    What an exciting game!

    I would like to contribute to the discussions by sharing some thoughts and observations on 3 topics: why FZD lost and ML won, the amazing changes in game set up of ML and finally some thoughts about "who is better".

    Why FZD lost and ML won?

    Quiet simple: ML played his 90%+, owns the table, dictates the placement and therefore was always in expected position, FZD was not able and/ or willing to change his game and take more risk (spin, placement or pace of the game)!

    You can see this by analyzing the serve game of ML and the following 3rd ball frame by frame and carefully watch how and where he places his serve, analyzes the upcoming shot of FZD, positions himself properly for the 3rd ball and attacking FZD "off position". This is quiet amazing how much happens in a short period of time. If you would like to know more about the theoretical background of what is going on you should visit the channel of New Level TT.

    When this is 50% of his win, alongside with the change in game setup, the other 50% where "contributed" by FZD by playing consistently his game and therefore playing directly into the positions ML wanted him to play to. He is not taking any risk and applies no change. To me this is about FZD playing mentallity and philosophy, more about that in the section about "who is better". To say it clear: if you experience your opponent playing his 90%+ with your shots and placements, you must change and take more risk to be able to win!

    Amazing general game setup change of ML!

    ML game change reminds me of the game setup change Timo Boll did many years ago, presumeable for the same reason: age and the need to still have enough power to play big tournaments. Timo changed his game playing much more BH, avoiding powerfull pivots and by sometimes staying closer to the table and play with the speed of the opponent. Obviously for Timo this time is "over" but for ML this time is beginning. The game change led Timo to become one of or the (?) oldest number one of all time and I guess we could see this from ML too, if the chinese team let's him play the tournaments…

    Basically ML changes his BH, if you are interested in more details visit the channel of Ti Long and search for the video where he explains the BH changes ML did at the Chinese Nationals in 2021. Just one observation: with his old BH style he lost nearly every BH-2-BH rally against FZD, it was to slow and to big in movement, now ML is winning many of the BH-2-BH rallies against FZD. Furthermore ML is staying closer to the table, he introduced quick and compact FH counter attacks, playing with the speed of the opponent and is much less pivoting his BH side.

    "Who is better" – FZD or ML?

    Oh boy, I do not want to take a dedicated stand in this emotional discussions, rather I would like to give some thoughts.

    The philosophy of FZD is 100% pure chinese TT philosophy: it is all about consistency in and of your shots, play the 90%+ shot instead of the 80% shot, which he is able to play, no doubt. Furthermore, what makes FZD strong, is the positioning game (see NewLevel TT channel) along with his powerfull and incredible athletics.

    If you think of it in a different way: he is the poker player who is only playing mathematically his hands by analyzing statistics. Or, to be more european football style: he is like Pep Guardiola playing tactics with his team (of super individual players). In both examples you win long term, the poker player will make his money, long term and the teams of Pep Guardiola will win at least one national league title after another. Thus, this style will make FZD for sure number 1 a long time, he wins 90%+ of this games.

    The same applies to ML but without the athletics, obviously. But he found a way to compensate this and together with his incredible understanding of the game and his touch he could win one or two big titles, but it will be hard for him to become number one, playing many tournaments.

    Coming back to Pep Guardiola: FZD may be number 1 for a long time but he may loose some of the big tournaments like Olympic or World Championship against ML, if ML has enough power to get to the finals, like Pep loosing many time in Champions League!

    Ma Long was outstanding with a very strong backhand indeed. But we must also acknowledge, that Fan was not on the top of his game. He was very passive, this match was not very important for him. I would argue that if ML can keep delivering these "backhands down the line" and cause trouble for Fan, that chances are that Ma Long will become as good as Fan again. Not sure how this would help against his nemesis, the leftie Wang Chuqin.

    For any sports, I have only seen two greatest players are like Bruce Lee’s quote “being water”: one is MJ, the other one is Ma Long. Both of them are able to adjust their tactics in the battle field to overcome challenges in the matter of seconds. That is called the sports genius, my friend. Of course, Bruce Lee was the one did that first. Unfortunately, I am not old enough to see Bruce Lee in the battle field lived. I have not seen any other athletes could do that including Roger Federer. Thus, I will not be surprised if Ma Long would win another gold in the Olympic game next year.

    Наконец то МА Лонг услышал мои мысли и перестал с ним в бабскую перетычку играть слева налево, в которой Ма Лонг, всегда проиграет и всегда проигрывал ему в такой игре, но всегда выигрывал Фана в разнообразной игре, в смене ритма и в разном направлении атаки, в женской перетычке по диагонали у МА Лонга не было бы ни единого шанса. Несколько раз он ввязался в такую перетычку и проиграл очки, но вовремя одумался, молодец. Но и с Фаном сегодня было что то не то, сам на себя был не похож!!!
