schools, or Arkansas, or Missouri, or Vanderbilt? Who’s to say the schools that already push around these guys (Bama, Florida, Georgia) don’t start demanding unequal revenue shares? Same for Rutgers, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, etc. with the B1G… them accepting schools who are willing to accept lesser shares will, come the next contract, threaten downward pressure on THEIR shares.

Until there’s another twist (let’s see how these contracts operate, how streaming goes, and what innovations come next), AND ESPECIALLY until we know that the courts decide that athletes are employees of the schools (the NCAA has done everything to ensure losing that case), it may be time to put the brakes on these discussions.
