I’ve done that in my Ladies League and had to count the stroke under rule 9.1b.
This was never a "Penalty Situation".
The Question was whether or not to nullify the "Short Putt".
He still might have been able to Finish with Par from where the "Short Putt" ended up.
He didn't make Birdie with the "Do Over".
I have yet to find out how much of a Difference the 1 Stroke Difference between his Par and the possible Bogey meant to the Finish.
If it was a practice stroke with no intention of hitting the ball, would the same penalty apply? It seems they ruled he never intended to hit the ball and the stroke hitting the ball is unintentional.
To me it’s clear someone distracted him mid-stroke (even his opponents seem to acknowledge this), the video shows he was pulling up his effort or pulling back to miss the ball as he was (as he says) intentionally trying not hit it, but he did accidentally hit the ball (as evidenced by the awkward hit trying to not hit it). So please explain in more detail how is this not within the exception 3 under 9.4b? Then the ball goes back to the original spot under 13.1d. Your body always takes a fraction of a second to react to something, then a fraction of a second to execute your brain’s new intentions. Thanks, because I know I will witness this again someday in one of my rounds…
Pieters knows the rules and chanced his arm as most pro,s seem to. Seen it a hundred times people making a stroke when someone talks nearby or a bird screeched at the wrong time etc usually you just curse your luck and get on with it no Mulligan allowed.
