Qatar 2022 will be the first FIFA men’s World Cup to use semi-automated offside technology in an effort to improve the speed and accuracy of decisions.

The technology – successfully tested at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup and at last year’s FIFA Club World Cup – will see video match officials receive offside alerts, with decisions validated manually before being communicated to the on-field referee.

Communication with fans inside stadiums will also be improved with a 3D animation displayed on big screens, and to television viewers at home, showing how the offside decision was reached.

  1. Yes AI and small details trigger us. However, I RATHER AGREE WITH MACHINE DECISION THAN SOME SUS REFEREE DECISION CUZ MACHINE DOES NOT FLAVOR ANY SIDE

  2. Is all these bs really necessary?.,we might as well put ai robots on the pitch. They're bungin somebody somewhere that I'm absolutely sure of.

  3. I still think that they should go back to there needing to be clear daylight between the attacker and last defender for it to be considered offside. Benefit of the doubt was always given to the attacking player but it seems to have switched to the defending player with how the rule currently stands. These marginal decisions where a player is offside by a pube are absolutely maddening and just suck all the fun out of things. We’ll see how this technology is implemented and how it works in practice, but for now, I remain sceptical.

  4. Why can't the offside rule just be if the whole of players body is beyond the last defenders as opposed to a body part, would make the game much better

  5. VAR has been a catastrophe…but hopefully this will change it.

  6. Just change the offside rule if you’re gonna make it so accurate, really hate goals ruled out for 1/2 an inch of someone’s shoulder being offside

  7. I was born in the wrong decade. God I hate so this nonsense. There is no limits and we’ll end mankind

  8. Seems like just yesterday when 'Hawk Eye' was introduced to bring about Goal Line Technology.. Eventually we won't have a need for referees

  9. Ever get the feeling Football is taking it self too seriously. It's supposed to be a game. What a turn off.

  10. There, be ready for hacking! Suparstrikas cartoon magazine from South Africa, long predicted this way back in 2008.

  11. I can see privacy infringement here for players. Imagine getting player playtime data points for a whole season. You can accurately predict player position if you have access to this data. You can to some extent be able to simulate matches

  12. since the ball has to send data too, how is the system going to determine which ball is being used in the pitch remember there will be many balls outside the pitch on ball boys

  13. Convenient how they omitted the large briefcase of US Dollars in the FIFA VAR Room passed on by a Russian or Qatari bookmaker or politician.

  14. All this technology is fine as long as you dont get anything magnetic near it or any little envelopes made with brown paper !

  15. Technology is really amazing. The engineers are just following the rules of the game. So if someone doesn’t like this, then they need to dislike the rules we have for offsides, not the tech. I personally love the Italian U18 trial this season where: “It is onside if the attacking player is ahead of the defender, but still with one part of the body that can score inline with the defender”

  16. What makes this more legit is the final reviews shown to the audience. That way there’s no doubt. Transparency is key

  17. Technology is taking the true essence of the sport. Trying too hard to make it a perfect sport without errors, errors makes us human.
