Did the LCQ Advance the Correct Athletes? | The Bottom Line

The leaderboard is official and we have the full slate of athletes heading to Madison for the CrossFit Games. But with the second year of the same season format — is the Last Chance Qualifier a good test to advance the final 4 athletes to the Games?

Morning Chalk Up’s Lauren Kalil sits down with Brian Friend and Dex Hopkins to discuss the men’s and women’s fields and whether the LCQ found the last fittest of the 40.

  1. First, I appreciate that Brian takes the time to learn and accurately pronounce the athletes' names before he appears on any show. I think others should follow suit. Next, while Katrin was close to qualifying and her window is still open, I think Sara's time has passed with these younger, hungrier athletes who aren't going to relinquish their top-15 spots. That doesn't mean that Sara can't make the Games, but I don't expect her to get to the top 10. There are too many quality (stronger, faster) female athletes. Hopefully, she will take a few months to regroup, then start back in late fall to get physically and mentally ready for the 2023 Games.

  2. I

To me, I think Corporate CF should have distributed the top 25 across 5 different semifinal locations. That was a big snafu was, in my mind.

  3. Four events were not enough and six would be better. Time and energy shouldn’t be an issue and seeing who is able to recover with six events in three days would be more indicative of the Games. The four tests were great, but needed two more to give the best indication.

  4. The answer is “ yes”. We will find out ultimately at the CrossFit Games. Let’s see how this bunch places overall in a more broad test.

  5. Is it really hard for the host of this show to put in the effort to learn someone's name ahead of time out of respect?

  6. the qualifying spots seems to be an issue, e.g. Aussies. Here is a solution. 8 semis with 5 qualifying spots (or 10 semis with 4 spots). The top 40 athletes are randomly drawn to the semifinals, i.e. the first 8 are in the 1st pot, 9-16 in the 2nd, and so forth. If one the athletes opt out, the 41st athlete drops in. The other 8*30-40=200 spots are filled with local athletes, i.e. countries are assigned to semis.

  7. Sara really isn't that far off that horrific injury to her knee. The fact that she did this well in such a short space of time is amazing to me. Historically she normally jumps around a lot so if she stays at TTT for another season I think we'll see a very strong Sara coming for 2023.

Kaitrin I think will be back too after more time under her new coach.

Are they passed winning the games? Maybe, but they can crack top 10 again in my opinion.
