Former England goalkeeper Ben Foster takes Matt Stephens on a Cafe Ride down his favourite Warwickshire lanes, where the pair can’t help getting competitive by sprinting for town sign glory.
There are plenty of similarities between these two top athletes, despite their different sporting backgrounds and footballing abilities. Chatting at length about Ben’s impressive footballing career, we learn how it felt to make your England debut, play under Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and why footballers take dessert to their hotel room.
And the competition continues at Ben’s first football club, where he and Matt partake in a one-on-one penalty shoot-out to determine the champion of the day.

ok so riding two abreast is ok…but completely unaware they are taking the whole left hand lane, with no regard whatsoever for ease and clearance of car overtaking. Entirely unaware of other users. They are taking all 3.65 metres…if car needs minimum 1.5 metres clearance at law to overtake and average car width is 1.8 metres it makes it much too tight to overtake. I ride TCR Ultegra. This self focus is why car users think cyclists are awful and need to pass a test
Not familiar with Ben, being an american, but I absolutely loved watching him hang out with Matt. It made me want to go ride and take a break to kick the ball around. He seemed to match Matt’s energy really well, by being introspective and present, while also not taking himself too seriously. It’s so refreshing to see a superstar with the personality of a decent human.
