Originally, before tees were invented, they brought a bag of wet sand with them and made a small mound to tee off. Similar concept in theory.

I can't get my head around hitting an 8/ 9 iron off a tee so I have always done this!!
I only tee it up if I’m hitting a 7iron or lower and even then the tee is only 1cm above the ground. No tee for 8iron-56°
